Full Version: Chrysler Unveils 14th Custom PT Cruiser Model

Some cars die hard. Take the Chrysler PT Cruiser for example. The original car was released in 2000 with much fanfare, due mostly to it's retro design lines. However, with the anemic powerplant and saturation of the market during the early years, the PT Cruiser has become outdated. That won't stop Chrysler from releasing the PT Dream Cruiser Series 5. The latest trim model, the 14th custom from the factory, sports a crosshatch grille, 17" wheels, a white body with black roof and choice of the standard I4 or the turbocharged unit. There is a roughly $2000 premium for the car when production starts in October. The future of the PT after that is tight lipped.

There's one reason and only one reason this car is still around: CAFE

However, with the anemic powerplant

I got a PT Cruiser once as a rental. I actually thought it was a nice little car. It must have had the base powerplant, but didn't seem particuarly underpowered.

The turbocharged GT debuted for 2003 as an answer to critics who complained the base engine was not powerful enough.

QUOTE ('Road & Track')
The PT Cruiser's greatest weakness is found under the hood -- anemic horsepower. An extra 30 horsepower (for a grand total of 180) would go a long way toward making an incredibly fun driving experience more enjoyable.

Primus I can't wait until they kill that car. I hate seeing them on the roads, the little turds, they're so ugly it hurts my feelings. puketf.gif

EDIT- same for Chevy's HHR, the coolest thing about which is that it shares my screen name's initials. It was a day late and a dollar short when GM squeezed it out in response to the PT Cruiser (never mind their telling you that's not what it was about- look at it). And don't get me started on Chevy's ill-fated waste of space, the SSR trucklet.

I like the HHR. Everything I've heard about it is pretty good. Shrug.gif

The HHR always struck me as a "me-too" vehicle. The SSR goes along with the Pontiac GTO as being good ideas costing WAY too much money. I mean, $40k for the GTO? I don't think Aussies pay that much for the Holden it was based off of!

Back on topic, Chrysler needs a fresh and desireable small car lineup if they hope to remain viable. The PT, which is ancient by most standards, can't carry them.
