I agree with everything here.

With TDK come and gone Warner/DC now has to focus on salvaging the Superman franchise.

Normally I think reboots are idiotic, (No superhero movie IMO worthy of a sequel in the past eight years has been so bad it needed to be rebooted from scratch) Would have prefered that not to have happened with the Hulk/Punisher but Superman Returns is the odd exception. I had the highest hopes in the direction Singer took for the franchise but ultimately hated it because this was not what Superman was meant to be. The idea Superman would leave behind a kid with Lois Lane is beyond some of the worst character fanfiction ever.

I personally don't need another Smallville styled orgin story but at this point when things have gotten as f*ckjed up as they have what choice to the creators have.

Rather than focussing on a sequel for the coming year the studio should seriously consider starting from scratch as if Superman Returns never happened.

My hope is that any reboot of the Superman franchise (or whatever Warner and DC have up their sleeves) doesn't happen until Nolan's Batman series has finished its run. That way they avoid the temptation to force these increasingly dissimilar characters (film-wise) together in order to ride Marvel's super-crossover-extravaganza they're cooking up with their movies.

As bad as Superman Returns was, I'm not sure I'm up for a reboot, for a couple of reasons.
First of all, if you're going to retell the Superman story from scratch, you kind of have to do a Smallville style origin story. And I agree, that would be....underwhelming (there's already an angsty teen superhero, his name is Spider-Man. Lets not angstify a hero who doesn't need to be).
Secondly, as bad as Superman Returns was, I enjoyed watching Roth as The Man O' Steel and Spacey as Luther. Chances are they would be replaced with a reboot if for no other reason then giving everything a "new" look. That would blow because, as I said, I thought Roth and Spacey were fantastic as their characters despite the poor script.

I think the big challenge with a character like Superman is that he has an Iconic status.
he represents a certain mindset and worldview.

The problem is... I'm not sure that Worldview is completely relevant anymore. So by definition Superman has to either change into something modern (ie NOT superman) or the filmmakers have to convince an audience that he still matters and why.

And the details that need to change are deeper and more involved than his spandex costume or cape or anything like that.

I actually think because of his "iconic" status, you don't need to do an origin story - you could just jump into the thick of things.

I think Returns did try and go this route, but the execution was far from elegant. Perhaps the biggest failing being making Returns a sequel to Superman II, which was a weird thing to do and likely helped dig the pits into which the plot of Returns fell.
