Full Version: Displaying The Flyers

Here's my situation.

I want to display some of my Seekers and Jets in flight. Some fishing line I find is best for dangling the jets.

Here's the problem though.

In my display room, I have a very unsturdy ceiling, so tacking into it is out. Either way, I have track shelving, and all my Seekers on one shelf, with another shelf above it, but I can't tack into that either.

So what I want to know is if anyonce can recommend a good solid material that isn't impossible to find that I can put under that top shelf and just hook onto.

I tried a double couragated cardboard, but the track brackets dug into it and made the top shelf to unstrurdy for my likings. I also tried a heavy wire screen, but the saging issues where unaceptable.

Any sugestions are welcome, but remember, I gotta keep this both solid and simple.

Thanks, Liege

So nothing huh. I managed to ric some extra brackets from a set of blinds to hang a few, but it's not enough. Surely someone has some creavile solutions...

Well depending on the thickness of your shelf you could try and screw some eye hooks into it. Also what is you ceiling made of? If it is a hanging ceiling then you can simply tie the fishing line around the corners of one of the hanging tiles. If it is drywall ceiling then you can just screw eye hooks into it, or if it is a really weak drywall ceiling you might want to consider investing in a stud finder to find the rafters, and putting some new nails into it to support it better to keep it from falling down on your head if nothing else. Of course if you don't want to bother trying to tighten the ceiling you could get some really long eye hooks an put them right into the rafters (infact even if you do tighten the ceiling this might be best to keep it tight).

eyehooks use to be my best friend till I realized in drywall you can do even more by poking a hole with a thin nail then feeding in an unbent heavy paperclip. Paperclips also work wonders with drop ceilings too.
In my parents house, I didn't care about holes in the walls. and since I knew how to hang sheetrock, them walls got messed up!!! I'd just buck em with a BB gun, and who needed a dart board!?!
Now I have a security deposit to keep in mind, so keeping holes to a minimum is important.

Now I know I can't screw into the shelves cause they're real solid, and my drill sucks. I also move them around often, so one shelf that may be "the sky" today, can wind up "subterainian" tomorrow(track shelving, and milk crates a collector's best friend). As for the cieling. I did try ancoring into the studs already. I was gonna set up a wire grid like in my second apartment(it was pretty cool), but this here is something old school, and so far I've only found one solid point!?!

I've done alot of home renovations in my time, and I've seen this type of ceiling before, but I think trim molding, and the sheetrock walls are the only things holding it up. Here are some pics of the ceiling, and one of my hanging solutions. If I can find more of these brackets, than I can mount those, and run a wire grid on all my shelves and just hang figures at random

You're right nothing holding that ceiling up at all. My great Uncle had that crap in his basement before we ripped the whole thing apart. To be honest I'm not even sure how that stuff stays up I think there were some points were wire hung down from the floor and held it from there but I know there's no way of knowing with out removing at least one tile to find out where these points are. As for your shelves here's what you need to do. Go to home Depot, and buy yourself a real drill. I suggest the Ryobi 18 volt drill. I have one and it is my best friend when it comes to kitbashing. Right up there with my Dremel. A Ryobi 18 volt will go right through that shelf. As for having trouble with one shelf being the skyh one time you set up and another time it's the sub terrain. Just use the same one for the sky each time. Paint the bottom of it blue, and it'll always be the sky and easy to tell which one it is.

I just had another idea that bar on the bottom of Voltron's shelf tie some thread there and screw an eye hook in the wall, then tie the threads you want to hang your fliers from where you want them. Of course you'd have to watch your head.

The shelves on that shelf unit are very narrow, so I use it for smaller figures like the Titaniums. As far as a designated shelf goes, the reason why that wont work is I use several different size boards, they range from 18in to 4ft. When I get that wild hair to move something, I gotta pluck it out.

Believe me, I thought all that through before I started asking for advice.

Ah ok see I tend to just set my figs up and leave them as they are until I fill the shelf to the point that they need to be reconfigured, or something really cool comes along like Mandingo Rex's Ark panels, and cut out, and fold to build Teletran-1. I'm just waiting for the last piece of the Nemesis to be designed so I can build Megatron's computer, and then tile my display shelf with the Nemesis panels.

Here is my Ark shelf you'll notice CL Hotrod, and Magnus aren't in the pic but that's because they weren't on the Ark. All of my S3 Classics are on their own shelf.

Pictures like that are why I can't wait to get a house so I can expand past the shelf, to tables!!!

But yeah, at a whim I'll rip everything down and start over. It's fun, but a pain, cause I wanna start taking pics for the collectors corner here. Everytime I start though, something changes and I'm right back to going "Well, when I finish, I should show that display" but I never finish, I always start something new half way through.

But yeah, one thing I'm looking for in whatever house I get is a insulated dry LARGE attic just to realy spread out in. The toy rooms are nice, but I think I need a full floor now.

I can't wait to get the Nemesis panels put together for my Decepticon base.

As for starting new projects half way through I know the feeling I have about 15-20 half finished projects.
Liege Evilmus
I hear that, it's fun though, and isn't that the point optimuslaugh2.gif

If intrested, here's some slides, this first one is something recent, still tweeking it, the rest are a bit older, but will still give you an idea of my main toy room. I have another, but it's more for storage, so I rarely shoot in it, but I have a pretty awesome Castle GreySkull set up in there that I've been meaning to feature.

Enjoy, and feel free to coment on anything you see.

boxed figures in no particular order, all of these are still MIB/MSIB, nothing was repacked just to make this slide

Just having some fun with an upgrade, what kills me is that my Skywarp set arrived right after I wrapped this up.
