Robert Downey Jr. Checks His Ego for Iron Man 2

Los Angeles (E! Online) - Before Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. was a punch line for any celebrity rehab story. Now he's considered the mastermind of the greatest comic-book movie ever. Well, for a couple months until The Dark Knight opened.


Going into Iron Man 2, Downey is playing the humble card. "I also have to let go, because there's an aspect, particularly after the success of things, I noticed my narcissism got dialed up," said Downey while promoting his latest film, Tropic Thunder.

"Suddenly, for a minute, I felt like everyone needed to take a knee and listen to what I had to say, because I f--kin' made it, and my way works and all this stuff. Then I go home and I go, 'Oh my God, what's happening to me? I gotta get grounded here.' "

Downey got Tropic cowriter and actor Justin Theroux the gig writing Iron Man 2. Theroux is just crawling out from under the pile of Iron Man comics as we speak.

"I've just stopped marinating in all the Iron Man lore that I didn't know, and I'm sort of firing up the chainsaw and ready to attack it," said Theroux. "You're writing for Robert Downey Jr., so, at the end of the day, that's an enormous amount of fun."

The new collaboration has Downey all fired up to slip into the gold suit again. "I'm stoked," he said. "I'm into it. I'm excited to do another Iron Man right."

It's nice to see an actor get really excited about doing the sequel to a franchise, I guess.

I thought Daredevil was alright. It's little spinnoff on the other hand is another story What Daredevil the movie lacked was the same thing that Daredevil the comic lacked.

I liked Daredevil when I saw it. Didn't love / hate it. Just liked it.

Daredevil's base concept isn't any more ridiculous than Batman's.

That said, Daredevil's writing usually sucks.

I require more suspension of disbelief for a blind man who can fight like a crazy ninja than for a guy who trained to become a ninja can learn to use fancy toys that he can afford to buy. But both are still silly and I still enjoy them, so eh

Seriously. Magic Blind Man Vision is a ghey conceit. "Money can buy you anything" might also be unrealistic but at least it's more movie-plausible.

I did not expect Daredevil to be anything but bad. Having seen it with that mentality, I quite enjoyed myself watching it. Mostly because of all the injokes and hidden easter-eggs, though, and less for the actual story. It felt like a rather standard comic-book 'Secret Origin' style plot, which was exactly what it was meant as.

I notice that none of them have Magic Blind Man Vision.

I don't see the difference between Magic Blind Man Vision and Wolverine's claws that just so happen to be coated with the world's strongest metal and are unbreakable.

I was more comparing Magic Blind Man Vision to any comic book character's coincidental advantage against anyone he or she wants to fuck up.

I think that almost all of the time that any coincidental advantage is kinda ghey, but so what?

Not all superhero conceits are equal; that's what I'm saying. I could create a superhero called Giant Rainbow Man who grows to an enormous height every time a rainbow appears, but I don't get to say that my superhero is as plausible as any other.

I'll rephrase, as I screwed up and didn't say it properly last time: I think almost all of the time, coincidental advantages(Such as Magic Blind Man Vision or the Wolverine example) are equally as ghey as each other. The exceptions being stupid shot like Giant Rainbow Man.

I don't see why Magic Blind Man Vision is in the Giant Rainbow Man group, especially considering it's not that hard to farg him over with it.

I liked what they did in the most recent issue of GRM where Dr. Cloud obscured the sky so that no rainbows could appear.

If you're asking me to say that Daredevil's conceit is less ghey than Wolverine's, I won't do it. Just about every Marvel superhero is in the same category in that regard, IMO. I was comparing it to Batman, who has no powers of any kind. That in itself allows the character to be taken in a more real-world direction, since you don't have to rely upon pseudoscience just to explain his existence.

Yes, especially when the Daredevil movie operates on this: radioactive waste blinds a boy, he gets his "radar sense" and can then not only fight, but does it in such an unbelievable way.

War Machine's definitely going to be in it. They all but said that in the movie itself.
