I get periodically hit up by the Young Hetero Men For Jesus people, don't know what they're all about. Also the Girl Scouts, but they're easier to push out of the way.

But the young jeebus men are easier to molest.

unlike Girl Scouts - there's no one who loves them unconditionally and wants what's best for them

am I the only one who sees a little sentiment against Wally in this article. maybe I'm just a company man. Shrug.gif

Lots of people seem to unreasonably hate Wal-Mart, as if they put Mom and Pop stores out of business magically, and not because all the local consumers make a choice about where to shop.

I, personally, detest walking inside of a Wal-Mart when I don't have to - they're way overcrowded and run down out here in California. But I don't fault them their right to do business how they want.

I shopped there all the time in Texas, when I had an option of, like, five or six of them within a ten minute drive, all of varying levels of upkeep. Especially nice during the three o' clock in the morning toy runs/impulse paintball gun buying sprees - which is another downside to California Wal-Marts...none of them are open 24 hours.

Depends where you go, most of the Walmarts in my area ARE 24HR stores (look up Modesto, Ceres and Stockton). I tend to find that if it's not a SuperCenter, it's in shoddy condition. The ones in Modesto and Ceres are standard WalMarts and it's flat scary.... like going to the State Fair without a midway. Always crowded, never enough checkouts open, crap flung all over the place and employees that look like they're straight from Pelican Bay state prison.

They are currently opening A "hybrid" store in another part of Modesto. It's too small to be labeled as a Supercenter, but it'll have more grocery than the current store has. I have no stake in it anymore since I moved from Modesto, but hopefully this new store will draw people out of the pit of an old store.

Wow...I dunno why, but the thought of that chills me to the bone. How evocative! I'm gonna steal that analogy...

Jeez WTF would they or anyone want them to go Union? You think that customer service line is long now, that thing will wrap around the f'cking building like its black friday (EVERY DAY) once it goes union.

Seriously do we really need them to go union? They (imo) do alot in hiring senior citizens (who could not stop you even if they had a D-line formed out of them) and foreigners (who don't speak a word of english but can smile at you till you go crazy). Wal-Mart, play nice...

Live better, work.
Nomolos
yea, walmart shouldn't be bullying people to vote...thats what Union organizers do.

noone...NOONE who works for walmart told anyone how to vote. if anyone even TRIED to do that they will be fired and sued by the company. they do not take those kinds of risks.
someone can say democrats and unions support each other...thats true though. so you can't sue someone for that. but that's not telling someone how to vote.

So, there should be no problem with an investigation, then, right?

*is on Wal-Mart's side before you go getting all huffy-puffy*

But I do think it's not outside the realm of possibility that some employees acted without Wal-Mart Corporate's knowledge (and therefore consent). I mean, otherwise we probably wouldn't be having this discussion to begin with. And if they did wrong, they need to be dealt with appropriately. If they did no wrong, there's nothing to worry about.
Nomolos
well that's what I mean, if walmart find out that someone did that they will at least lose their job. but its absolutelt possible it happened...just not as a corporate mandate and therefore, no there should be no problem with an investigation.

I used to work at a Wal-Mart distribution center... they are very very VERY VERY VERY anti-union, and if there were an attempt to unionize at the facility, they would close it down and re-open it somewhere else.

*in before pain10.gif *

Well, the province of Quebec just gave a ruling about a union in a Walmart Tire & Lube.

Doesn't mean much when/if the store is going to close.

Could mean a ton if the Canadian Supreme Court is already interested in hearing from employees of stores that were closed over the unionizing...

One of the girls working the checkout lane at the local Wal-Mart here was wearing a big Obama pin on her smock. She kept trying to flirt with me but I thought she was ugly, so I ignored her and walked off.
DarkNarcoleptic
Well, you said she worked at Walmart, what were you expecting?
The Diesel
What the f*ck are you talking about? I wasn't expecting anything. I was simply making a statement about a girl that works at Wal-Mart wearing an Obama pin and flirting with me.
Stormtrooper53
It was a joke. Ugly girls work at Wal-Mart. Sheesh.
The Diesel
Actually, there are some pretty girls that work at this Wal-Mart. One advantage of being located in a college town.

It also helps if you don't live within a 500 mile radius of Bentonville, Arkansas.
Haggisjin
True, I can't find a Walmart anywhere around here.
Lord Madhammer
Living in Texas, I'm within easy driving distance of at least five Wal-Marts.
Blitz-Wing
Same for California, there's 6 Walmarts within 30mi of me... but only one Supercenter.
Lord Madhammer
all of them are within 15 miles and are all Supercenters. optimuslaugh2.gif sweatbead.gif
DarkNarcoleptic
Yeah, same here in good ol' Alabamy...
Lord Madhammer
To be honest, that's one thing I won't miss. At all.
DarkNarcoleptic
I wish there were at least ONE grocery store as close as any of the Walmarts here.
Stormtrooper53
For us, there is a grocery store right across the street from the Wal-Mart and these are the two closest places to shop for food (by about 8 miles). Unfortunately, you have to be careful at the grocery store (Winn Dixie) because, like, only 5 people shop there a month and you've gotta watch the expiration dates. Everyone shops at Wal-Mart.

For EVERYthing.
Blitz-Wing
Right now, the big fights are between Super Walmarts and WINCO Foods (WINCO = Washington Idaho Nevada California coOperative). Super Walmarts are getting shot down left and right, while the land that Walmart targeted gets approved for use by Winco. Funny thing is, Winco gets the nod because they're not considered big box. However, Winco literally smashes the pricing of a traditional grocery chain. So basically, Winco is doing the same thing that Walmart would have done except only in grocery.

I tend not to shop at Winco, though, because:

1) The quality of their generic food brands is pretty foul

2) They don't allow debit/credit sales (although this might have changed recently)

3) Costco Syndrome type checkout lines.
Lord Madhammer
Odd, you'd think that a store called "WINCO" would be awesome.

How does this even happen in this day and age?

I think the last time I paid cash for an item, it was a pack of Big League Chew or something.

Wal-Mart has a new trick up their sleeve. Open a plain Wal-Mart then turn it into a Super at a later date.

Yes and no. Alot of standard (READ: older) Walmarts have become what is called Hybrids. They compact the aisles a little bit and reduce the in-store warehousing so they can squeeze in a couple of food chillers. They're not bona-fide "Super" because they lack meat, produce, deli and bakery. I have seen, though, where some of these hybrids will 'import' bakery goods from the Super locations.

I love walmart. Its not like they are displacing any great cultural center here. There are no mom and pop coffee shops or bookstore or anything more charming that a lowes with a crumbling parking lot and floor tiles that refuse to come clean.

They kept a walmart out of the town where I live and development pretty much went negative. All the crappy little hardware stores etc... down town still went out of business because everyone still goes to walmart. Its just farther away and now the town that was just as crappy as ours has all sorts of cool restaurants etc...

All of the Tim Horton`s coffee shops around here have the same policy. They claim it`s to reduce the time people have to wait in line because they just have to make change instead of taking the time to operate confusing electronical machinery.

A pain in the a$$ is what it is.

We`ve only got 2 Walmarts in Barrie right now, but I`m told one is going to move and become a SUPERCENTER. Yippee. Like the parking lot wasn`t crowded with enough sasquatch women ..
Nomolos
that thing of turning them into supercenters has been going on ever since the supercenters started. i shop there cuz of my employee discount. best prices indeed.

where you moving to Hammer?

I'll never quite understand the hate for Walmart when it comes to shopping there. I mean, the one by my house seems slightly mis-managed, but a grocery store is a grocery store, and where the hell is anyone supposed to buy general merchandise these days anyway if not at a Target, Kmart, or Walmart? And besides, doesn't everyone realize that if Walmart wasn't the big gorilla, there would simply be a different big gorilla...not a utopia of mom and pop grocery stores, hardware stores, and DVD stores?
DarkNarcoleptic
I understand the necessity of a big gorilla nowadays, which is why I'm glad it exists. That way I can feel free to shop at other more pleasant places, and go to Walmart when there's something I just can't find anywhere else.
Lord Madhammer
Wal-Mart is gross. <--- the root of my issue with it
