hen add San Diego into it, our sales tax is 7.75%, and in some cities (read: El Cajon) the tax is even higher at 8.25%. Gotta love it.
I live in Washington State, and our sales tax is 8.61%, so I don't see how California has the highest in the country.
Also...8.61%!!!! WTF are you b!tching about???
The default state tax is 6.25%. There is a 1% temp tax still in effect from 1990. Then there are the county and local taxes. County taxes swing widely. For instance, in San Joaquin County, we pay 7.75%. 0.5% of that is for a transportation tax (Measure K). However, if you live in Manteca (part of SJCo), they pay 8.25% because they voted in a tax to help pay for safety services.
So while the state default tax rate might be lower, in some parts (like San Francisco county where you can pay up to 9.25% sales tax), it's very high.

So...what is the complaint here, really? That the Governor of California wants to raise taxes to pay for an increased budgetary deficit?
Why won't people understand that you have to PAY FOR THINGS THAT YOU SPEND MONEY ON? Roads, wars, public healthcare, the extermination of ManBearPig, these things all cost money. Taxes are where that money comes from. And if our dollar is devalued to the Nth degree, such as it is today, then MORE MONEY IS REQUIRED. Thus, higher taxes.
I'm just flabbergatsed that California has a Republican governor who is pro-environment and ZOMG sees the need to raise taxes. Better watch out, Mr.Governor, pretty soon you'll be the "Tax-And-Spend-Republican"!
The issue isn't about taxes being raised, dude. It's about them being dirty, lying jackasses and calling it TEMPORARY. They played that game on us before, pulled the wool over our eyes and we let them get away with it. They call it temporary because the public are morons and will think OH WOWZ! IF ITS JUST TEH TEMPS IT'LL GO AWAY. OK, ME THINK I GO FOR IT!
