There seems to be alot of talk lately about The Dark Knight taking over Titanic as the biggest grossing film ever. According to one article, however, it has a LONG way to go. Furthermore, if you take inflation into account, Titanic isn't even the biggest grossing film of all time.

No one will ever touch Gone With The Wind's adjusted-for-inflation record, because that record was earned in a different world, without the option of waiting for DVD or cable - people saw that movie every chance they got. They had to.
But, in a non-adjusted-for-inflation sense, I think The Dark Knight has a reasonable shot at Titanic's domestic record and zero shot at it's worldwide record.

One thing that the article didn't mention is that a lot of people don't go to the movies anymore because the DVD comes out within three to four months of the theatrical release date. Back in '97 you still had to wait about a year for a movie to come out on VHS...

I'm really surprised that Dark Knight hasn't tapped into the same middle-aged-housewife-stuck-in-a-loveless-marriage demographic that Titanic did.

I just want everyone to remember this the next time someone says a movie sucks and everyone gets all huffy and says sarcastically "Yeah, it MUST suck considering how much money it made."

Titanic came out at a time when I supported Leonardo Dicaprio either dying or being mentally challenged in every movie he was in. Now he has become an actual entertaining actor so I don't know what to think.
