It really pisses me off that the series took so long getting a sense of what the HP universe should be like

but hey
I think the pacing was intentional though. Rowling wanted the world to slowly expand with each volume.
1st 2 books: The outside wizarding world is mostly shown to Harry through the hearsay of others around Harry, he really has no concept of what goes on beyond the walls of Hogwarts
Book 3: Politics and intrigue begin to filter in, Harry is starting to get a sense that people really see him as someone important, fortunately he doesn't let it go to his head.
Book 4: OMG there's a whole world out there beyond even England, oh and hey, that asian chick's pretty hot.
Book 5: Politics, Politics, Politics, and maybe that asian chick wasn't so hot after all. Also, angst.
Book 6: Holy shot, we all gonna die. Screw the man he can't help us. BTW, Evil has to come from somewhere. And what's with the hair where there was no hair before?
Book 7: School's for losers, you'll never really know what's going on until you experience it for yourself.
