From the creators of the Matrix and the Director of V for Vendatta comes Ninja Assasin
To be released Jan 2009.

I am a big fan of the Wachowskis and loved both Vendetta and Speed Racer.
I am also a big fan of RAIN(bi) a Korean Popstar who has international hits in music, film, and Televison.
Although he starred in a number of sit coms and soaps in Korea he garnered international Critical praise with his role in I'm A Cyborg But It's OK by Park Chan Wook (Oldboy)
He made his american acting debut as Taejo Togokhan in Speed Racer as is now poised to burst into the action scene with Ninja Assasin.

Now I realize that my enthusiasm may be biased - but so far everything I've seen and heard about this film looks awesome! So here it is with it's own thread!

Behind the scenes footage filming in Germany (you can see the scene that is in my Sig)

The JOBLO Interview is very nice as well.

Despite the reporter clearly not communicating clearly (and the interruptions from the interpreter) Rain seems to be charming and fully capable of pulling off leading man status.

(oh and check out that poster in the behind them!!!)

Get it? Because the movie stars "Rain" and I hate the Wachowski Brothers. Oh, I'm so clever.

The saving grace here - is that it is being directed by James Teague so there is still hope even for you Hobbes! Yes, even for you!

Yeah, that was the case.

Although I hated it much, much less than the Matrix sequels or the last hour of Speed Racer that I saw...so anything's possible.

I'd see that.

I don't get how you can hate the Wachowskis, Hobbes... "extreme disappointment in their considerable talent being squandered in overlong, self-indulgent sequels" perhaps.

Let's face reality - it's not like they had the overlongness or self-indulgence of the sequels forced upon them. It'd be one thing if they were contractually obligated to Warner for these sequels and were forced to implement stupid studio notes against their will.

It's pretty clear the only movie they were reigned in on was the original Matrix, when they were still a new commodity and lots of money was at stake. It wasn't until that film was a success that Warner took the leash off and we got to see how "talented" they really are - which seems to be "not very" now that we've seen the types of films they make when they have total control over the final product.

My only real issue with the Matrix sequels and Speed Racer (Vendetta doesn't count IMO since they didn't direct it) is their lack of self-restraint in the script stage and in the editing bay.

And for what it's worth, I think most people need an artistic collaborator in order to succeed (i.e. someone to tell them that their bad ideas suck). Without that, it becomes The Phantom Menace.

But that sort of stuff, to me, is everything. I'll generally put up with anything else so long as you don't bore me. Hold my attention. And part of competently holding an audience's attention is to know when to cut your cave rave/Neo-Trinity sex montage and get on with the actual story.

All the Philosophical Discussion in Ancient Greece won't make up for it later - IMO of course.

I liked the first ten minutes of it.

Okay, I'm exaggerating. But, really, if you have the DVD version of the film with commentary, turn one on and listen to how much discussion actually takes place during the course of that montage, and you'll get a sense for just how long it really is. Same with the Neo Vs. Dozens of Agent Smiths After Neo Talks To The Oracle Fight.

I get it, move on with the story already!
Lord Madhammer
I LIKED ALL OF THAT STUFF

I don't mind when people taking their time with the visual storytelling. That's cool to me. And if you're so inclined, you can dissect it later for said philosophical what-nots. What isn't cool to me is when they actually tell you the philosophy rather than having it just be a theme in the movie. CAUSALITY skeletor.png

Rain Training to become the Ninja Assasin "Raizo":

QUOTE
Photos of Rain training for his role in his next movie, “Ninja Assassin” were released recently. He is seen wearing a singlet, holding two sword props in his hands as he went through sword fighting techniques. But most importantly, you can see his much talked about significantly beefed up body. For his role in “Ninja Assassin”, Rain specially hired trainers that trained the cast in “300″ to beef up his body. He went through more than 10 hours of intense training and strict diet each day just to sculpt his body as seen in the pictures. Rain had revealed in an interview when he was back in Korea recently to promote “Speed Racer” that he was surprised with his body transformation, “I have a body that’s difficult to build up muscles actually. But just four months of intense training, I was pretty shocked at the results.” Rain revealed himself that during his work-out period, he has only had a diet consisting of chicken breast, raw fish, sweet potatoes and salad. The work-out lasted for four months and saw his body fat level reduce from 12% to only 5%. “Ninja Assassin” is Rain’s follow-up movie with The Wachowski Brothers after “Speed Racer”. Filming started at the end of April in Germany and is expected to hit cinemas next year.

Nah, too swishy. You'd hear them coming a mile away.

Unless...

They want you to think that they're not ninjas. "Oh, that guy's not a ninja, he's wearing parachute pants." Then he flips out and kills you because you're not expecting it. After that, he could just walk away because anyone that saw the dead body would think "A ninja must have got him," and if they saw a guy wearing parachute pants walking away they'd say to themselves, "Well, it couldn't have been that guy."

On second thought, great idea Glue!

Hunter, will he be wearing parachute pants in the film?

Did you just ask Hunter if the protagonist would be wearing pant's you just defined as "swishy"?

Why would I need to wait for a Ninja movie to get that....
Oh the things i could post....

Actually I had considered posting one of RAIN's Dancing photos as a compare and contrast to show how much bulk he had - but I realized that I was the only one who really cared.

Also of note -the film has Rick Yune as the Villain. Yune was the bad guy in The last James Bond movie - he was the guy who got diamonds exploded into his face.

Which also leads me to another observation, again I'm not sure if anyone cares but:

It seems like in America we white wash all of the Asian cultures. So if the story calls for a Japanese character, the casting call would be for any Asian actor. Now this isn't anything new but what I have realized lately is that most of the time (regardless of what ethnicity the character is) the actor will be Korean.

Unless its specifically a Chinese star (like Jackie Chan or Jet Li for example) random asian dudes in American fiction, tend to be Korean.

I wonder if there is something about their features that is more attractive to American audiences or something...

It doesn't mean anything - just an observation.

No one ever care's what nationality other races are in media either though. In terms of casting.

Actually, I don't know if you guys read any of the interviews, I think the one on AICN specificaly references the Comicon footage - but the action in this film so far seems to be really really awesome and intense. Like the culmination of everything Ninja fans have been waiting for since the dawn of cinema. (like why is it that ninjas and dragons are unable to make good movies -like EVER! You would think that the subject matter would be fool proof).

I will try and look up the report on the action and quote it here -but the initial sense that i got from reading descriptions is that the action scenes in the film are going to play like a cross between Kill Bill and Jason Bourne. Which makes me go eektf.gif drool.gif

FYI when I lived in Taiwan, we knew a guy who was a Chinese teacher at the American school in Taipei. He was a Polish dude with blue eyes and blond hair, and he'd always get work in Taiwanese films as the random white guy. He showed us a picture once where he was playing a Nazi in a Taiwanese production.

So I think that kind of thing is pretty common -- they have a hard time telling us apart too.

My point wasn't that "they all look the same" I get that - I know that - its old news.

My point was that it seems like most actors end up being Korean cast as "the asian guy", rather than a random mix of Asian actors getting cast as a random mix of Asian characters.

So using your example - it would be like ALL random white guys in Taiwanese productions just happened to be Polish.

Again that wasn't my point -but using your example - the observation i was making would be akin to making ALL "random european guys" Austrailian. Why?

This is becoming more of a pain than I intended and I apologize, and i wasn't trying to batch or anything, just something I noticed but lets look:
Rain has played "Japanese" in two films now.

Random Asian couple in LOST = Korean

Heroes - yes Maki Oka is Japanese (Hiro) but his buddy Ando who is supposed to Japanese also - the actor is Korean (James Kayson Lee)

Arron Yoo has made a career out of playing the random asian dude.
So has John Cho (even playing the Japanese Sulu in the new Trek)
both Korean.

Yune (Random Asian James Bond villian) = Korean.

frak... now i cant think of any more.... but
