FYI when I lived in Taiwan, we knew a guy who was a Chinese teacher at the American school in Taipei. He was a Polish dude with blue eyes and blond hair, and he'd always get work in Taiwanese films as the random white guy. He showed us a picture once where he was playing a Nazi in a Taiwanese production.

So I think that kind of thing is pretty common -- they have a hard time telling us apart too.

My point wasn't that "they all look the same" I get that - I know that - its old news.

My point was that it seems like most actors end up being Korean cast as "the asian guy", rather than a random mix of Asian actors getting cast as a random mix of Asian characters.

So using your example - it would be like ALL random white guys in Taiwanese productions just happened to be Polish.

I thought they were mostly Hong Kong transplants... but then Korean exports *are* up.

Random Asian couple in LOST = Korean

To be fair, Jin-Soo and Sun-Hwa Kwan are a random Korean couple in the series.

I didn't know that Ando's actor was not Japanese, but he never did look very Japanese to me.

I know that. And I love their story. I especially love how the sympathies shift as you learn more about them.
and i totally screamed at my tv when ackbar.png

But the point is - the story is about a plane that flies from Australia to Los Angeles. It seems odd that the writers/producers picked a Korean couple. (why not a Japaneses couple? Why not refugees from Vietnam or something?) And that's fine. Actually its not "odd" except that as I watch modern American media it just seems a little too "consistent"

EDIT - Removed LOST Spoiler - my apologies.

I'm glad he did. I've only been watching the series on DVD, so I haven't seen any of Season 4 yet. Thanks Hunter!

Because they picked a Korean couple? Shrug.gif If Sun and Jin were Japanese or Chinese or Ethiopian, would it really change their story all that much?

Your original complaint was that they were picking Korean actors to play Japanese (and other nationalities), I was just saying they were Korean actors playing Koreans in the show.

EDIT: And I accidentally read the spoiler stuff when I quoted you. Where's the "crying my eyes out" smiley?

Wait, is this thread about ninjas, Hutner's yellow fever or Korean actors playing all Asian nationalities?

(The latter is true, however, Grace Park is Korean and she's playing a Cylon.)

I wasn't complaining just observing. Also to clarify my observation - its not that korean actors play other roles, its that regardless of the role - Korean performers seem to have inundated American media, more so than any other Asian nationality. Grace Park is another good example, thank you! in fact Boomer is the most bonable person on BSG IMO

And trust me -I'm not complaining. At ALL! Koreans are the lovely IMO.

And I apologize - I am going back to delete the LOST spoiler. I thought it was past tense enough to be safe - but am realizing that it does kinda feel like a trap since its in an unrelated thread.

Seriously though - i didnt mean to derail the thread... now, back to ninja goodness...

Haggisjin
Yune played a Korean bad guy in that horrible James Bond film

But yeah... I don't know why Koreans get more play. They have a fairly booming film and tv industry going on right now. Maybe they're easier to work with (visa's and so forth) than Hong Kong actors? Maybe within America there are more people of Korean decent due to refugees from the Korean War? There's plenty of good Japanese actors, but they usually can't speak a word of anything other than Japanese. Maybe Korean actors are more linguistically versatile? Shrug.gif

FYI Ando's Japanese on Heroes sucks donkeys. My wife can't even understand him.

Is The Wachowskis' 'Ninja Assassin' Really 'Ninja Scroll' in Disguise?

by Jessica Barnes Feb 22nd 2008 // 3:32PM

So there's a little mystery starting to brew on the net surrounding the Wachowskis' action flick, Ninja Assassin. Over at kungfurodeo.com, there are reports that a new casting call for the flick is proof that the brothers are actually making a live-action version of the classic anime, Ninja Scroll. For those fans of Scroll out there, maybe you can tell me if the characters on the casting sheet over at Freebase Media look a little familiar.

The story of Ninja Scroll is set in feudal Japan. A ninja-for-hire is forced into fighting an old nemesis that has set his sights on toppling the Japanese government. Complicating matters is a group of super-demons under the bad guys control. So far, not much is known about the plot of Ninja Assassin, but all we do know is that Korean pop star Rain has scored a part in the James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) directed flick.
Now that DiCaprio's live-action Akira has gotten the go-ahead, it makes logical sense that other studios would start looking for their own anime remakes. Hollywood is known for beating a trend into the ground; it's about time that the art of anime is next on the block. So far, nothing has been confirmed, but according to various reports, the character names on the casting sheet bear a striking resemblance to the characters from Scroll. Ninja Assassin is tentatively scheduled to shoot from March to July in Berlin for Warner Bros. So what do you think? Are Wachowski and company keeping their project under wraps until it's time to reveal a big surprise? Or is Ninja Assassin just another ripoff, er, I mean homage to the anime that they seem to love so much.

Interview with Naomi Harris:
QUOTE
4 Aug 2008 NINJA ASSASSIN
An Interview with Naomie Harris

Outside of either playing the wife or girlfriend in a film, there aren't that many leading roles for women, let alone a strong role. Most times when you see a female in a leading role, she's probably playing a character who's going through some type of depression. To look for a strong role, some try action films because it gives them the chance to flex 'their muscle', sort of speak. Just ask Sigourney Weaver or Pam Grier and look at their film credits. For Naomie Harris, she's looking to join that group. With roles in '28 Days Laters', 'Pirates of the Caribbean', 'Miami Vice' to name a few, Harris has had not just good roles, leading or supporting, but strong roles that others can follow.

Coming up next for Harris is a leading role in another action film that has her cast opposite one of Tokyo pop stars, Rain in 'Ninja Assasin'. Directed by James McTeigue, who last did 'V for Vendetta', Raizo (Rain) is one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them…and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge.

In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Defying the orders of her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), Mika digs into top secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders.

While at San Diego Comic Con to hightlight the film for fans before its release next year, Harris spoke to blackfilm.com about her role in the film and taken on strong roles.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What role do you play in the film?

Naomie Harris: I play Mika Coretti and she's a forensics researcher and she has this obesssion with ninjas because she happened upon a piece of evidence which proves to her that ninjas exist, whereas everyone else believes they don't. She continues with this obession until her fantasy world becomes real and she becomes sucked into an adventure with Rain's character.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What led you to take this film?

NH: There were various reasons. One is working with James McTeigue. I didn't know how fabulous it was going to be until I started the movie. It was the script really. It was a great character, and it was well rounded. Action movies have really rounded central characters that you really care about or can go on a journey with.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How much physical work did you do for the film?

NH: For me, very little at all, which was great, but for Rain, he had 4 months, everyday, six days a week. I had one session where they worked me out to know what Rain was going through every day, and I actually couldn't keep. It's so intense. He went through a lot.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What was the most challenging aspect of the film?

NH: I found the physical demands actually challenging. Whereas Rain is in his body as a dancer, I'm quite the opposite, and I realize that this is important in an action movie. In a film that is heavily chereographed, if you mess up, someone can get injured.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Between '28 Days Later', both 'Pirates of the Caribbean' films, and this film, where does the love for action films come from?

NH: I love action movies because I actually don't love action movies to be quite honest with you. I like strong women and you usually strong women in action films.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why do you think you are getting these roles?

NH: It's interesting because I never see myself as a strong person, but my friend said to me the other day, 'Why do you think you get cast in these types of films?' and he answered himself by saying that I am a strong women. I may not see myself as that but's that who I am, and I thought about that and realized that I have always done what I wanted to do and I think that's why they choose me because that strength is ine me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some have called you the new 'Pam Grier' because she always played strong female characters.

NH: I liked that idea. I'm flattered by that statement.

21 Aug 2008 - Ilan Eshkeri: Ninja Assassin

Ninja Assassin, the upcoming Warner Bros. action picture produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers, gets an original score by Ilan Eshkeri, an up and coming composer best known for his Stardust score and the music for Hannibal Rising. James McTeigue, who directed the previous Silver/Wachowski production V for Vendetta, is helming Ninja Assassin, which tells the story about the confrontation between two young ninjas from the same clan. Naomie Harris, Ben Miles and Rick Yune star in the film, which is scheduled to come out on January 16 next year.

Twitch has a new update on the film, not much really but they have an AWESOME! Stunts video up. Sadly it also appears that the film is being delayed as it now has no set release date.

Rain Gets Physical in the Stunt Reel for NINJA ASSASSIN
The stunt reel showcase Rain in top physical shape and training swordplay choreography with the 87Eleven stunt team to prepare him for the fight scenes. I’m impress on how well Rain is able to move swiftly under a complicated set of steps. This will definitely get the fangirls hunter.png swooning hysterically.
