The United States is now winning the war that two years ago seemed lost.

Limited, sometimes sharp fighting and periodic terrorist bombings in Iraq are likely to continue, possibly for years. But the Iraqi government and the U.S. now are able to shift focus from mainly combat to mainly building the fragile beginnings of peace — a transition that many found almost unthinkable as recently as one year ago.

Who was against the surge?

Far be it from me to be contrarian... but I think people tend to forget / not realize / overlook the fact that the country is better off now because we negotiated / paid off Iraqi militants. We had a "surge" in 2005 too, and that didn't go as well.

Which happened before the "surge" of troops, IIRC...

But I was told we already won several years ago.. ?_?

Maybe it's because Sadr has continually enforced a ceasefire amongst his troops. Maybe you should elect him president.

Of course, we should be *glad* that things are going better over there now. But since McCain's camp is trying to score political points off it like "oh see we were totally right," I think some clarity is needed on exactly what is responsible for things being better.

My first post was pretty flippant, because I'm tired of McCain and his supporters acting like this means he's always been right. He omits all the times that he's been wrong (in fact, the surge wouldn't have been necessary if he was right all along) and then expects Obama to suck his nutsack because it appears he may have been right. If I just keep repeating the same thing over and over again, and it eventually happens, that doesn't make me Nostra-fucking-damus.

I'd also like to point out, that violence is down to what it was in 2005. In 2005, nobody was claiming that Iraq was a sugar coated wonderland of fun.

He claims that the surge allowed the Sunni Awakening, even though in REALITY, that happened months before the surge.

And another reason that violence is down: You know all that ethnic cleansing, that the surge was supposed to stop and stuff? It didn't. Violence has gone down because the number of people available to kill has diminished.

Yes, we should all be happy that finally, there may be a way out of this quagmire that our countries have illegally gotten themselves stuck in, but that doesn't mean we should ignore everything else that's going on in the country for the benefit of a soundbite.

Ironically, I wonder if this news actually hurts McCain's campaign, because he's made more of a case of being the better choice with regad to foreign policy; however, if the Iraq situation looks better (e.g. I saw a report that now McCain is willing to support a timetable for withdrawl), it may cause the electorate to shift more attention to the economy...
