The Dark Knight is still bringing in the crowds. In it's second weekend of playing, it has broken 2 more records. The first, for best 2nd weekend performance ($75.6M). The second, for number of days to reach $300M in sales (10 days). These records were previously held by Shrek 2 ($72M) and Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest (16 days) respectively. The Dark Knight currently is the 2nd highest grossing film of the year, just inches away from Iron Man (currently at $315M). WB President Dan Fellman predicts that Dark Knight will overtake the $400M mark in just 18 days. In comparison, it took Shrek 2 43 days to surpass that total. Batman has a long ways to go, however, before it takes the all time spot held by Titanic ($601M)
In other showings, Step Brothers (Will Ferrell & Jon C Reilly) was #2 with $30M, better than expected. The ABBA inspired musical Mamma Mia ranked #3 with $17.8M (total rake $62.7M for 2wks) and X-Files: I Want To Believe barely met estimated takes by drawing in $10.2M for the #4 spot.
