Point is you now have many possible variations on the standard repaint. In fact most of the fandom was doing that pretty consistently (I sill have my "overdrive" with Decepticharge head = Windhcarger)

Don't the Hound/Swindle heads rotate back when you put them in alt-mode? (Haven't TF'd mine in a while.) Even if the pegs were the same, you still couldn't use (for example) Smokescreen's head because it wouldn't be capable of doing the transformation.

I think the heads had to be engineered differently because they all fit into alt-mode differently.
