Rob Liefeld had his good run with Youngbloods and Cable, but since then he's lost his touch. His new characters are based off of Marvel characters, or his greatest character, Cable. Not only that but he has an affinity for putting numerous pouches on characters and drawing weapons after the hands. I don't completely hate the guy though, for a self-taught artist, you gotta give him some credit. Not only that, but he did give us some great characters like Shatterstar, and Cable. Along with the comic company Image, which produced some good comics. What do you guys think of him?

this thread is sarcasticpelicanlb2.gif

This isn't a discussion so much as a: "hai come listen to me rant but i am too dumb to type anything more than one sentence so thar. ceiling cat and stuffs"

So anyway, Leifeld sold a new spec to WB and Bryan Singer based on a Graphic Novel he's finishing. So as much as I think WB just Self-pwned themselves out of business (Speed Racer, Watchmen, Singer, Leifeld) I think Leifeld is doing something right.

And Anatomy has never been a strong point in super hero comics so badmouthing Leifeld's anatomy is shortsighted and ignorant.

I'm not a huge fan of his work or anything but... sheesh grow up people.
Evil Exe
Fix'd, I'll admit I should've added more substance to my post Hunter Rose, which I have now. And I wasn't simply trying to garner attention, I was merely trying to find out what people what thought about him. No back to topic:

That's interesting that their making a movie based on one of his un-published stories. What's it about? Or has it not been confirmed?
Hobbes-timus Prime
I was all about Extreme Studios in high school. When I pull out those books now and look through them, I shake my head and feel a little embarrassed.

J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani will write the screenplay, which follows two down-on-their-luck slackers who specialize in shooting videos of superheroes. They find themselves on the run when they uncover evidence that a legendary superhero actually is evil.

I like the concept. Its like Paparazzi meets Hancock or something right?
Sounds like a story for Kevin Smith though... I am not sure I would trust Liefeld or Singer to develop it.

As for why it's been sold before being published - I think he's probably making the book as Hollywood bait to begin with - and is sending out ashcans or specs or roughs etc. He was probably pitching it to publishers and studios at the same time.

But if its a good concept, and I kinda think it is, then more power to him.
Evil Exe
Yeah, I like it too. He might just be able to make it back to the top scratchchinhmm.gif And it could redeem the paparazzi rodimusgrinstatic.gif I actually like the idea of comics written in mind for movies, there was one at SDCC, that I think was based on that idea.

A lot of people are quick to denounce the Image group. And to be sure, Erik Larsen is the only one who is actually living the dream that IMAGE promised. Everyone else "sold out" or "quit". so to speak.

But I do find it hard to condemn those creators, because I was 11 when Image started and if you weren't into comics at that time then its hard to understand the Amazing shockwaves and sense of excitement that went through the industry. Granted I was percieving it as an 11 year old would... but still it was a pretty powerful statement.

It was like Obama Meets Batman or something....

Spawn and Savage Dragon and StormWatch all hold up pretty well. But Brigade? Team Youngblood? Troll?

What the hell was I thinking?

What about Bedro-er-Badrock? Phew, nearly forgot about that lawsuit! He was one of the more prominent copied characters. By the way check out this picture, it's a character that was created using Rob Liefelds methods:

Those methods are:
1.Draw Cable Body
1a.Draw Grotesquely Misshapen Forearms
1b.Draw Tiny Feet
1c.Draw Humongous Muscles
1d.Draw Large "Package"
2.Draw Weapons With Two Barrels
2a.Must Be Drawn After Hands
3.Draw Millions of Pouches

Isn't drawing like Liefeld fun and easy?

True, but Liefeld's worse than most.
STPrime
atleast he was consistantly bad. what about steven platt? he drew the most bad ass covers or pin up, but as soon as you opened the book the art was super lame with little or no detail. it was like 2 people. liefelds covers, pinups, and actual comic art was all the same.

See, that's the thing. In retrospect, you might not realize that Liefeld was indeed pretty bad. I didn't realize this until I stumbled upon some of my old old X-Force comics recently. I liken the whole thing to the G1 Transformers toon. Because of the nostalgia factor, I remembered it being far better than it actually was. I still love it, but I just roffle when watching it sometimes as an adult. I agree with you about Liefeld not being the only sub-par artist though. And, the introduction of Image comics was indeed an exciting shake-up in the comics industry at the time.

laughlol.gif @ poor Texeira's Supreme. I had such high hopes for one of the most dynamic artists to ever grace the pages of Wolverine. His style was so graphic and raw.
Hunter Rose
You misread my post - I was discussing the influence the entire IMAGE group had on the comic industry. That Image group included Leifeld.

I still feel that the creation of Image was a milestone in the comics industry -but it might not have been as earth shattering as the 11 year old thought it was.

As much as we internet jockeys want to sit here and lob insults from the sidelines - Leifeld has achieved a very real level of success.
Cool Hand Lube
musicalnote.gif Hunter loves Rob Liefeld, Hunter loves Rob Liefeld musicalnote.gif

I find it very difficult to respect ANY artist, regardless of how successful, who refuses to evolve artistically over 20 years. His art now is the same damn thing he was drawing when he was on The New Mutants. Just because he was Todd McFarlane's inker does NOT make him a good artist in his own right. Plus, he was A TRACER FOR POOP'S SAKE.

Thank you, that was culminated from just about every terrible Rob Liefeld drawing. But I'm gonna give him this, he's a very decent self-taught artist, he could use a couple lessons though. Hey, has anyone seen this yet? It's a pretty good sampling of his worst work.

Garth Ennis having Superman demand dreamsicles in a comic

*Reading that article*

This is the best insult ever: "It's like when your friend decides he wants to write X-Files fan fiction, but instead of writing his own episodes of the X-Files they're all stories about Mulder and Scully hanging out with their new friend YOUR FRIEND. There is absolutely zero humor or creativity going into it, Liefeld just drew a goddamned Lobo comic, and because he goes LOOK GUYS IT'S LOBO I'M SELF AWARE it's supposed to excuse the fact that he's a lickshot with the artistic ability of 2 girls with 1 cup."

Also, that is the best word censor ever.

In "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way," "Drawing Comics in the Style of Detective Comics Comics," "Aping Shot the Valiant Way," and every other drawing tutorial I've been a part of, it clearly says that every line you draw on a person's face adds to their age. When you're drawing children or sexy young women you give them clean surfaces to suggest youth and a tightness of veins, and when you draw Clint Eastwood in an eyepatch hanging out with Gen 13 you draw all over his face to let people know he's old. Depending on who you talk to, every line can equal a year added onto the life of your character.

Shaft, the young leader of rogue operative team "Youngblood," is 900 years old. And he's looking through really fine blinds. Also, his head is on fire. Image Comics is about living for the moment and taking it to the extreme, they didn't have time to learn that when you stick your head in a shadow it blocks the light on both your face AND your hair. Doing research for the Lion King? Let Disney Comics go to powergliding Africa and look at how lions work, draw the lion from a point of view no man can see, and when the ink is still wet, run a comb over it.

Isn't it funny that when asked to create a universe of characters for his own comic book line Rob Liefeld draws a guy who looks exactly like Rob Liefeld and names him "Shaft?"

I really liked that part. Had to censor it though, but still, it gives you a perspective of how stupid Liefeld is at times.

OK, I think that's going too far. yes, he sucks and occasionally rips stuff off, but come on. He's not Greg Half Of My Art Is Ripping People Off And The Other Half Is Boring Land.
Hadlen Weltall
Well I will give Leifield credit for actually drawing stuff, becase recently I picked up the new Invincible Iron Man, read a couple pages and put it right back down because the artist either just traced pictures from off the internet, or the digital texturing looked like a fricken desktop wall paper. And last but not least it made me sick for how they borrowed a backdrop that really feels inappropriate dispite the scene.

Rob Liefeld can't draw - but Pat Lee can't draw or sign a paycheque.
Cool Hand Lube
Ok, you sarcasticpelicanlb2.gif for 2 reasons:

Reason #1: Pat Lee may be a douchebag of a person, but he can draw, and deserves some amount of recognition for that. Rob Liefeld CAN NOT draw at all, and yet continues to work.

Reason #2: You used the non-USA spelling of "check" (Cheque), and therefore are inferior. But your money's probably worth more than ours so...I guess you still win.

All kidding aside, Pat Lee's style is bad with its own merits - I just think Lee's style of drawing robots (i.e. disproportioned, puffed up, and tiny head) is just as bad (if not worse) than Liefeld's disproportioned, bulging, and tiny headed people drawings.

In any case, both artists rakes in truckloads of cash so I guess they still win.
