B: Even assuming it is Megatrons, isn't it a Fusion weapon, and as such not a Laser?

This is an excellent point. As a fusion weapon, its discharge would most likely be plasma. Though a release of plasma into the atmosphere would probably have a number of effects not depicted, it would cool significantly even in the miniscule fraction of time it took to travel the few feet to Optimus. And in the process of cooling, it would probably change color from something higher in the spectrum (purple) to lower (yellow).

The fusion cannon is the thing strapped to his arm, something which is lacking in that battle.. I always thought that he shot it out of his leg during the battle. Kinda like the Alexander The Great Technique. Have your archers ready in a gulley, pull back as though defeated, enemy follows you (tftmref)"Pick up your gun" and archers let rip.

Kinda like it was megs plan all along, just Hot-Rod got in the way and added to Megs plans aiding him.

I thought it would be ironically funny to have the densest of all the Transformers to be the ones to actually figure it all out. I also thought it would just be funny to have Grimlock have his name constantly being censored out because he just can't speak without saying it. lol

The unidentified wittnesses later wrote to books entitled "How Me Figured Out" and "Ooh, Me Too (a coloring book)" but neither made any money because the authors' names were changed to protect their identitites.

Ok, the grab of him smiling looks a little dif than others I've seen... even though it's funny. But it's obvious why he didn't shoot Magnus! Too many wittnesses! He and Megs had some secret alliance. Cuz guess who came after Magnus for the Matrix? Galvatron, formerly known as Megatron. And deep within the bowels of Unicron, in a secluded location with no wittnesses, Hot Rod just happens to over-power him? Very fishy... Perhaps there was just some disagreement about Hot Rod's payment for the Matrix... or perhaps Galvatron raised the price? Who knows?

Well, it's obvious that there was some sort of conspiracy involved in the killing of Optimus Prime at this stage. The facts:

It's clear that Megatron's gun was not the gun used to kill Prime, but he has clearly taken the blame\credit for so doing since the event. This leads to the question: whose patsy was he?

This leads one to wonder who benefits. The obvious answer seems to be Hot Rod, as he was ultimately made leader of the Autobots. However, this was after a complex chain of events it doesn't appear he could have predicted. Further comments have also indicated he had no real desire for the position of Supreme Commander.

Perceptor clearly did not do everything in his power to save Prime.

Who would have had the means to set Megatron up, either consensually or otherwise, pay off Perceptor to let Prime die, and set up Hot Rod as a double-blind in case his plan went wrong? Only one 'bot could have done it: Ultra Magnus.

Magnus directly benefitted from the crime, immediately after, by being given the Matrix and the status of Supreme Commander. Even after relinquishing both to Hot Rod, he clearly had major sway over the young Autobot leader. Further, as City Commander, he would have had the means to open a communication channel to Megatron using standard wartime communication channels established between Autobot and Decepticon long ago. Further, he would have been in the position to persuade Perceptor it was better to let Prime die even though he clearly could have been fixed.

But why? The motive remains a mystery. Is there some undocumented struggle between the brothers? Was Magnus simply power hungry? Or did he have some advance warning of Unicron's coming, and was seeking to either exploit or prevent that situation somehow?

We may never know. But one thing is sure: Ultra Magnus is the one responsible for the death of Optimus Prime.
