So here's the link to the story:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/13/y...w_n_112429.html

And here is the pic in question:

The article is all about how the GOP has been using scare tactics essentially to frighten voters away from the Obama camp. Whether it's a picture of Obama in robes, or attempting to discredit his by attacking his wife (Obama's baby-mama? Really? laughlol.gif), but the Obama camp is all pissed about it, too.

So, apparently saitire is lost on the democrats, as well.
Lord Madhammer
I think it's just because they're so desperately trying to erase the "Secret Muslim" interwebs rumor that they're getting up in arms about it. I'm sure that from a PR standpoint, that cover doesn't help.

Although if I were drawing the picture, I'd find a way to illustrate how the Secret Muslim thing manages to coexist with the Angry Christian thing. Maybe Obama is also a Militant Hare Krishna.
Hobbes-timus Prime
Yeah, it's completely making fun of the ridiculous far right criticisms of Obama...which makes Rosedogg using it as his avatar rofflicious.

But I'd understand why Obama has a problem with the New Yorker putting out such a public reminder of the rumors he's working very hard to discredit, especially when it's inevitable that the rest of the media will make such a big deal out of it without any actual news going on.

It's a shame he can't use the same "water off a duck's back" response to this stuff in the general election that he could in the primary race.

"TAKE THE FUKCING TULIP, B!TCH!!!!!!"

That's my problem with it, is that Obama isn't being all "water off a duck's back" about it. If he really wanted to discredit the rumors, he should just stand up with a copy of the magazine at a press conference and say "Too bad you couldn't fit the lapel pin in there as well, because then you would have ALL THE REASONS THE GOP CAN COME UP WITH TO NOT VOTE FOR ME, none of which have anything to do with...oh, I don't know...policy?"
( . Y . )
Wow. That's pretty funny.
Hobbes-timus Prime
I like this guy's take on it.

Sadly, "national politics" and "being a real person" are kind of mutually exclusive.

cuz you know if he'd said that, there would be a big shitstorm about "OMG he's denigrating flag pins and therefore hates the flag and America" or whatever crap

Because the satire is lost on the left, that is why.

07laugh.gif I think I've done that a total of three times, ever. They just all happened to be in the last week or so. Just go read the blog post...
ROSEDOGGYDOG
Oh I clicked it...

QUOTE
When liberals start policing the “poor taste” of cartoons so that some people don’t get the “wrong idea,” it only reinforces the notion that all the fearmongering was effective, and perhaps right - and also shows how weak and tenuous Democrats fear their position on terrorism remains.

Echt, echt...

The problem here is context. The image is placed on the cover with no caption or reference, so by itself it can be construed wrong. I'm all for satire, seriously I love the stuff, but what we don't have here is anything differentiating it from a right wing publication charactature. If this picture had been put in the magazine next to the article blasting Fox News it would be a non-issue. As this stands it is a sloppiness that seems a bit out of place for the New Yorker. This smells of Jerry Falwell and Hustler all over again really.

Unfortunately I think the New Yorker gave the crazy rightwingers a weapon they didn't need to have.
Lord Madhammer
Well it's not like anyone really thinks that The New Yorker is a conservative publication. My hope is that most of the blowing-out-of-proportion is coming from cable news pundits who don't have anything better to do.

I swear, that'd be the best job in the universe... someone hook me up with a gig on cable news, I could talk BS all night long tounge1.gif
I.S.T.
I'm going to quote what MH said in a different thread...

Hey I have an idea, how about we all sit around and fling poo at each other instead of debating issues of substance.

This entire thing is nothing but sarcasticpelicanlb2.gif and should be ignored and not talked about.
ROSEDOGGYDOG
Funny thing I watched Fox News last night (surprise, surprise) and they bashed the cover (Mike Huckabee too) except for Alan (The Democrat).
Sularias
I got what they were trying to do, I mean its the New Yorker, its like duh that's satire!

is it in good taste? well probably not,

I think the best comment so far is "Its the new yorker, not Mad magazine!"

I think that statement fits best really.

There was a voice inside me that said "they shouldn't have drawn them doing a fist bump" but I told him to STFU.

the only part that made me say "ouch" was the pills in Cindy's hand.
( . Y . )
Heh.

I liked Leonard Pitt's most recent column about the whole deal...not that what he says shouldn't be obvious to most.

If only they had depicted her taking them away from a sick person...for accuracy's sake and all.
ROSEDOGGYDOG
Yet somehow McCain will/can turn this into a positive and maybe even get a laugh out of it. This time though everyone should get this joke.
Cool Hand Lube
Or McCain will get grumpy and pissy (like he usually does when called out on the carpet) which will be equally exciting.
ROSEDOGGYDOG

I love election season. Politicians who nobody cared about a year ago are all of a sudden on our love / hate list, complete with reasons why we love / hate them, as though they've been our BFFs or lifelong nemeses. What a load of bullshit.
Stormtrooper53
That is the way it works in our celebro-centric culture.

Last year's pop princess is this year's "OMG What a fraking nut job!" celebutard.

During the Super Bowl a bunch of people were pulling for a team they've never given a crap about before, (or maybe even rooted against in previous games,) to beat the unholy Patriots.

And, like it or not, now both "sides" are consolidating their support behind candidates MOST of them were against mere months ago.

musicalnote.gif That's just the way it is... musicalnote.gif

iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much!

At least I can say that my preferred candidate won the primary. So I get a prize or something, I guess.

btw, My long preferred politician of my long prefererd party won the election, and my arch-nemesis didn't even get re-elected into his own seat.

But that's Australian politics which nobody cares about. *is well aware of that fact* raincloudyi7.gif

If it makes you feel better, my mom always used to say that John Howard was a douchebag.

Not in those exact terms, though.
Haggisjin
Most people have always thought he was a douchebag.

But he ran a decent economy and played on peoples fears of foreigners enough to get re-elected a few times. The public only massively started to swing against him once interest rates went up and inflation started rising. That, and he made a huge overhaul of industrial relations laws so that most of the worker protections that unions had fought for over the last half century were neutered, and that pissed everyone off. (note: Australians are heavily unionised, and like our legal protections and benefits kthnxbai)

edit: Also he was opposed in other elections by people of equal if not douche-ier nature. Last year was the first time in a while that the opposition actually had a competent candidate.
