Pakistan will ask the European Union countries to amend laws regarding freedom of expression in order to prevent offensive incidents such as the printing of blasphemous caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and the production of an anti-Islam film by a Dutch legislator, sources in the Interior Ministry told Daily Times on Saturday.
Okay, I'm all for the equality of religion and science and such forth so I say this with all the kindness I can. farg you.
If we remove Mohammed from the list of things you can mock, then we remove everything and may as well just throw the freedom of expression laws away now.

I think they're kind of missing the point of "freedom of expression."
Then again, Pakistan was created to be a Muslim state, so perhaps they can be excused a little for not getting it.
But only a little.

You just can't trust a religion that doesn't allow alcohol and even the simplest, non-offensive, line drawing of a crazy scribbler.
Seriously, I guess the whole rule is meant to prevent idolatry, but they kind of do that with Mohammed anyway. "Peace be upon him?" What the hell is that?

*agrees*
I have no problem with Muslims, but the EU needs to be like "Look, this is our culture and it doesn't affect you. Either deal with it or go f*ck yourselves"
I couldn't help but laugh that the religious scholar in the article was named Aslan.
I'm honestly not sure how the EU will handle this, they do a good job in some fields but are really wacked in others, and have taken "political corectness" too far in some cases.

You know, Christianity used to be like the official religion of Europe... and it's now a post-Christian society. The Muslim thing is a relatively recent development there. So it's not like the two religions can be addressed as though they were the same.

Well that's what the EU does? Okay, not exactly, but there have been a lot of complaints in the papers recently about our government bringing us in line with EU policy on some matters (Health and safety is a popular one) The fact that the EU is actually bringing a lot of stuff in line with the UK is often overlooked in favour of screaming "BIG BROTHER!1!!1!!1" every time a a health and safety law is altered or a double yellow line painted.

I think this is not the issue
I think the issue is a MUSLIM one
there are MUSLIMS in many countries
Pakistan is a MUSLIM state
so they spoke up about the MUSLIM issue
Riots over cartoons aside, mutual respect is indeed a two-way street... the EU has to accept the reality that Muslims find such things offensive, and Muslims have to accept the reality that the EU doesn't.

That's the thing. My understanding is that ANY visual representation of Mohammed is prohibited in Islam. So naturally, a cartoon mocking Mohammed would be doubly insulting to Muslims. But Christians obviously have no issue with visual representations of Jesus, even ones that mock Christianity (though inadvertently so):
