Today I connect my iPod and get this (crosspost)

iTunes 1.6 won't install because it errors out saying it requires Service Pack 2 or higher. Is there a way or a switch to install this on a non-service packed XP? Or what does an MSI check in the registry when it looks for the service pack? Can I spoof it so it will install anyways?

Today iTunes greeted me with a message saying my iPod was unusable unless I upgraded to iTunes v7.6. I went to apple.com to download the new version and it greeted me with this message:

Any help?

Why not install SP2? It doesn't screw anything up.

I thought that, but illegal copy?
Father Time
If you have a legal version, you can download and install the official service pack.

If you have an illegal version, you can download and install an illegal version from Mininova or so.
Lord Madhammer
I don't get why you would a) have XP and b) not have SP2 on it

and

c) buy a Mac

I always find it curious how people who know the most about computers, seem to have the most complicated problems with it... Itunes is basically made for computer n00bs and stuff.
Lord Madhammer
I think the problem is that you're always screwing around with someone else's closed software... don't mess with it and it won't mess with you.

Of course it's not going to be perfect, but I don't really have an interest in 1337 haxx0ring

I don't have an illegal copy. I have a volume licensed XP RTM (release to market) installed from a company I used to work for. If I go to Windows Update, it does a check to see if I am on the corporate domain, and since I am not, it won't validate me and says I need to get my updates from another source.

There is no reason I should have SP2, there is nothing that it offers that I require. Of course, I don't know if SP2 would even install properly on this computer because it is modified to have the few features of SP1 and SP2 that I require, such as USB 2.0 speed and functionality. I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" category. Most people jump to the "you need all these updates to fix vulnerabilities!" but my computer ISN'T vulnerable because I have it pretty locked down.

Its because we try to do things that aren't normally done. This is also how bugs in software are discovered and fixed as well. It is also a great way to learn about software and Windows.

I had a somewhat similar problem a few days ago myself.

I updated my graphics card drivers to try and fix a minor problem in a game demo, and wound up blanking out the menu in it if i had a certain image quality enhancing option on. I got disgusted with the damn thing, and just wound up uninstalling the demo.

Totally. I got the new iTunes to install but it still wouldn't run. So I tried some third-party apps and none of them worked. So now my iPod is basically unusable until I get a new computer. It's okay tho. I've got tapes!

I've opened a ticket with Apple but I doubt they will help me. I am certain that if I can get the iPod to be reset to the factory defaults, it will work again with the older version of iTunes, which I just reinstalled.
Tripredacus
Apple said that a Mac could reset it, so I called up a girl I knew who had a Mac (why do all the people I know with Macs are girls?)

Anyways, the same thing happened. It sayed "you need iTunes 7.6" so she updated but then the new version said "you need Mac OS version whatever" and she couldn't update cuz you need a CD or some other means she didn't have access to. So I was recommended to go to the Apple Store and they could do it. So that's my next step, or call up another girl I know who has a Mac.

WHY DON'T GUYS OWN MACS?

There's your problem. laughlol.gif

There are several INHers who own Macs...

I own a mac, but then I am a Graphic Designer... I also use a PC for everything else because imo, it's better.

But anyway, I think it serves you right for being a sheep and buying a crappy ipod which you only seem to be able to use with itunes... or not even that now as the case may be. If you had brought a creative MP3/4 player you would have had zero problems... I've had a Creative Zen for a while now, and I can just drag and drop files from folders to the Zen, and I didn't have to install anything at all. Also, get WinAmp to play music on your PC.

I only use Winamp to play music, and only older Winamp. The new Winamp (with iPod support) is very laggy and the crossfader doesn't work properly. It is a lot better in the older version. iTunes is also very resource heavy which is why I don't use it to play music. I've been using Winamp since 1998, back when there weren't any programs so you could make your own skins, and they all had to be done by editing all the separate skin images.
