First the European Union, then the NAU, now the Unasur! Who's next? I can't wait until we can include the Moon in our country myself...

Well really, the world really only needs to have about 10 Nations, the source of Americas power in great part probably has to do with our unity over such a large and diverse area.

It just makes the logistics of so many things work better, economy of scale and all.

The problem that majority of people in this world have about global unity is.... a barrier called "national pride", "racial supremacy", etc.
Sularias
racial supremacy is retarded and National pride, well lets think about that.

Most people on the planet have the 5 exact same goals

Food Grub
Shelter A Nice safe comfy Place to live
A Job Something to do all day that you maybe enjoy that provides the first two
Love A Spouse, maybe some kids, extended family good times
Entertainment Fun! when the other 4 are met this becomes a priority

Governments have all kinds of agendas that often are way to far removed from the 5 things people really care about, so national pride is really kind of silly from a logical point of view. "Oh we're different from those guys over there!" uh... no you're not... seriously you're not.

Let us examine this properly. Two posters from two different countries. Indonesia, most people are from that country. The United States, 99% are from other countries... It is obvious that those in the US cannot feel National Pride because they do not exist within their Nation. This isn't the 1940s where most US cities were divided into "villes" of similar national history. We are all mixed up now. We only get to feel Patriotic Nationalism, which isn't Nationalism at all, but total BS.

And besides, Nationalism and Racial Supremacy are two totally different things.

I personally don't think it's a bad thing (but, of course, I was raised an American and would be predisposed to feeling this way). I'm actually pretty averse to even my own heritage. I find being able to see values that are absurd, flawed, or unnecessary in traditional Chinese culture helps me have a greater appreciation for the things I find beautiful and admirable about it, and that this carries over to other cultures.

And, Tripred, I don't think "Patriotic Nationalism" as you describe us having here in the US, is any more BS than any other sort of Nationalism. Sure, there are technical distinctions, though I find them all to be equally artificial. They're just psychological motivators for getting groups to "do something", whatever it may be. And as so happens, that's always easier to achieve when the groups are smaller.

Now one can argue that the similarities and differences between hair/skin colors, facial features/structures have as much meaning as the individual wants them to have. But that pretty much tells you that such effects are far more psychological than they ever are physical.

From my years of experience on Indonesia, from what I saw, from what I heard and what I read from their history, let me assure you that some people are just capable of mixing up Racial/Religious Supremacy along with Nationalism, and came into conclusion of getting rid of minority ethnic/religious group. It happened here on Indonesia according to people I knew here. May 1998 Riot to oust dictator Suharto, but beside the dictator, majority of Islamic Indonesian people also unleashed their wrath upon the minority Chinese ethnic groups and some other minorities. Not to mention the first genocide on their history during 1965 anti-Communist revolution, they also killed millions of Chinese which were accused of being Marxist-Leninist sympathizers for no reason.

And to keep up with the topic of this thread.. I'm also long for a single global government, but as long as nationalism, BS supremacy, etc still exists, I don't think that would happen on the near future. Nah, not even close.

I'm the exact opposite. I think more localized government can better meet the needs of the people represented. I also think that it would help to create a local patriotism to the area and people around you regardless of physical/religious differences. which I think is important to culture and tradition. a global nation would be a disaster on the personal level of involvment in govt. and economically. but we can all disagree I have no problem with that, just giving my thoughts.

The major problem with Nationalist groups is that they do not teach their followers properly. The main recruiting factor is to say "these people are destroying our way of life" and their doctrines teach their recruits that "these people are bad" even if they themselves don't think so. That is to say that they breed hatred more easily than the love of their own people. This is how Nationalist groups are considered racist because their members stray away from the ideals of Nationalism and towards Racism instead. They are mutually exclusive, although they can contain similarities. As an example, if a man who is a Nationalist prefers women of his own color, does that make him a racist? I do not believe so. The only way the man could be a racist if he were to hate or wish harm upon people who are not his skin color. How can I explain this better... the difference is this maybe: "I like my own kind" vs "I hate everyone who is not my kind". It seems similar but its the point of view that is different. I've researched this topic quite well and through personal encounters I have found that most self-described Nationalists do not even understand the difference themselves. I guess the best description of a racist is a Nationalist who goes out of their way to cause harm (through words or other means) to someone they don't like.

But as I said, unfortunately, Nationalist movements almost always use the "race card" as a tool to gain supporters.
