yanno i started out saying that it's a state issue, but i take that back because i don't want to support some elitist group suppressing the rights of somebody else.

Aww c'mon.. I'm sure minority rights could work out on a state-by-state basis. We could call them "free states" and "slave states"! After all, it worked so well before! palpatine.png

I'd just like to point out again that all of the strawman arguments against Homosexual Marriage (against the biblical definition, destroys morality and values, vast majority of the population against it) were used against Interracial Marriage.

I'd also like to point out that Interracial Marriage only became legal because of "activist judges" enforcing the constitution over people's prejudices.

I'd like to point out that Interracial Marriage is now common place, and commonly accepted as normal, and as a right.

And again, I'd also like to ask RDD exactly why he feels that homosexuals shouldn't be married, and how in any way is this different from the struggles for equality from 50 years ago? (and an actual answer to that question, not just relying on saying that people voted against it, because people make unconstitutional laws all the time, in every country, and it's the role of the judiciary to correct them.)

I recall RDD saying his wife was from Mexico. So, if she's Mexican and he isn't, then he would be in a marriage the people didn't want.

i have an interesting marriage >_>

for some reason every girl i've EVER dated has been bi, the one girl i thought was strait turned out later to be bi -_-

so, having been through the bi thing before i told the wife i didn't want her to have to change any part of who she is as long as she doesn't try to pull me into it. she's had several girlfriends, but she's found one she's in love with. she's been living with us for a few months now so you might as well say they're married. it gets tough sometimes what with jealousy and all, but other than that it's pretty smooth sailing. the wife's happy, and i actually get along really well with her gf so we're kinda like buddies. it's kinda farged up, i have almost nothing in common with my wife, but so much in common with my wife's gf that it's uncanny. i guess i know what she just has her preferences XD. funny thing is that we didn't know just how much we had in common until she moved in.

That shouldn't even be taken into consideration. Rights of minorities should never be put to the popular vote. Democracy, within the context of a constitutional monarchy or a republic, serves to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority.

Just think how far the civil rights or the women's suffrage movements would have gotten if left up to a popular vote.

Protection of minority rights is one of the (alleged) virtues of the philosophy of Republicanism with which I agree, when it isn't abused. It helps minorities want to continue participating in the larger democracy at hand. I also think it helps motivate people to promote the values they believe which makes for a more interesting and vigorous society. How boring would it be if one side just dominated and kicked out the minorities they didn't like? Even if those minorities segregated themselves into communities where the rules were tailored to them, I don't think it works that well beyond a certain point, and only at certain scales.

Indeed...as Glue already mentioned, it does nothing to advance society if we put the rights of others to a vote.

1. Field Research did the poll (www.field.com). Independent and non-partisan.
2. From the paper:

May 2004: 41%, 54%, 5%

August 2003 42%, 50%, 8%

You know, the simple fact of the matter is that most of the people who are against gay marriage are that way because they fear that if gays are allowed to marry, more people will become gay until God smites America like he did with Sodom and Gammorah. Until you can convince these people that God will not smite them(and you can't because they'll take any little thing to be an indicator that a smiting is coming), they will fight against gay marriage until their dying breath.

I would almost consider seeing if I could turn gay if I at all believed God existed and it would cause him to smite them.
