Full Version: Why every video game hating adult is an idiot

Grow some balls, take responsibility for whatever your child has done ie nothing... you know why some kids imitate stuff they've seen in video games. Because they're already too hammerhead.gif in the head, and so they'll repeat anything... Dumbasses

Now, I know this is obvious too everyone but these adults, but can anyone actually come up with a decent argument for why video games are bad?
Tripredacus
Yea they are blaming video games because they won't blame themselves. Basically kids are getting in trouble for playing games targetted out of their age group, mostly Mature rated titles. You can't buy an M rated game in ANY of the stores in my area (aside from second hand shops) without photo ID. So unless millions of parents are buying games at flea markets, they are the ones to blame. If they didn't buy it then some adult did and gave it to a kid. They don't demo these games in the stores so that isn't it either.

But as my friend once put it: "People don't just grow pairs. They are f'ed for life."

I agree, but they have been a distraction at some point to most game players who attend school. I remember playing metal gear solid when I had a mid term to study for, and playing my *cough* turbo grafx -16 *cough* while in high school and had homework to do. The difference is I, like many others, got the work done. You are 100% right when u say that they are too hammerhead.gif . Those individuals were destined to do dumb crap with or without video games.

Wanting to be a plumber is fine- that's a goal. People blaming video games for their kids mistakes is not right. My son had video games, but he still got the job done at school. Video games are sometimes used as a scapegoat for an individuals failures.

In contrast... I DIDN'T have video games and still DIDN'T get the job done at school...

Also, another thing: Mario has never done any plumbing... unless you count him jumping down massive pipes which seem a really stoopid idea TBH. Doesn't stop the games being fun, but you know biggrintf.gif
Oh, and

That just shows complete hammerhead.gif. I know some people who are, whatever the nice term is, you know, they have something wrong in the head. Sure, they might not always be able to tell what they're doing is wrong or annoying etc, but even they wouldn't jump off a building thinking they can fly...
Why? Because that's just stupid.

Also, yeah, games are a distraction. But you know what else is a distraction? DVDs, books, computers, TV, newspapers, magazines, painting, shopping, my Warhammer, cards etc
Pretty much everything entertaining is a distraction from school... if it's somethings fault, it's the schools - nobody likes doing homework... so yeah, I wonder why people put it off? biggrintf.gif

Mario was retconned to do plumbing in the live-action movie.

Name one good video game based movie... Can't? Now try the opposite. Can't? That's because Hollywood and Games can't work together...

And games don't HAVE to be movies, that's why they're their own form of media. Most popular games are heavy on narrative content...they are their own movies (with the added content of player interaction).

Which is why some people who don't understand them have a fear of games in the first place- while a movie can't force you to do things (thought it can be argued in cinema form- a captive audience in the dark in front of a giant screen), being an active participant in a narrative puts a player in a more direct, connected experience of the developer's ideas. Of course, that doesn't mean it's going to brainwash players or warp their minds, but it does have the ability to change the way players may perceive some things, if developers communicate their ideas well enough through gaming. And as with ALL newer forms of communication that have been developed throughout history, people who don't understand it react with fear and anger.

And calling them idiots does nothing to create understanding.
Tripredacus
This brings up an interesting idea. Movie games all have a linear storyline. GOOD games let you do what you want. We need more movie or movie-franchise games let you recreate the outcome.
( . Y . )
I think another one of the things you're overlooking is that while there may not be many [good] movie-to-game or game-to-movie projects, the concepts within each flow well from one medium to the other. Big action sequences with car chases, explosions, and gunfight showdowns come straight from film into gaming. Game-like mechanics such as "bullet time" and other various effects helped to make The Matrix what it is in film.

So don't think that Hollywood and the gaming community can't communicate well- they're just better at bartering bits and ideas than making much from entire properties so far.
Tripredacus
I think the real reason is that movie-game developers are under the thumbs of the creators/companies to make a game that is true to the movie. But its obvious that games aren't meants to be played like movies unless they are REALLY done right. And so far those games haven't been made from movies. On the other hand, I can't figure out why game-movies are so bad... I think its partly because the people involved with the script and directing arent the same people who are involved with making the game.

Oh, I should point out that there are several Star Wars games that are really good, as well as even fewer Star Trek games.
I.S.T.
Star Wars really hasn't had a bad game since like 2002...
G.A.S.H.
But they're not based on one particular film, trying to follow it's story. TBH, I'm not sure about Force Unleashed atm...

Episode I: Racer on the Dreamcast
I.S.T.
The episode 3 game as well.

It wasn't a great game, mind you, but it was playable.

Not to mention the Lego Star Wars games, which actually are immensely fun AND follow the plot of the movies. Except with Legos, of course. XD
Hadlen Weltall
This thread got a little off topic here didn't it?

meantime taking what Alana said.

Lego Star Wars is an achievement in fun! For all ages too: I got Lego Star Wars for my dad. Yes: My. Dad. Although he is an enthusiastic, pro-video game advocate, he was among those that first questioned, and later accepted Mortal Kombat.

ON TOPIC:
He was a strong authority on gaming privaledges too, banning us from playing for fighting. My sister once knocked my brother in the junk and they both were FORBIDDEN from any fighting game. I slacked on one responsibility when i was in Middle school and I was banned from playing for a whole school term. And it wasn't from game behavior, it was from personal behavior, things done outside games. If that doesn't speak on the sense that some parents do take action for their pixel obsessed bastards I don't know what does. Then again, this was from personal experience. A lot of bad kids I've come across on gaming, their parents are nowhere in the background, moral of the story is they don't care, and the child learns nothing and when it comes to the real throw of what happens outside the game that lands the kid in trouble, its never the game's fault. Its just an excuse to give reason for it, but not the cause.
