In the wake of the upcoming Olympics, China last Wednesday made another set of rule changes. This one involves visas. Until recently, foreigners residing in China could ask for yearly extensions for their stay without many problems. Now, due to 'security measures', China has changed their policy to only allow a 30 day visa with no extension rights. After 30 days, the visitor must return to his/her country and apply for a new visa. otherwise, the visitor would have to apply for a residency permit, which are extremely difficult to get ahold of.
