It's no coincidence. It really is the answer to the meaning of life, the universe, and everything.

42 isn't the meaning of life. It is Richard Smehlik.

Apophenia sounds like a StarGate Porno...

Still a message only intended for you would be meaningless or random to anyone else..

Forinstance when you walk in on a conversation between two close friends.
They seem to be talking about picking the kids up, they seem to be talking about going to see a show that's £30 a ticket. They seem to be saying that Jon and Mark may be interested in seeing it.
To someone who doesn't know the code but knows them they know that the discussion is out of character because they have no interest in theatre.
To someone who knows their code they are talking about getting a £30 bag of Ecstasy and are going 4 ways on it with the person they are talking to and Jon and Mark.

Now you can have similar instances where someone tells you a lot of information about someone by using codes that you don't recognise but can certainly get messages from. So say your friend tells you that Chris wanted to get away from it all, and Sarah likes new shoes allot. Mark and Catherine go France but never Amsterdam.
You could be under the impression that Chris went on holiday, Sarah can be persuaded to help out with work by giving her new shoes, and Mark and Catherine kiss a lot but never have slept with each other and never will.
Though you could look in deeper if you know how random that code was, Chris was in jail for sleeping with a prostitute Sarah. He slept with her because Catherine was having an affair with Mark but she never slept with him.

Chaos has patterns. Why else do you think the snow on your TV moves in circles rather than zig-zagging around the screen?

I still love Mostly Harmless the most.
Kinda, wraps it all up into one neat paradoxical passage of insanity.

Real answer: The idea of 42 being the answer to the question of Life, the Universe and everything is so wellknown, that a lot of creators use it as an inside joke. Furthermore, as soon as a number gains some significance for you, you will notice it more easily, thus it seems to you that it occurs more frequently. It's more a case of psychology than anything else, young friend.

"Brian! There's a message in my alphabits! It says 'oooooo'"

"Peter, those are cheerios."

You're suffering from paranoid delusions. I suggest you go outside.

I know the feeling. In high school, my football jersey number was 53. Then I started seeing it on the backs of trucks, in the price of stuff I was buying, phone numbers, lockers, IP address, license plates. Then one day it was in my e-mail adress. *looks at username* OMG! THERE IT IS AGAIN!
Talkie Toaster
I feel that the radio adaptation ended it better than the book did. The radio version has another guide entry and a scene set at Milliways

There's a man that lives two buildings away from me who just bought a custom replica of this very car.

Apophenia is often used as an explanation of some paranormal and religious claims, and can also be used to explain the tendency of humans to believe pseudoscience such as Intelligent design.

lol, I bet Conservapedia loves that bit

It is no coincidence that you keep seeing the number 42. However the reason is sadly pedestrian. You notice it when it crops up now because it has become part of your consciousness. It's not there any more than it was, you just have reason to take notice. Enjoy your new Meme.

I am a long time Devotee of the Guide and I see it constantly. In fact my dishwasher has a peculiar habit of getting stuck at 42 minuets for half an hour, every cycle.

I have given up all hope that the Ghost of Douglas Adams inhabits my dishwasher.

Also contributing to the prolific nature of the number 42...
The Hitchhikers Guide has been re guarded as a classic of comedy and Sci-fi writing for many years. Hence it has been read and enjoyed by a great deal of active members of the entertainment industry who deliberately drop the number here and there.

Welcome too the joy of the Guide. Remember to bring a towel.

On the subject of 42 spotting.

I noticed today that in Richard Dawkins' book The God Delusion, he quotes Douglas Adams on Page 42 and Page 142.

(at least in the US paperback edition)
