WalMart and BestBuy, among other retailers, were recently hit with a combined $3.9million fine by the FCC for improper sales of analog TVs. Due to the February 17, 2009 mandate for television stations to cease analog transmission, the FCC had instructed retailers to properly labed analog sets with a disclaimer that they would not work after the switch unless a signal converter was purchased. The fined companies failed to properly label the sets so that customers could see it.

Other retailers involved in the fine included Sears, who owns K-Mart ($1.1 million), Circuit City ($712,000), Systemax (who owns BestBuy, CompUSA and Target) and Fry's Electronics. In a seperate violation, the FCC also fined manufacturers Syntax and Precor Co a combined $1.6million for not shipping sets with a built in digital converter after the March 1, 2007 mandate. In addition, the FCC levied fines against Polaroid and Proview Technologies to the combined tune of $1.1million for failure to adequately test their V-chip technology.
