So yeah, what do you think is a better TV show? For everything, not just going by the fact that Animated is a "kids show" etc... Also, reasons please

Way too soon to tell IMO. We have 52 episodes of BW and an entire four-year story arc to compare to... what, eight or so episodes of Animated?
I will say, though, that Animated has been kicking ass from the get-go. Beast Wars in its early episodes was less confident and was still trying to figure out its characters etc. I'm not faulting the show for that, just making an observation. But it did take a while for the show to hit its stride.

ATM? But I'm broke!
uh, do you mean like, judging the first eight episodes of BW against the first eight of Animated?
edit: Okay, there've been nine episodes of Animated so far, if you count the premiere as three episodes.
Transform and Roll Out Part 1
Transform and Roll Out Part 2
Transform and Roll Out Part 3
Home Is Where the Spark Is
Blast from the Past
Thrill of the Hunt
Nanosec
Total Meltdown
Along Came a Spider
Beast Wars' first nine episodes:
Beast Wars Part 1
Beast Wars Part 2
The Web
Equal Measures
Chain of Command
Power Surge
Fallen Comrades
Double Jeopardy
A Better Mousetrap

Yeah... sorry I meant that
And I'm not really broke but sorta am...

I always like some of the BW episodes, like Power Surge and The Web.
Never got to see Double Jeopardy (strange how both Animated and BWs 8th episode introduces BA?)
Animated seems more fun atm, while BW was a bit more, not plot arcy, but you know, actual threat which could cause massive problems (see Chain of Command)
Did that make sense?

If I have to make the call right now I gotta go with BW. I started watching BW without even realizing that it was part of the Transformers brand. When I heard the name "Optimus Primal" I honestly thought the show's creators were ripping off Transformers. Of course, after an episode or two I finally figured it out, but by then I was already hooked.
Would anyone have started watching TF:A if it had been released under, say, the Go-Bots brand? I'm not saying the show isn't good, I enjoy it immensely, just posing the question. Animated may even surpass BW, but right now I think its too early to make a call.

Blackarachnia was a bit too "mwahahaha" at first IMO... watching early episodes of BW with her is kind of jarring for me b/c of how straight-up typical evil bad guy she is.

I missed alot of series 1 episodes. Channel I was watching it on always cut about the series...

Early BW was bad. I mean, it was just basically "Cheetor does something stupid. Gets assed saved by Maximals. Awwww... bonding!" for the first few episodes. But it quickly got better. Animated started off MUCH better than BW, and has gradually been improving (TotH and ACaS were both fantastic episodes), so I'd actually put it above BW at the same point.
But Animated vs. Beast Wars in its prime? BW wins. Of course, that's a wholly unfair judgement, as Animated is still in its infancy.
Also, I think Animated's toys are better. More show accurate, and less "ugly beast mode with a robot mode that looks like a robot skinned a cheetah and wore it" that early BW toys had.
Also, hands. I can't stand TFs without any hands.

Feb 20 2008, 01:18 PM
I think it's too soon to compare toys until we've had a chance to manhandle them but I realize that's off-topic.
In terms of the series, BW was very good but I think Animated is brewing something special. We already know that Ultra Magnus and, I think, Sentinel Prime have Earth modes. I also think Jazz's alt mode looks Earth-like. This tells me that because of the new Decepticon threat and Megatron's resurgence, some or all of the Cybertronian Elite Guard come to Earth and the war is waged here in a big plot arc. Which, of course, would absolutely own.
Of course, this could all just be me projecting my wishes.

Yeah, it's far too soon right now. Both stories have that 'character introduction' thing going, as well as the cheesier 'personal exploration' aspect. (though not all of it; see 'Along Came a Spider') Once Animated gets past that and into deeper/more fun stuff, we might be able to compare better.

I like the over all direction TFA is going.. I like having a diabolical *yet very imobile* megatron as he is. He atleast seems competent despite not having a body at the moment.. however, there isn't much different about TFA that we haven't seen already.. outside of having characters from newer franchises (like Black Aracnia and a movie inspired Megatron) and a more modern art style to go with it.. it's really just another G1 retelling more or less... which kind of has it's good points, and it's bad points..
I personally don't think it's going to reach quite the same level of depth that Beast Wars reached.. Beast Wars had an element of mystery to it that you just don't have in TFA.. we know all the decepticons are going to team up again at some point, Megatron is going to come back, and the autobots are gonna crap their pants. But in beastwars you had alien visits and golden disks.. things to keep you on your seat and wonder whats going to happen when the opening theme ends. Once the character development matured, you had a really great set of characters .. once they killed off the uninteresting ones.. or killed the interesting ones. Dinobot kind of works well in that sense.. So far, TFA hasn't left me with that same kind of feeling .. like who these aliens are.. what happened after the transwarp explosion.. how the hell they're gonna fix optimus prime's charred visage and the time stream. The only sour note on Beast Wars was that it ended when it was just about reaching it's top stride..
But, I'm open to be surprised.. there's gotta be a hook somewhere that reels you in on TFA. Maybe we haven't come to that point in the plotline yet.. or maybe they're trying to keep it simple. In all honesty, TFA doesn't need to kill a character .. or recite shakespear for that matter. As long as it's fun, I'll continue to watch. And not being made in japan is automatically a breathe of fresh air.

I agree with this sentiment 100%. I mean it was obvious from the beginning that they were on earth, but that didn't mean the intent wasn't in the right place. Thinking back, BW is very similar to "Lost" in the respect that the mystery kept unfolding. I'm not comparing the two in any other way such as writing or tone etc, but BW felt like it knew where it was going.

Something I really noticed after watching "Lost and Found" today (spoiler tag'd even though it's not really a spoiler):
In Beast Wars, there was NEVER this sense of "oh my god, the bad guys are here and we're going to get our asses kicked." I mean, you had Cheetor and Rattrap PWNing Predacons all over the place, despite the fact that they were supposed to be scientists. I really think Animated wins in the "who would really be kicking whose ass" department.

Is this a trick question or somethin?
I liked BWs best when the animation was crappy and it didn't "try" so hard to tie into the G1 continuity.
Animated is great because as with BWs before it became and obvious fanwank the characterizations are solid and the stories thus far have been really well scripted/executed.
Though Animated has plenty of G1 references throughout it doesn't make the same mistake of pulling the entire series into the past Transformers continuity with stupid time displacements and what not. I know it's only been 11 out of 52 eps but the writing, characterization is easily on par with that of Beastwars, and tons better than the Armadaverse. I'll always love other incarnations of the franchise be it BWs/A/E/C but the creators of animated have outdone them all.
The only TF show however that doesn't even rank close for me is G1. One episode and I've already lost interest. Any other incarnation I've been able to watch hours on end. TFA for me nearing 30 has been the most well rounded entertaining show since Teen Titans. Is it better than that, too early to tell but damn is it close.

Beast Wars. Overall I felt that BW was less "kiddie". Sure it had it's moments/episodes. But Animated relies a little too much on Sari as a plot device. Many episodes involve her and her key getting in to danger. Granted BW had Cheetor fill an identical role, but it was less gimmicky. I enjoy Animated, but BW had IMHO a better storyline.
