So I was thinking about what I would consider to be the best games ever, but not only that but the best games I never heard of when they came out (gunstar heroes for the sega genesis comes immediately to mind)

So perhaps it would be cool not only to mention the best games ever (which has probably been done here before but also to rank the best games that you think maybe not everyone played.

Gunstar Heroes Sega Genesis

I get the impression sometimes that not everyone played Blaster Master obsessively for a year like I did that game was killer!

I never played any Kirby games before I played the kirby stuff on smash brothers Melee ( I missed the whole N64 phenomenon until I got one for like $10 at a pawn shop) Kirby is really innovative and fun. I recently found it for the NES and me and my Kid love that game.

I also started going through my roms... <_< >_> I mean my cartridge collection <_< >_> and discovered that Adventure Island is actually a really phat game. I mean the character has this perpetual frown and looks a little like Corky from life goes on musicalnote.gif oblah dee oblah da hey heeeeey life goes on musicalnote.gif Seriously they're actually really well done.

I also played through Abadox and while it strikes me as a low budget knockoff of life force, if you use the cheat code its pretty fun to go through.

Yeah lots of interest here redface2tf.gif

Air fortress for the NES is pretty fricken cool

Solar Jetman has its merit as well.

GaiaWing, arcade; 19XX,arcade;metal slug (all of them), arcade 'n stuff; can't think of any others right now. I love top down shooters.
G.A.S.H.
Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Kid Klown, Super Putty, Clayfighter, hmm, what else did I have back then? Can't remember, still got most of them actually. Went home last week, got to play DKC2 again. Awesome game, I'm sure whether I like DKC2 or 3 better. 2s harder, so more of a challenge, while I liked the way 3 worked, and Kiddy was better then Diddy...

clay fighter ruled. period.

Yeah - that's one I don't have now icon_sad.gif

Earthworm Jim was another great game.

Oh boy... I've been trying to avoid commenting on this one for fear of getting carried away. If you're looking for real gems then look no further than the 16-bit era, which many consider the "golden age" of console gaming. The war between Nintendo and Sega produced so many great games I hardly know where to start. The best thing about them was that machines finally had the power to produce great soundtracks, extremely detailed sprites, and tons of colors, but not enough to go fully 3D.

The SNES in particular has a lot of great, little-known RPG's such as Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia from Enix, legendary Nintendo offerings like Super Metroid and Link to the Past, and Squaresoft's Final Fantasy II&III (or IV&VI), Secret of Mana, and my all-time favorite game, Chrono Trigger.

The Genesis had a lot of fun games too. Nothing I would put in the "best ever" category, but there were a lot of solid pre-sonic platformers and action titles that have since been overlooked. Even early games like Mickey Mouse and Ghostbusters, which one would expect to suck, were pretty good.

The NES is my all-time favorite, but I get the feeling that most of it's best titles are already well-known. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Contra, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Punch-Out, Adventure Island, Blaster Master, Castlevania, Megaman, etc. One I will recommend is the NES version of Maniac Mansion, which featured a lot of improvements over the PC version, but was harder to play without a mouse.

Finally, there are a lot of great PS1 games that can still be readily played due to PS2/3 back-compat. Everyone knows about FF7/8/9, but there were a lot of other interesting RPG's from Squaresoft and other companies, including Xenogears, Legend of Mana, Chrono Cross (one of the highest-rated games of all time), and the Lunar series, which were enhanced Sega CD ports. I'm also particularly fond of the Megaman Legends games, which had pretty decent graphics and controls for their time and featured VERY strong voice acting and an engaging storyline (which has yet to be resolved...)

I'd say Beyond Good & Evil for PS2, Xbox and GC/Wii went under the gaming radar and was such a great game IMHO.

NES: Mega Man 3

SNES: Axelay

Genesis: Sonic 2

TG16: Devil's Crush

PSX: Castlevania - Symphony of the Night

Dreamcast: Crazy Taxi

Haven't owned any of the more modern systems, so my list stops here.
Alana
Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters

Hands down. It's... my god, it's such an amazing game. It's a space opera-ish adventure/role-playing/exploration/2D space combat game, kinda, and the dialogue, omg lemme quote some out of context for you~

QUOTE
Let us unite and form an alliance!!
We will provide you with all of the crew, ships, and resources you desire.
We will give you.....wait!
I sense that you are offended by our crass material offer.
Yes, I am ashamed. Any war mongering species could offer this... we are Pkunk!...Children of the Stellar Breeze!
We shall give you what all others could not! The greatest of gifts!
We shall give you our love.
Ah, you are speechless. Do not talk now. I can feel the energy connecting us.
Let us part while the silence remains. Farewell...

PLAYER: Okay, so help me understand this. You consider yourselves Evil?

ILWRATH: Ha! Evil! Of Course We're Evil!
Dogar And Kazon Would Never Reward A Less-Than-Hideously Evil Species With Their Baleful Grace.
Why We Are The Very Definition Of Evil!
Everything About Us, Within And Without, Reeks Of Heinous Deeds, Deceit And Treachery!
Even Our House Pets Are Rather Evil.

PLAYER: But `evil' is defined as deviation from established values. If your entire society behaves evilly, then aren't you all, in fact, good?

ILWRATH: Hmmm... We ARE All Evil.
We All Behave In A Mutually Agreed-Upon Fashion Of Murder, Torture, Deceit And So Forth.
Our Uniform Acceptance Of This Heinous Credo Creates An Orderly And Cooperative Society
Which Hardly Seems Evil.
Evil Is Doing Things That Make Others Hurt Or Fear.
We ALL Do That, Of Course.
But Since We ALL Do Such Things, As Sanctioned By Our Culture,
It Would Be `Bad' To Do Otherwise.
Which Means... Er... Er...
Blasphemer! Do Not Play With Words! You Anger Both Dogar And Kazon! Now You Must Die!

QUOTE
Do you really believe Project Bluebook revealed EVERYTHING the Army Air Corps knew?
Do you know what REALLY happened at Roswell, New Mexico in the late 1940's?
Have you even heard about the Men in Black?
Do you have any friends who have `missing days'?
Do you sleep with your window unlocked?
Be seeing you...

Here, go play it for free and entirely legally, on Macs or Linux or Windows. It's fantastic, and only about ten hours long~
The Diesel
Metal Storm for the NES. You are a robot that looks a lot like a Macross Valkyrie. You get to reverse gravity and walk on the ceiling while fighting all sorts of things. That game ruled.

The graphics were awesome for the time.

For me, I tend to think "best games" are ones i've played that do something new. Not necessarily the best ones out there. I haven't played every game ever but here's a list and why I think they are good.

SNES - Cybernator
An absolutely stunning shooter/blow 'em up. Part guided shooter part platformer. Hard as heck too.

Genesis - Ranger X
Very much like Cybernator but this time you're transformable. I have yet to get past stage three.... but maybe I'm lazy.

Xbox - Psychonauts
Easily one of the best platformers I've ever played. A real pity it didn't sell well.

............... Obvious mentions:

Super Metroid
Castlevania SOTN
FF7
Chrono Trigger

................Other mentions:

The Lost Vikings
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Gryuss
Armored Core
Intelligent Qube
Descent
Alien Vs. Predator (only for the Atari Jaguar)
Syndacite Wars

All of the rest of the games I love are all pretty popular/new and I'm sure you've all heard of them so no need to make any mentions.

EDIT: HOLY FORMATTING BATMAN. forget it/cut videos
Galzamus
Genesis

Shining Force 1 - Played that thing so many times from start to finish. I dunno if it's really so much as it's "unknown" as it is old as crap and tends to be forgotten. There's been newer games, one I think for PS2, but it doesn't follow the spirit of the original at all.. more like Anime Fanwank with bad voice acting.. repeatitive bad voice acting. G4's XPlay review of it was pretty damn hilarious.

Herzog Zwei - Fun little tatical strategy game where you're this jetformer that pretty much serves as the players avatar. He's indestructible, to a degree.. there is no lives, and once his health is got he blows up and rebuilds at his home base. The objective is to actually attack the enemies main base, which has hit points.. and you can send armies of tanks, SAMs (which really knock the crap out of jetman), boats, motorcycles and soldiers. Wasn't the best game because of the small 25 unit count, and late in the game it really results in a lot of lag.

SNES - I don't think there's anything obscure I can mention here. Secret of Mana is about as obscure as I can recall that I used to play a lot (played it with my sisters constantly, gotta love the 3 player option) but even that has seen sequals and such.

PC

Starwars Galactic Battlegrounds - Fun little game .. kind of copies the old Age of Empires engine. Except your Wookies and Stormtroopers and stuff. The original game out when Episode 1 was released, and they made a Clone Wars expansion that had pretty cool seige weapons that blew the crap out of things. The only thing is that it's not so much a challenge for me anymore. Depending on the map, I've made a completely walled in fortress that the AI controlled armies will never breach.. I know that the AI targets first, and I know when the AI picks a "nation" to attack, they never change their stradgey. All AI units will attack that nation as if they planned it in a secret meeting. The AI also doesn't attack each other unless they decide they want to.. if you're in a 3 way battle, the AI will ignore the other AI nation and attack you first. It also gives up at a certain point if you blow up enough of their buildings. The workers just stand around waiting to be killed and they don't produce anymore units.. it's kind of disappointing. The AI also has this annoying habit of building tons and tons of carbon refineries for no real reason.. so late in the game, most of their area is a sea of these things that really don't serve a purpose. I never build Jedi's either.. as they tend to be like Age of Empires Priests and turn units.. thats about all they're good for. I'd rather shoot an enemy unit than convert them.. but thats just me. (unless it's a novelty .. I have a weird habit of collecting enemy workers)

Transport Tycoon - Before Rollercoaster Tycoon existed, there was this game.. where you basically control all forms of transportation between a bunch of cities.. sometimes speical requirements are needed.. sometimes not. You can compete against the computer too.. or you can turn them off. Kind of like a digital model railroad. The cities build themselves over time as well.
ULTRA MANGOS
just so you know tripredacus, diablo II`s music actually sounds oddly familiar to age of mythologys in the first act
Tripredacus
You have this backwards.

Age of Mythology release October 30, 2002
Diablo II release June 29, 2000

I listed it as 'music' because it wasn't revolutionary in gameplay or rpg elements. It was its own thing, something now really done (well) by anyone else. I've been playing it since Beta, and I can't really classify it. I love Matt Uelmen's music in it tho. I listen to those tracks more than I play the game nowadays.
