Don't you think it's wierd or ahkward that the Decepticons have dinosaur robots in Generation 1? I mean the Dinobots should be the only dinosaurs in the whole thing!

i think the term Dinocons would be more traditional (insecticons, combaticons, stunticons, predacons etc)

be fair, towards the end of the series i became fond of Kakuryu, (triceratops) i really felt for the guy, especially with Goryu beating him up all the time for his stupidity. Especially when he keeps saying he likes insects so the destrons try the cybertronian devouring ones on him.

In the cartoon, they didn't scan anything. They became what Wheeljack wanted them to. In the comic they scanned dinosaurs in the Savage Land but... that's Marvel fantasy land and just plain wrong to be in the TF continuity.

people say this, but never give a reason why. I think it's clerver enough. Plus cmon, we're talking about transforming dinosaurs here, there isn't much about em that isn't stupid.

In the end it looks like there were more Decepticon dinos in G1 than Autobot. So, uh, what have we learned?

I remember the dinobots starting out as mean, reasonably intelligent characters (grimlock especially).

Seems like Grimlock almost killed Prime when they were first introduced.

I don't remeber if they started using dinobots as comedic relief before the movie or not. Actually my only pre movie memory of them is Grimlock trying to kill Prime.

Okay, reason why: the idea that a group would, on Cybertron, simply be associated together with a meaningless name like 'Dynobots' is not just ridiculous, it's silly. 'Dynobots' does not mean anything. What even is a 'Dyno'? That they then arrive on Earth, scan some dinosaurs, and, as a pun, start calling themselves 'Dinobots' is even dafter.

I'd just like to also make a comment about people saying the idea of transforming robots is stupid, or ridiculous. It's not. The idea of machines coming to life has been with us since people started making machines. Uneducated people all over the world thought steamtrains were demonic monsters when they first appeared. I'd categorise the idea of alien visitors replicating our technology as a means of disguise fascinating or, at worst, frightening, not 'stupid'.

Then again, transforming dinosaurs is a bit surreal.

Well...a dyno, or dynomometer is the equipment used to measure horsepower and torque in a vehicle. There are chassis dynos which measure the power at the wheels, and engine dynos that measure the power at the flywheel. Sorry, had to be a spoil sport! Though, if you've ever seen one of these you'd know a transforming version of one of these is even more ridiculous than a tf'ing dinosaur.

There aren't many alt modes which are exclusive to any one faction. Autobots have jets (Powerglide, Jetfire, Aerialbots etc), Decepticons have cars (Battlechargers, Stunticons etc) and so forth.

As others have already mentioned, the origin of the Dinobots varied according to different canonical sources.

In the G1 comics, the Dinobots were just Autobots. The faction known as "Dinobots" was only formed after they came to Earth and was reformatted with dino modes to adapt to the Savage Land. Swoop transformed into a jet and was a member of the Autobot Elite Flying Corps - where his original name was Divebomb until he got pwned by a Decepticon who then stole his name (and later became a member of the Predacons), forcing the original Divebomb to change his name to Swoop - a name he carries with shame, swearing vengeance some day against the Predacon Divebomb where he hopes to defeat him in battle and claim his original name back.

In the G1 cartoon, the Dinobots were created on Earth and were given dino modes because... umm... it seemed like a neat idea? Oh yeah, they were also given simple brains ("That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard!").

In Dreamwave's The War Within series, they were called Dynobots on Cybertron and transformed into military like vehicles (WWI Swoop retained his jet mode from the G1 comics). The Dynobots spearheaded the Lightning Strike Coalition which also consisted of Kup, Ironhide, Inferno, Smokescreen and Wheeljack.

I don't know if anyone hit on this angle or not already, but if they didn't, UMM, WAHT'S THE BIG DEAL???? So wait, there should only be autobot dinosaurs? So there should be no decepticon sports cars or trator trailers, no autobot military vehicles, there were also MOSTERBOTS, and before that, Deceps had the market cornered on monsters...so uhh, no, I don't think it's awkward

I have to agree. It's almost like saying people of one background can't be in a certain job because of their background.


With that said, just because the Decepticons didn't have a character with a microscope for its alt mode doesn't mean they're stupid (the smartest Cybertronian was Shockwave, after all) and just because the Autobots didn't have a gorilla alt mode in its ranks doesn't mean they don't stink, or that their descendents not allowed to have a gorilla alt mode.

As I said before, I can't think of too many alt modes which are exclusive to any one faction. There have been good and evil Transformers for nearly all kinds of alt modes.

Evil Cars: Stunticson, Battlechargers etc
Heroic jets: Powerglide, Jetfire, Aerialbots etc
Evil jets: Decepticon jets, Decepticon Targetmasters etc.

Heroic primates: Optimus Primal, B'Boom, Apache, Optimus Minor, Autobot Pretenders (human shells) etc.
Evil primates: Apeface, Beastbox, Stranglehold, Pretender Starscream, Bludgeon (an undead primate, but a primate nonetheless!) etc.
Heroic helicopters: Whirl, Blades etc.

As for Heroic guns, Break and Stampy have gun modes. Yeah okay, that's a stretch - guns are pretty much an evil alt mode for Transformers. ;p

Another alignment-exclusive alt mode - rat. There are no evil rats. The only rat-moded Transformers are Rattrap and Packrat, both of which are Heroic.

Dinoforce was just the Decepticon Prentender Monsters with new pretender shells, so technically, they don't have anything to do with dinosaurs.

Except for their "new pretender shells" looking like dinosaurs...

Maybe we should just stick to what dinosaur transformers we most like.

I'll stick with the Dinobots.
