For me its mostly online, but I do hit these places from time to time:
Japantown Model Shop
Super7
Yes Anime
The shop in the J-Town mall
Jeffery's Toys
Cards & Comics
TRU - Geary
TRU - Colma
Toy Shop - Taraval
None of these is all that stocked. Sure would be nice to have something really focused on TF stuff.

Yeah, I'd go buy the imports at a local shop if there was one. I went to Japantown to try and pick up SuperLink Wing Saber but no one carried them. So I got mine from BigBadToyStore.
I tend to shop a lot online because I don't have as much time for the hunt as I used to. The comic book shops down here in the south bay stopped carrying transformers, so I tend to go to the Target in Sunnyvale, the TRU in Sunnyvale, and the Wal-Mart in Mountain View.

TRU
Forbidden Planet
A1 Comics
Woolworths
Toymaster
The last 2 aren't really favourite's but they're worth a look as they sometimes have things the others don't. Forbidden Planet gets a lot of Superlink and collection imports, while A1 is the only place I've managed to find any Universe.

I go to SF once in a while because i life about 40 minutes away (Near Hayward/Fremont/Newark). When I do go to SF, I stop by Jeffrey's. I hit the malls, all Targets and TRUs. I have mad love for the city of SF, though.

I'm in Fremont, so I typically hit...
Target and KB in the Newpark Mall
Toys R' Us across from said mall
Fremont HUB Target
Milpitas Wal*Mart
Union City Wal*Mart
Don't get out to the city much, but if there was a nice import shop that carried a lot of Japanese TFs, I would totally make it out there a few times a month.

Not many stores specializing in TFs, understable but all the same toys in general don't sell well here. Comics and anime dvds dominate. Btw, if youlike models I'd recommend Hero's CLub on Clement street near 10th Ave.

my friend just opened his shop that also functions as a video store, but their main focus is selling toys [transformers one of their main focuses] they also sell other collectible toys and hard to find figures... he's in the philippines for vacation and nabbing stuff from japan for his shop so it should be running in september when he gets back... so whenever you're in union city check out this place
from oakland/sanmateo bridge go 880 south exit alvarado and make a right.
from san jose take 880 north, exit alvarado and make a left
continue on alvrado till it becomes smith... on the 3 way stop you'll see the anime shop/video store on your right
you cant miss the shop cuz you'll see posters of transformers in the window
enjoy guys!

Oh and I just remembered a pretty decent store for TFs in Burlingame. Its called Hobby Unlimited. They even have a decent Web site: at
http://www.hobbyunlimited.com. Sorry, the G-Taste was not my doing.
Check them out for all kinds of Japanese stuff. Lots of model kits, candy toys and a good selection of TFs, even BTs and Collectors Reissues. The prices are not great but where can you go to pick up JP stuff in town?

I live about three hours away in Fresno, but the SF area is somewhere I usually go, most of my fathers side of the family lives up there. If I can get into the city next time I am definatly going to check some of these places out.

I like going to Kimono My House in Emeryville. I haven't been in awhile, so it took me a minute to remember it.
http://www.kimonomyhousetoys.com/shop.cgi They have *tons* of anime and robots, new and vintage. Even if you don't buy anything, it's worth paying 'em a visit just to gawk at the store.
Within a month, I usually hit:
Target El Cerrito
Target Pinole (Near Hilltop Mall)
TRU Emeryville
TRU Pinole (Near Hilltop, same parking lot as Target.)
K-Mart Pinole
San Leandro Wal*Mart
The El Cerrito Target and Emeryville TRU are the closest to home.

Update, Newtype anime had some great anime toys and mecha models and toys. Sadly after over a decade of service they are closed down now.
Jeffrey's is ok, but they are getting less and less TF stock nowadays. Possibly b/c it just isn't moving as well, so Mark reduces how much he orders now.
