On a side note, watching McCain's speech last night was like pulling out my little friends, then my eyebrows, and then my eyelashes.

I saw maybe five seconds of McCain's speech.... no thx

scratchchinhmm.gif McCain / Obama debate = the new Nixon / Kennedy debate?
SkyClonus
Seriously. This presidential race could be the first that's seriously impacted by HDTV. Maybe that's the tech junkie in me, but it's a technology that just compounds the age difference between the two. Honestly, I think that age/generation will be the biggest factor going into November.

lol

I think it's true though. And honestly it's nice to see that the two candidates actually do have significant differences... my hope (sure to be dashed) is that we can actually have a debate on the issues as a result, and not play political grab-ass until November.
Stormtrooper53
*would love it if we could have REAL debates.*

I'm tired of
"Mr. Kerry, your response..."

"Thank you Jim, in your question you recently just asked my opponent, he gave an answer that was very ambiguous and not very straightforward. Your question is an interesting question, one that I have though long and hard about. It's a question that I am frequently asked when I'm on the campaign trail by hardworking, honest Americans who are concerned about the direction in which our country is headed. I think if you asked my opponent this question, he would probably give you the same answer he just gave, and this indicates that he does not have a full understanding of the issue at hand, just as he has done throughout this administration. I, however..."

"Time's up! Mr. Bush, your response..."

Real debates would be a nice change. I just hope it doesn't immediately degenerate into a discussion about abortion and gay marriage moral blah blah blah...

Yeah cause those issues affect my daily life
Lord Madhammer
I don't get the sense that McCain is all fired up about gay marriage. They may make abortion an issue, but who knows. I think he's much more likely to run on national security and experience, and make Obama out to be the callow youth etc.

I agrees wit you.
Hot Rod
yeah that's pretty much how his speech went last night.
Lord Madhammer
I heard that McCain said "change" 33 times in his speech. Reminds me of 2004 when the Democrats were arguing their case on the Republicans' terms. And of course they lost in 2004.

I didn't think about that, but it would stand to make a great deal of sense. I'll be interested to see how that develops.

It's definitely not the TV/radio gap that Kennedy and Nixon had, but shouldn't be discounted. Just like Obama's web presence.

from Politico:

QUOTE
Obama aide Bill Burton, a campaign source says, went downstairs in their Chicago offices just now to collect a hand-delivered copy of John McCain's invitation to Goldwater-Kennedy-style debates with Obama.

"You know, you could have just emailed this," a somewhat puzzled Burton told the middle-aged messenger.

The generation gap seems to be playing out at a lot of levels here, and come to think of it, it's striking that the McCain debate proposal includes nothing that couldn't have been done in the Goldwater days, and no nod to the existence of the Internet.
SkyClonus
For some reason, I'm reminded of the Axis And Allies thread in INH...
Nomolos
hopefully the electorates won't be influenced by how a candidate looks on tv.
I also think its important that the invitation was hand delivered, considering the nature of the debates. it makes more sense that its hand delivered ala distinguished opponent/rival. as compared to the way Hill went about dealing with Obama.

BOLD - rofl.gif
In this country? Shyeah, right.

That's exactly what I was thinking. A hand delivered note is way more prestigious than a friggin e-mail. Also, a hand-delivered note cannot be readily forwarded to multiple news services by some punk-ass campaign volunteer.

Lord Madhammer
Methinks you guys are missing the point.
SkyClonus
I think McCain just got frustrated after trying all night to stuff the invitation into one of the internet tubes and just gave up.
Stormtrooper53
"Dammit! This thing won't fit! HEY YOU! C'mere! Take this over to the Obama place and tell him to stick it up his @ss! And get off my fcuking lawn, you little twerp!"

Am I the only that, every time I hear the name John McCain, I get a mental image of him running out his front door in white boxers, black socks and a wife beater, waving around a water hose?

and I didn't miss the point of the hand mail/email slight on Mccain. I just think he was trying to be more dignified than using such an impersonal method. we could say noone in mccains camp knows how to use email but that's ridiculous. we could also say noone in Obamas camp can read a paper letter cuz its not in text format. equally ridiculous. wat?

Gee, he's not one for brevity, is he? But I guess that's the point of blogs or something. I think he could have summed most of that up in this-

QUOTE
I didn't want a female senator out of the race. I didn't want a universal health-care advocate out of the race. I wanted the weirdly Republican-lite, crazy rules-changing, stereotype-reinforcing panderer that had somehow burrowed into Hillary Clinton's skull out of the race. [...] In short, Senator Clinton had my respect, based on her accomplishments and independent of her gender -- then she spent it, tossed it away in fistfuls, in trade for dirty borrowed blades with which to cut her way to the nomination. [...] I would suggest that the least we can do, for our country, is to stop being so goddam precious. What we can sacrifice right now is our need for validation, our narcissm, our cultural addiction to weaving ourselves and our emotional journeys into some grand historical high-drama (and I mean that in the narrative sense, not in the perjorative sense) epic.

Although this was my favorite part

If a three-legged dog were to somehow be nominated for the Democratic candidacy and chose as his running mate a gopher with a penchant for monocles and Victoriana, I would wear my "Tripod/Lord Whiskerkins '08" button with pride and pull the lever with cheerful alacrity.

That's rather way too long. I agree with his initial sentiment, disagree with his reaction and interpretation of "Melissa's" statements, and generally agree with his final sentiment and words. I would also say the 27% he speaks of is more like 95% from both.

I tried reading all that but if after a page of reading they still haven't hinted at a point other than 26% of each side is crazy you lose me.

I'm sure at some point it got interesting I just don't have that kind of time.

Really, if he wanted to be dignified, he would've hand-delivered it to Obama himself.

Wow, check this out: (from Politico.com)

QUOTE
On Day 2 as nominee, Senator Obama wants to show that he will change the nation’s politics. As the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, he WILL ANNOUNCE TODAY that the Democratic National Committee will no longer accept contributions from federal lobbyists or PACs -- consistent with the policy of his campaign. His declaration makes it clear that he will try to make the influence of Washington insiders one of his key arguments against Senator McCain.

Wow.

And people say he's running on a platform of "vague change." Seems like he's got a pretty solid plan.

I woke to an Obama speech on NPR on my alarm and me and my wife both sat there and just listened till it was over. It was like political sunrise man.
