I've come to realize that the Mario Bros I grew up with - two Italian plumbers who were sucked down a magical drainpipe to a subterranean fantasy world and battled the evil King Koopa to rescue a hapless Princess Toadstool - is no longer canonical. It seems like ever since Yoshi's Island (they were BORN in the Mushroom Kingdom now?) the story's been retconned into something completely different, which names and affiliations changing along the way.

I'm curious to see what others make of this trend. Do you prefer the oldschool characters or their current incarnations?

I thought Mario started out battling giant gorrillas on the top of skyscrapers... Does that mean there are now three chronologys?

Omg, I thought I was the only guy bothered by this. If the Mario Bros. were born in the Mushroom world, how'd they get Italian accents? I think the problem is that in Japan, he didn't have our Plumber from Brooklyn story the whole time.

Like there's ANY canon to Mario.

Besides, if Mario and Luigi got sucked into another world you would think that they would try to find their way back to their own world.

And I personally despise the baby Mario's to the point that I regularly forget that they exist at all.

That's a relief, I was afraid I was the only person Outback-retentive enough to even notice the changes. The Peach/Toadstool Koopa/Bowser stuff doesn't bother me that much, since they're just standardizing names across territories, but I really dislike some of the changes, especially the baby Mario/Luigi bits. I don't honestly know what the story was in Japan, I just know the story I grew up watching in the cartoons and (to a lesser extent) movie, and somewhere along the line that story apparently got chucked.

Edit: Outback? WTF?

...but a-n-a-l retentive isn't a "swear" word.

well actually, Bowser's name has always been that. The show only mentioned it once. Also the Koopa kids were all given different names on the show. Hip & Hop = Iggy & Lemmy, Cheatsy = Larry, Bigmouth = Morton Koopa Jr, Cutie pie = Wendy O, Kookie= Ludwig Von Koopa and Bully = Roy. I wonder why the Koopa kids were brought back in Mario & Luigi but then they are all replaced by Bowser Jr?

This is what Mario (and Peach) should be --> Super Adult Mario World
