This is going to be delicious. I'd heard it was pretty bizarre, but I hadn't seen anything yet.

Entertainment Tonight showed the trailer for it earlier tonight. Looks interesting.

I'll definitely be in line--mainly for the camp factor, but I have a feeling this is going to just be balls-out fun.

Also, it'd be a blast if the movie had the bad lipsynch as well.

It appears (not surprisingly) the Wachoski Brothers and Tim Burton are of the same mind...this looks basically like Speed Racer in the universe of Burton's Willy Wonka.

Interesting.

For the most part I'm seeing it just another live action attempt at making a cartoon.

The few snippets of racing I did catch look more like Hotweels accelararacers than anything.

The cast however does look pretty good.

Overall looks like a lot of fun.

I agree with Hobbes-timus Prime - visually this trailer doesn't look well done. The special effects look really cheap, like a well done fan film, but disappointing for a proper movie.

It's not like the Transformers teasers and trailers when I looked at the CG and went, "Wow!"

You are aware that this isn't going for a realistic look, right?

I'm pretty sure the W. Bros. aren't going for photo-realism. It's Speed Racer.

I don't see why that should prohibit them from making a live action movie photo-realistic. Let's face it, Transformers is a very inherently cartoonish concept yet they managed to make that look reasonably photo-realistic.

when I heard of this movie at the beginung of this year I was realy hoping the W.bros wouldn't pull this Blot & make the movie verbatem from the toon.
& I was REALY looking forward to an up dated modern version of the Mach5. oh well, at least its good I'm finding out now rather than in the theators.

Makes you appreciate how the live action Transformers movie wasn't verbatim to the toon and comics.

I saw pics of the G1 coloured Voyager movie Prime and IMO it looks Blot (IMO all the G1 coloured movieformers look crap - Jazz looks okay but is hell overpriced, Rescue Ratchet looks okay in vehicle mode but terrible in robot mode). People complain about the chopper flames (I've never minded them) but after seeing pics of G1 Voyager moofie Prime I'm thankful for the flames.

I've said this elsewhere and I'll say it again here. IT'S MEANT TO LOOK LIKE A CARTOON YOU EMO'S!!!! Once again, the nay-sayers come out, just like with Transformers. BLAH BLAH BLAH it looks retarded, blah blah. Yea it's different, SO WHAT?? So was TF!!! Give it a freakin' chance before you get all whiny.

about 20 years ago there was this VHS tape going around called "Faces of Death". in it was a scene of a monkey (hehehe chim chim), locked in the center of a circular table w/only its head exposed.
then a group of filthy rich social-lites (with way too much time & money on their hands), all took small hammers & smashed the monkey'skull open. they then took long fancy forks & ate the monkey's brains.
I said all that to say this, I don't always have to "TRY" something to know its total & un-redeemable Blot! If u disagree then I suggest u take a hammer, knife & fork to the speed racer cast party & ask for some "alone time" w/ chim chim LOL

If they wanted to make it look cartoony... umm... make it an animated movie? Even CG animated (as with the last TMNT movie)? The thing with live action is that you're photographing live actors who look horrifically out of place in blatantly non-photorealistic backgrounds. Some people may like this kind of contrast, others may not. From what I've seen, I can't say I'm a huge fan of it, but I might change my mind about it later... I don't know.

The difficulty with CG effects has been trying to make it look more and more photorealistic and I personally don't like it when it starts looking too cartoonish.

Thankfully they fixed this in the DVD.

But hey... they do use this intentionally cartoonish style of CG w/ live actors in a lot of music videos... so who knows. Ultimately I'm reserving final judgement until I see it - ultimately we will all either:
a. Like the story and effects
b. Like the story but not the effects
c. Like the effects but not the story

At the end of the day, it's the story that really matters. As the Matrix sequels taught us, fancy effects means nothing if your story is crap.

So a friend posted the trailer on her LJ and I finally watched it.

This looks like the Spy Kids movies. Completely over-the-top, but extremely fun, as long as you realize it's basically a Saturday-morning cartoon with live-action actors.

I guess it kinda reminds me of the live action Garfield? or Fat Albert? Though, it is Wachowski bros, an' ye pretty much can't ask for better for some kinda anime-related adaptation..

It looks like Speed Racer will struggle to make 20 million by the end of the weekend, coming in third after Iron Man and an Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy. And overseas it's not doing any better. No. 6 in the UK, no. 9 in Germany.

I'm not surprised. Why, you ask?

Not because of the movie quality. it could be the best damn movie ever.

It's the name. Speed racer is pretty much the standard for shitty animated cartoons in the US. It's remembered as being brain dead and overly cheesy. No matter how good the film is, it has that bias against it.
