Full Version: The Top Ten Transformers of 2007!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah, it's time for my my favorite list of the year. Actually, It's a little early this year. Not only was I in great anticipation to compile it but as far as I suspect, no new Transformers will be released before January or at least I won't be able to find them before then.

This was actually one of the harder lists of the past couple years. This year we saw the end of Alternators, some real odd ball products, and the movie toys. So, I had a tough time organizing the top ten but I feel satisfied that I got it right.

So, without further adieu:

10. Revoltech Convoy - This is probably the coolest non-transforming Transformers ever and it wasn't made by Takara or/Hasbro. This little gem by Kaiyodo is as articulated as Convoy can get and I love that the design closely resembles Pat Lee's Transformers style.

9. Sports Label Nike Convoy - This one is on the list not because it necessarily has the coolest robot or alt mode but because it had the most unique one. I think it's important to see other ways Transformers can be done. Now, I can't say I a m a huge gym shoe fan but the overall presentation of the little shoe in the shoe box packaging made me smile.

8. Alternators Ravage - You better believe if it is an Alternator and it came out this year (only 2 1/2) it is on this list. Alternators still put all other Transformers to shame with the realistic cars and fine details. Ravage was definitely unique for this line as the Jaguar car turned into a robotic Jaguar. I can't say aesthetically this is my favorite Alternator but I love the variety it gives to the collection.

7. BT-18 E-Hobby Mirage - Trust me, I really wanted a regular die-cast Binaltech version of the regular Mirage and it most likely it would have been number one. Nevertheless, I like the idea behind this E-Hobby limited edition. A transparent Mirage does not only make sense for the character but looks damn cool! Again, this adds a nice variety to my BT/Alt collection and at least shows that there is still an interest in the line. Maybe 2008 will bring me my die-cast version of Mirage.

6. Movie Voyager Class Starscream - I will not lie, like many others, I dislike the overall aesthetic of the movie character designs. Not because they don't look like what I grew up with, they just simply aren't that unique and appealing to look at. However, that wasn't going to stop me from checking out the toys. The Voyager Starscream is not only an incredibly fun toy but looks very close to its source material. After transforming him about a dozen times, I was able to separate the Starscream I grew up with and this new bug like creature. Ultimately, it is the fun factor that got him on this list.

5. US Masterpiece Starscream - I confess, this Wal-Mart exclusive is far better than the original Japanese MP Starscream and it's not because I'm a G1 purist cause I'm not but the red, white & blue colors and more durable plastic makes for an all around better toy. I look forward to the Japanese version of this US paint job. I assume they will eliminate some of the awful overdone smoke marks and lack of little detailed paint applications that were missing. Maybe he'll be on next years list.

4. Alternators Rumble - Can I love this line anymore? There were many refreshing factors to Alternators Rumble: He was designed to be a Decepticon first, he was a basic car (Honda Civic) and he had chrome pulverizers for hands. This feature was actually a deterrent to many fans. Many transfans would have preferred regular hands. However, again, I think it added a nice distinction for the Alternators collection.

3. MP-05 Megatron - I admit it, I am not that much of a Megatron fan and never really have been (unless you include Beast Wars Megatron). I thought the original toy was frumpy and did not convey the leader of an evil organization and ever since, few versions have convinced me otherwise. However, the complexity of the Masterpiece Megatron shows what he should have looked like had the technology been available. He is large and much more menacing. What kept him from the number one spot though is his over-complex transformation and lack of weight. I would have preferred a little more die-cast metal. Otherwise, this is the best Megatron to date and probably the best we will ever see. Oh, and he makes a great counterpart for the Masterpiece Optimus Prime.

2. MP Skywarp - I may get a lot of criticism for this one because this is generally a repaint of the Starscream Masterpiece. However, Skywarp has always been the only seeker jet I cared for and there are some definite improvements from the first MP Starscream mold including: plastic quality & different Facial expressions. The black, purple & silver just go together so well that it reminded me of being a child and laying my eyes on this awesome robot and jet for the first time.

1. Movie Leader Class Optimus Prime - When I first saw pictures of this toy, I was less then enthused. I didn't think it looked like it does in the movie, it looked too thick and overall didn't seem worth the money. Then, I bought it and discovered the most fun I had with a Transformer in ages. Yes, he doesn't look exactly like the movie graphics but I'm not even sure that is necessarily a bad thing. This toy is so entertaining. The transformation is smooth, the light up features and sounds work great and he includes many little details. This toy wins best Transformer of the year because this is the kind of toy that if I was an eight year old boy, I would never forget it and would most likely try to hunt it down on Ebay twelve years later after my mom sold it at a garage sale when I was in high school. Make sense?

Honorable Mentions: As I said, this was a tough list to make and some other Transformers that almost made the list are: Music Player Soundwave, Leader Class Movie Brawl, Real Gear Spy Shot, Deluxe Movie 2009 Camaro Bumblebee & Real Gear Meantime.

i don't know how you can produce a top 10 list and not include something from the classics line...
DarkNarcoleptic
Aren't Starscream and Skywarp really just the same toy? And Rumble is nice and all, but I wouldn't consider it top-ten material.
Drewbie
Did Classics Ramjet come out this year or in 06? He's on my list. Also most of the movie decepticons, RH, and HBS-02 Black Convoy.

Actually, I think that list is also all the TFs I bought this year...

Classics were released in 2006. Accept the Botcon set but for me the price was sooo high, it knocked it off the list.
Blitz
i would not have movie screamer and alt ravage in their at all horrid looking things to me

10 Deluxe Movie concept Bumblebee
9 music label sound wave (the best idea for a G1 based Sound wave toy so far)
8 MP Megatron
7 leader class movie optimus prime
6 Leader class movie Brawl
5 BT 18 Mirage
4 real gear meantime (if it was a little bigger to fit round my wrist and had a working clock face i would have forked out way more)
3 Encore G1 optimus prime (ok not really a new toy but its a cheap G1 prime so for that its in my top 10)
2 Movie Voyager Iron hide
1 Movie leader Night beat Optimus Prime (hes been out in the UK for ages before any one trys to correct me)....hmmm same mould in twice

no order to that list really but retrospectively i don't think the movie stuff was as good as classics or cybertron don't get me wrong i like them but so many just didn't have that wow factor infact its only a few of the real gears deluxes and leaders that i fell were really worth it
Goktimus Prime
10. Soundwave - Encore; much better than the crappy TRU reissue
09. Masterpiece Starscream - improvement over last year's MP Starscream, although I still prefer the look of Takara MPSS for jet mode
08. Masterpiece Megatron - a really nice effort
07. Rodimus - Alternator
06. Liger (Mirage) - Binaltech; after so many clear variants we finally get one for Mirage! It really pissed me off when they made chase SCF Lio Kaiser pewter instead of clear! GGRRR!
05. Classics Jetfire - a nice Skyfire/Jetfire hybrid homage... designed by an Aussie too!
04. Ironhide - movie voyager
03. Autobot Ratchet - movie voyager
02. Bumblebee - movie concept; best movie Bumblebee toy to date
01. Leader Class Optimus Prime - one of the definitively best Optimus Prime figures made since G2 Laser Prime.

QUOTE (primetoystore)
Alternators still put all other Transformers to shame with the realistic cars and fine details.

Except Binaltech. icon_wink.gif Sadly that line is now defunct and the Alternators Ravage mould was never realised as a BT. I personally found Alternators Ravage to be really disappointing by ALT/BT standards. The car mode lacks the pop open bonnet w/ engine inside and there's no working steering column in the front wheels. I also dislike how the front knees bend backwards which is stupid (in quadrapeds only the hind knees are pointing backward - the fore knees point forward). It was a nice concept but a bit lacking in some areas in execution.

Skywarp is a repaint and made of better quality plastic.
Soundwinder
I thought US Screamer was made of the same plastic as Skywarp. And I gotta say, Screamer's face is infinitely better than Skywarp's. They messed up badly on his snarl.

I do agree Binaltech blows Alts away and I think there is still a chance we may see the remainder of the Alts BT style. And I think if we do, you will appreciate those molds much more.

Oh, and personally, I prefer Alts to Binaltechs. I have a Binaltech Battle Ravage that I simply refuse to transform anymore due to the risk of paint chipping. I'm very careful with it, but the Binaltechs are just too fragile for my tastes.
Goktimus Prime
Battle Ravage's paint is quite durable.
Smokescreen's paint had some problem with chipping, but Takara improved the paints with subsequent Binaltechs making them more resistant to chipping. The only part of the BT Corvettes I find which is prone to chipping are the tabs between the bonnet panel halves, but it's not big deal for me - and I find that the tabs on Ravage don't chip as much as on Tracks.
ROSEDOGGYDOG
1. WM Starscream
2. Alpha Trion
3. Leader Class Brawl
4. 2007 Ironhide (not encore)
5. MP Megs
6. Concept Bumblebee

8. G1 Titanium Ultra Magnus
9. WWi Titanium Megs
10. WWi Titanium Fallen

No paticular order (please note that in the Uk we were only able to get the second wave of the classics on store shelves this year around June so imo they count as this year for uk fans)

Movie Longarm: i have had the most fun with this toy more than any other from the movie line. his legs are difficult to reallign for vehicle mode bu with the amount of possibillity he has and play factor he is perhaps my favourite this year.

Proto Prime: Proto Prime gets alot of stick for his indecipherable alt mode but the robot mode is pure love and made me look forward to the proper line, even if they didn't live up to his articulation and abillity to get in almost any pose you ask.

Classics Mirage: a great guy, up there as one of the greatest tf toys and even features a nod towards the original's fatal breaking point at the waist. one of the best TF in a long time.

Movie Leader Prime: Every year there seems to be a general call of "OMG! this prime is better than MP-1!" although i don'tbelieve that can besaid of this mold he is an essential purchase for his almost alt mode and almost passable as movie accuracy in Robot mode. Although i have problems with his feet (He's more stable with them untransformed, weak ankles). If only hasbro hadn't been stingy with the paint apps first time round and released the "Premium" versions in the first place he would be at the top of my list.

Alt Ravage : Although he has alot of problems, he isa good tf to have. ( my problem is with him having a uk plate andthen not having a yellow plate on the back and white plate on the front and having the drivingside on the left rather than right.) My alt ravage is very lucky, he was a birthday present from my Ex Girlfriend and whereas everything from that relationship gives me a little cringe when i come near Ravage does not give methat feeling of unease. He may not be accurate to the forms in either mode and hiskibble may be attrocious but he has given us a unique transformation which gives alot of characterand a suprising amount can be done with him pose wise.

Concept Bumblebee: from the designer who brought us Classics Mirage and Classics Bumblebee came the hottest and most sought after transformer to come out in the year. this mold was fantastic if not without it's problems. He has shown us that it is possible to get something closely resembling movie accuracy in a small toy. (much better on all accounts than ultimate bumblebee).

Classics Grimlock: the first attempt at putting the name to a new dino mold for a good couple of years at least and it is a great update for the character, a new approach towards his transformation and a nod to his pretender shell make a good homage without limiting the toy to it's potential.

Alt Rodimus: haven't had him yet, he's waiting for christmas and even then i might not be allowed to open him, but by god, first experience of this mold gives a very good impression and does not look garish as might be expected.

I know this is a really a top 8 list but i can't think i would nominate any others i got for the top 10 of this year.
Maximo Prime
Hmmm... Nike Convoy, ML Soundwave, MP Megatron, Deluxe Concept Camaro Bumblebee, High Score 100 (man i love Real Gears)... 6ti G1 Magnus, Movie Leader Prime, Movie Dropkick, and...(wish i had my list on me!) ML Rumble/Frenzy!! smiletf.gif
Metrotitan
Oh Boy!

I love these Lists!! By the way I am counting Classics, cause I didn't get them till April of this year...

10. Titanium War Within Megatron...because he looks badass...
9. Classics Jetfire...great update, and makes him his own character (rather than a Valkyrie)
8. 2007 Camero Movie Bumblebee...a mini Alternator.
7. Revoltech Prime/Ultra Magnus/Megatron...MEGA SCF done right. Stoked for Screamer/Rodimus!
6. Robot Heroes (Entire G1 Line)...spent so many hours hunting these down in Japanese stores...
5. Classics Optimus Prime...love the dual hand blasters and "slim build" aesthetic.
4. Binaltech Clear Mirage...if only I could get one (sob!)
3. Masterpiece USA Edition Starscream...still need this badboy...
2.Movie Leader Prime..the fig that changed my mind about Movie figs (well...Autobots anyway!)

1. MASTERPIECE MEGATRON...simply a dream that many people thought would never come true. Easily the most complicated Transformation ever, nice silver paint apps, and a great compliment to the best TF ever made: MP 01. Not without flaws (chicken legs, hard to stand up, impossible to pose) but the mere fact he exists makes him number one for me this year!

I'm pretty sure Revoltech Prime/Magnus/Classics Prime was/were released in '06. Anyway, my top 10 would probably be something like this...

10. Titanium Ultra Magnus - First ULTRA Magnus in years
9. Alt Rumble/Ravage - The last Alternators ever icon_sad.gif
8. Takara BW10th figs - MUCH better than Hasbro's
7. Music Label Soundwave - Is pretty cool too
6. Revoltech Megatron - See above
5. Enccore G1 - Finally, reissues I can afford!
4. SDCC Alt Rodimus - Hard to get, but totally worth it
3. MP Skywarp -
2. USA Starscream - A masterpiece in every sense of the word
1. MASTERPIECE MEGATRON (obviously!)
ReverendNash
In no particular order, I think these were my favs this time around:

1. MP-05 Megtaron - what need be said about this one?
2. Nike Free 7.0 Convoy/Megatron - once I got these in hand, I really love the gimmicky-ness of them
3. ML Soundwave - working Soundwave...
4. Ti G1 Ultra Magnus - no separate trailer, Blot...actually comes with trailer
5. Movie Leader Class Prime - very well executed
6. MP-06 Skywarp - I'm a sucker for masterpieces, and this one just looked great
7. WalMart MP Starscream - see MP-06
8. Alpha Trion - about time they made this guy, and the mold they used worked really well in my opinion
9. Movie Deluxe Concept Bumblebee - it's just a great toy all around
10. G1 Robot Heroes/Softimus Prime/Optimash Prime - the movie brought us all kinds of neat little gimmick crap that's just too much fun to have

it seems like there were figures not released until january like ramjet or cliffjumper....
Galzamus
Well.. I don't think I got many Transformers this year to fill this category other than movie guys...

1 - 2008 Concept Bumblebee .. It doesn't even need to be said how awesome thing guy actually is.
2 - Movie Ironhide .. it's a close second. Movie Ironhide is awesome.
3 - Dropkick .. Great robot, great truck design, crappy weapon. 2/3 ain't bad.
4 - Longarm .. I don't really like that his weapon doesn't come off unless you unscrew it. Other than that, sweetness.
5 - Movie Wreckage .. nothing here to really hate.. although the colors are a little silly.
6 - Movie Ratchet .. A bit biased here.. mine came with parts loose in the box, and they don't stay attached well to this day. Decent either way.
7 - Movie Leader Optimus Prime .. Size really isn't everything. I don't really care too much for that giant block with the lever you pull his head down with like he's a ninja turtle. Truck mode looks good. All things considered, better representation of the character in the movie in my opinion. Voyager looks silly with that backpack.
8 - Movie Leader Megatron .. much of the same reasons as Optimus.. he comes in behind only because his vehicle mode.
9 - Movie Deluxe Brawl .. A decent guy, I enjoyed him.. he would of been getter with shoulders that snap into place and some back support however.
10 - Movie Blackout .. He's a lil short in voyager terms.. but the helicopter mode is pretty good.
Dinobot Leader
10. Deluxe DropKick
9. Deluxe Arcee
8. Voyager Ironhide
7. Robovision Optimus Prime
6. Deluxe Swindle
5. Voyager Thundercracker
4. Voyager Starscream
3. Deluxe Landmine (He's availible, so techically, he's 2007)
2. Deluxe Concept Camaro Bumblebee
1. Leader Brawl.

They are in order. I was taken in by the movie line. They rock hard core.

Most of them. Too bad LEgends, FAB, and other expansions to the line suck so bad.
JustLOKIPLVY
Didn't buy a whole lot this year.

Tries to think back to everything.

I guess the movie line is about all I have to choose from

10. Voyager Ratchet
09. Deluxe Bonecrusher
08. Deluxe Arcee
07. Voyager Starscream
06. Deluxe Longarm
05. Cybertron heros. (line)
04. Deluxe Dropkick
03. Voyager Ironhide
02. Concept Bumblebee Deluxe
01. Leader Class movie Prime (well duh)
Agent TMan
Out of the limited amount of toys I bought this Year, that came out this year, I'll list my favs (not in any order)

Alt Ravage, M Longarm, M concept BB, M Leader Prime, M deluxe Arcee. Now since that aint 10 figs, I'll name the toys I want bad but am broke. MP Megatron, MP Skywarp, ML Blue Soundwave, US MP Starscream and Revoltech Megatron
squawkbot
yeah, when are those movie-repaint night stick primes gonna come out in the US? i wanted one of those. (nvr mind, i just read hasbro.com, whoohoo 2008!)

...also, doesnt it seem kinda funny that the only "black" transformer, Jazz, ended up dying in the film. the main story is about robots and the black guy still dies. just wondering. reinforce the stereotype.
swiftlikessharpthings
10. Movie Deluxe Battle Damage Jazz: Hated the character & the first version of the toy, but his bazooka rocks.

9. Movie Voyager Ratchet, Metallic Apps: Looks better than the flat 'tennis ball' color of the first release and has a few bits that transform better. My only two nits? He needs a buzzsaw and a machine gun.

8. Movie Deluxe Arcee: the only movie toy I bought that doesn't appear in the movie. Sticks very close to the concept art they were going to use.

7. Movie Deluxe Bumblebee: A lot of people had problems with the automorph, but mine works great. I like him, foibles aside.

6. Tie- Alternators Ravage/Rumble: A great way to end the Alt. line by giving us two Decepticons that are direct homages to their G1 selves and not Autobot repaints.

5. Movie Voyager Ironhide: His cannons are awesome, he's well-articulated and he looks like he does in the movie. I just wish his chest would lock down...

4. Movie Deluxe Concept Bumblebee: The movie made Bumblebee cool to me. Only reason he doesn't rank higher is because of that damn floppy waist.

3. Movie Leader Brawl: A solid Transformer all around. Makes me wish I hadn't spent the ten bucks on his deluxe counterpart because this guy's superior in every way. His transformation and gimmicks are top-notch. Too bad Movie Megs wasn't as cool.

2. MP-05 Megatron: I never thought I would have this toy to go along with my MP Prime, but here he is. Though the mold has a plethora of problems, he looks great on the shelf and gets tons of points from me for the sheer genius of the engineering, overall look, and choice of accessories. But those problems also keep him from being No. 1, as that spot goes to...

1. Movie Leader Optimus Prime: THE coolest Transformer this year. The engineering, the poseability, the way the kibble is designed to move out of the way... it's pure coolness. I just wish he had his sword, and though I'm hesitant to drop the forty bucks for the new version coming next year, I might just talk myself into it because this is that great of a mold.

Honorable mentions: Movie Voyager Starscream (Too Waspinator for my liking and too much vehicle mode kibble), Wal-Mart MP Screamer (Still like MP-03 better), Movie Deluxe Bonecrusher (cool but I want him BIGGER!)

The Movie stuff really won me over if you can't tell...

I would like to put the Robot Replicas on a top ten list, but the paint apps really hosed them. My RR Prime looks really cool... now, after I spent a long time with him and some much-needed silver paint.

attention Hasbro: flat gray =/= chrome kthx

and because I'm just that way, my top ten list would be:

10. Robot Heroes Movie Ironhide

9. Robot Heroes Ultra Magnus

8. Robot Heroes Hot Rod ("Rodimus" teh ghey)

7. Robot Heroes Movie Barricade

6. Robot Heroes Skywarp

5. Robot Heroes Supermetal Finish Megatron

4. Robot Heroes Shrapnel ("Insecticon" also teh ghey)

3. Robot Heroes Grimlock

2. Robot Heroes Supermetal Finish Optimus Prime

1. Robot Heroes Shockwave

Have you actually been able to personally check one out? I was very leery at first, but once it showed up, I couldn't help but fall in love with them, enough so to even go buy the third one, and still hope for the red "Starscream" version. I would also love it if they would do a remold and release some right shoes to compliment the left shoes that I already have. They may be 100% gimmick, but it's fun none-the-less.

It is a damn shoe. A transforming shoe. I don't have to check one out to know that it sucks because it's alt-mode is a shoe. That's retarded.

I still love my shoes, and you can't take that away from me! thumbsup1.gif
Broken Phantom
10/ Movie Dropkick.(As said before Crap weapon)
9/Wallmart M.P.Starscream.
8/Movie Wreckage.
7/Movie Landmine.(Fantastic figure,bit overhyped)
6/Movie Longarm.(Amazing after a gun mod.)
5/Movie Ratchet (Yep needed a gun & buzsaw)
4/M.P.Skywarp (So much better quality than greenscream)
3/Movie Leader Brawl (mmmm..Chunky.)
2/Movie Leader Prime.(Just awsome)
1/Movie Leader Nightwatch Prime.(Man i love this colour scheme)
Doctor Stupid
I know the Classics were released late 2006, but I didn't get them in my area until January of 2007.

Anyway, 10 = Not the best of the best, 1 = best of the best:

10. 2007 Movie Leader Class Optimus Prime - this is a good toy (but not the best, not by a long shot) and I agree it's one of the best Optimus Prime toys since G2 Laser Optimus Prime.
9. 2007 Movie Wreckage - I know it was never in the movie but I think this toy is very underrated.
8. Classics Megatron - good attempt to bring the gun mode back to the Decepticon leader.
7. Classics Bumblebee - a mini-Alternator on its own.
6. Classics Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime - finally, a Hot Rod with articulation!
5. Classics Starscream/Ramjet - damn good toys.
4. MP3 Soundwave - I've always wanted a functional G1 Soundwave, and this is the closest we'll ever have to actually having one.
3. Alternators Rodimus - not Alt Mirage, though. I like the extra features added to this awesome mold, i.e. the adjustable visor.
2. MP-03/Wal-Mart Starscream/MP-06 - all the same toys to me but the paint job. This is an excellent mold representing a classic character.
1. MP-05 - Masterpiece Megatron - great engineering, great aesthetics, great likeness to the G1 version, light up fusion cannon, and best of all, it transforms into a BIG FREAKIN' GUN!!!! Hands down, the best Transformer for 2007.
