Full Version: So why Detroit?
TFormers Community > Transformers > Transformers General Discussion > Transformers "Animated" Discussion

According to this article, Detroit is the must dangerous city in America, so why is Animated taking place there? Are they actually planning on putting more mature elements in the cartoon like gangs and murders, or are they just really freaking delusional?
Mom
Coincidence. Considering the show has been in development and according to rumors is in it's second season of dev. Meanwhile, this report just came out.

But Detroit has been a very violent city for years. Didn't anyone do any research?

Exactly.

Also, Animated takes place in the future...there's no telling the state of the city in this fictional future timeline.

Probably not....It's just a cartoon. And even if they did....it's still just a toon. Real life and Toon worlds only mix and match in two movies.

But isn't that kind of dangerous? Some little kid might watch the cartoon and want to visit Detroit because it's portrayed so ideally, and then get shot in the face the moment they step off the bus.

Any kid that's getting to take a bus to Detroit alone has bigger issues than Hasbro's research.

Why not? You got a problem with the north central midwest? Huh? Do you think it's crap because it's not set on one of the coasts? post-21-1056164451.gif

I'm sorry but

Uh, maybe because Detroit is the automobile capitol of the USA? Wasn't that the location in the TF movie as well?.
Soundwinder
I thought it was, too, for some reason. Then I found out it was set in Tranquility.

... yeah.

Kind of like the people who think a kids' cartoon should be set in motherf***in' Detroit.

Because the damn Red Wings secretly control the world, that's why.

Maybe...but since it's a kids cartoon in a fictious future about robots that turn into cars, I think it's fine to ignore the real-world setting here.
Aquarion
The problem is, Detroit is such a hellhole that it's kind of hard to ignore it.
Soundwinder
... it really isn't that bad. This has to be a joke topic.

Claiming this to be true would mean that Spider-Man is the most insideous of all propaganda, as it convinces children that the streets of New York are fine because Superheroes will save them all.
Bestimus Mucho
Hmmm... Robot Crime fighters in future detroit? This plot sounds familiar...

qft

thats the first thing that went through my mind when i heard the setting for animated. hasbro's got a partnership with auto manufacturers now and the sales of american made cares are dwindling so it makes perfect sense to me, and even that might just be adding context where there is none. i mean what better place than detroit for a setting of a show about robots that turn into cars?
Tripredacus
Scotty Bowman better make a cameo.

Well, kind of. If the premise is that the robotics industry revitalized Detroit, well I'll have a hard time believing it since I doubt that the available workforce has the intelligence required for building robots. You honestly expect a gang member to just quit committing crimes and go build robots?

it's not like the gang member builds the entire robot... he stand on an assembly line and titens the same 3 bolts on each bot that passes over and over all day.

Detroit isn't quite as bad as a Blothole everyone thinks it is. I mean, have you been down Jefferson, in Foxtown, near the Casinos. Is pretty. Just ignore Corktown, Old Redford, Brightmoor, Delray........well, anything that isn't considered Downtown. And yes, parts of the final battle were filmed in Detroit, including the Old Detroit Train Depot and Fort Street. Plus, we're responsible for Tom Selleck, dammit!

[sarcasm] Oh yes, kiddies are going to watch TF:A, google Detroit and see that it's such a violent city. In turn, they're gonna think that because their mechanized heroes are thrust into a violent city, it must be OK for cities to be violent. This in turn will give us yet another generation of people who just don't give a s*** about violence. Gotta love a desensitized nation [\sarcasm]

Futhermore, if you followed up on that "report", you'll see that most agencies are blasting the report as nothing more than a money grab by the company that publishes it. Even the FBI is miffed on how their data was manipulated. I'm sure Detroit was set as a locale long before this "report" came out.

Seriously man, if you need to think up crackpot conspiracies, SmokingGun.com is your ticket.

Agent 539
I have yet to hear of a little kid getting shot in the face immediately after stepping off a bus like the gun is saying,

"Timmy. Yeah you. Standing behind grandma. C'mon Timmy. You know you're gonna get shot in the face as soon as you step off the bus. Look, I don't care don't care if you wanted to come to Detroit because you saw some cars turn into robots, it's gotta happen because this is the only city in America that is violent beyond imagination. Today Timmy."

Just because some BS violence report named Detroit crime city when every other city has it's crime is crazy. To knock a show because it's set in a major city that happened to produce cars, music acts and Robocop, is crazy as well.

Sound ridiculous to me. I used to ride the RTD back in the 80's when jacking for Jordans and whatnot was popular. For those that don't know, the RTD was the bus transit system for Los Angeles before it was turned into the Metro. Often stood for Rough, Tough and Dangerous.
Bestimus Mucho
Data: Hey, any of you guys ever hear of Detroit?
Mikey: No.
Mouth: Soitenly. That's where Motown started. It's also got the highest murder rate in the country.

I love the Goonies

NICKLOCK
Or maybe the setting of a dangerous city is the perfect place for heroic Autobots to come and save the day?

The show is gonna have its share of human "super" villains doing evil things and committing crimes and stuff. All these things were considered when the show was assembled.

I lived in D-Town for about 5 years. & yes it can be a Blot hole but so can NJ (where I curently reside). Detriot has its up scale negborhood like Groves Point where million dollar homes line the streets.also I'm sure this has some thing to do with GM. this has the stink of marketing ploy all over it!matter of fact I have this best friend who is this totaly huge M&M fan & saw 8mile like 50 times!I hated to bust his bubble, but I had to tell him that 8mile is not this gang infested dangerious place where underworld rappers come from.its a 4 lane high way that leads to a suburban shopping mall.

Motown...need I say more.

Oh wait. Plenty of people have beaten me to everything I've wanted to say. I visit Detroit every year to see family. Its really not that bad...certain parts. Downtown isn't great.
Archamax
I think it's in Detroit because at least once in the series, Megatron's going to take over a car manufacturing plant and make it create an army of Decepticon clones.
