Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good media player thats cheap or free. I love Windows Media Player 10 but was forced to upgrade to 11 when I purchased my new computer.

I dont need anything super fancy but would like it to: make playlists, play random/shuffled, search and organize the library

A long time ago i used a program called "musicmatch" is that one still good?

On a related note - does anyone have any recommendations for a program that will record streaming video/audio from the internet?

Thanks all!

Winamp would suffice. If you use it only for MP3 files, and do not expect to make playlists with videofiles, iTunes would do as well. It is what I use, and prefer over Winamp.

And Real Download does what the name implies.

Thanks FatherTime, :-)
I use iTunes as well, for the store ... but for some reason the format of the player doesnt appeal to me much.

WINAMP, WINAMP, WINAMP...IT REALLY WHIPS THE LLAMAS ASS!

Oh and get the skin MMD3, best skin ever! I ended up liking W.A. so much I ended up paying for the full verision.

Supported files (from their site):
AAC it mod nst stm
AIF itz MP1 NSV stz
AIFF KAR MP2 OGG ult
amf M2V MP3 okt flac
VLB mp3 m3u m3u8 pls
ASF M4A MP4 ptm WAV
AU mdz MPEG RMI WMA
AVI MID MPG s3m WMV
CDA MIDI mtm s3z xm
far MIZ NSA SND xmz
669 VOC b4s asx wpl

There is also a new beta version out 5.50, 5.35 is the stable version.

Since you have an ipod you can sync with that vs. itunes.

For visualizations, I like the MilkDrop 1.04e plug-in. It plays in your desktop backgroup (full screen) but can be a ram hog. I have another plug-in that acts like EA:Need for Speed Underground music title.

Winamp does indeed whip the llama's ass.

Winamp is perfect for audio. I still have yet to find a video player I like, so I still use WMP for videos.
DarkNarcoleptic
I use Media Player Classic for videos/movies. Clean, and I have codecs for it so you can watch movies/AVIs without trouble.

Winamp seems like the clear winner here...
Anyone have any suggestions on my second question?
I'm not even sure if i am allowed to ask that question on the board and stuff so if you have to pm thats cool too

Thanks for all your help!

*Runs off to find Winamp*

Winamp streams videos and audio from the net (really anything you can think of-yes they have a parental control too). Before Winamp, I was in love with Musicmatch. I had the full verision (paid for) then they updated and kicked me to the curb. Then they got bought out by Yahoo Music and it turned lame!MM was great at converting MP3's to WAV and back again, then when it went yahoo they took it out. Yahoo looked too cluttered from what I can remember anyways. As for the video playback I use Winamp for that too.

If it hasn't been mentioned before, Winamp will do direct playback for audio and video off of your portable device.

I'm not concerned about playing streaming video
but recording, downloading, saving etc ect. it.

I think that recording it off of my video card it probably the way to go since most streams are hidden behind shielded links and stuff and cant be "downloaded" perse.

Anyone have any suggestions on my second question?

I've used SDP in the past, but I'm not sure how good it is versus anything else.

I've been using Realplayer for the last couple months and it's not bad. It's no Musicmatch, but hey, what is?

By the way, MusicMatch apparently merged with Yahoo and became the Yahoo Music player. Yeah, that's right, it kinda sucks now.
Thad_theImpaler
Media Player 11 isn't all that bad... I still use the series 9 skin with it.

but my favorite player was Sonique, but they're no longer updating it and it still has some bugs. 1.96 was the last version I believe.

As for streaming audio, I use Audacity. Don't have anything for streaming audio though.

Winamp for all things music

VLC + Media Player Classic for video, if you've got those programs you should be able to play ANY type of media thrown your way, they're all free too (you can reg winamp for a bunch of extra crap, but it doesn't really matter)
