I overhead some IT guys talking yesterday, and one of them said soemthign about "entertainment", non-business-related websites being blocked. Well, I surf TFans at work, too much I'll admit, and sure as hell, they blocked it. Now the days are a little more sucky.
Anyone else hit TFans at work, I know you do. Catch any grief? Get it blocked on ya?
*hopes the IT Militia doesn't find out about Seibertron.com...*
yeah....I posts from home...

Could use a Proxy server to bypass the restriction.
Hell, using the direct IP address might work too.
Course it might get your ass fired so..

Working at work? The way I see it, I get paid to post here. I've also quit my job and am starting at a new one soon, so who'd fire me anymore for this?

so how do proxy servers work? are they that.... incriminating?
they block nearly everything where i work.... if they ever blocked my tf sites i'd literally quit... there just isn't enough work to be done where i work and i'm just trying to stay awake and sharp rather than sitting at my desk playing tic tac toe against myself...

can anyone tell me mre about how these work?
does using them leave you open to hackers/viruses?
how easy is it for network admins to see where you've been?
what are the advantages and pitfalls?

Basically it just bumps your browser through a separate Server, neatly bypassing any IP blocks that may have been set up, and giving you anonymity.
It is technically possible for the owner of a proxy to use any cookies and such, but as long as you aren't internet banking through it or anything I don't see much issue.

I have the opposite problem, every other toy related boards has been blocked except TFans, for now. As a compromise against unauthorised use of office PC's we were provided with some "casual use" PC's to surf with during breaks, It doesn't help though as it carries more restrictions against the PC's we use for work, even against some of the proxies available. I'm getting sick and tiered of seeing the "If you have a legitimate business use" message on a PC designed for CASUAL browsing...
