So I plan to do the White Optimus Prime looking Ultra Magnus. I just can't find a figure of him. So what I was wondering, is what should I use as the base figure. Like, a specific one. Any help appreciated.

Here's a link to a picture of what I'm talking about.

If you're just starting out repainting, you probably want to use a simple and easy to find figure.

For this particular repaint, may I suggest "Bendy" Optimus Prime. It's a deluxe (vs Leader) class Optimus Prime, usually found for about $10 MOSC. Not only is he really easy to take apart and put back together, he's pretty easy to find. If you screw up, just go get another.

He was released near the end of the Cybertron Line, as well as (obviously) the Armada line.

Well, not first time painting figures/models at all. Just Transformers. I've done quite a lot of painting and modeling work on Warhammer 40k minis. I don't know if this changes anything, but if another Optimus would be available to my skill level, that'd be great. Thanks none the less though.

Trust me, take his advice. I have been painting pewter gaming figures since 1986 or so, and painting TF's is totally different. The problem isn't the level of detail, it's the assembly and disassembly of figures, plus making sure not to get to much paint coated up on areas that have articulation, like balljoints.

Hmm, that makes sense. I guess it's just something I'll have to do and get my hands dirty with. Thanks for the advice guys. I may post pics when I finish it.

How about this fellow?

I know it isn't the one you suggested, but I wasn't really worried about the Alt. Mode and I like the pose he is in.

Also, they have the actual figure of Ultra Magnus in the same pose, but he is sold out. icon_sad.gif

Just check out ebay for tf lots. And practice on some small/cheap ones. Just to get the hang of it. As it's been said, there are a lot of joints, pins, and friction when it comes to TFs.

That link is for the Revoltech line and they are non-transformable, highly posable action figures.
