I understand that those Saleen Mustangs are police-modded and all that goodness -- but my question is, why would a police department bother using cars that are rather expensive as their patrol vehicles? I mean we all know 'stangs ain't cheap, so why bother when most departments use four-door sedans (which when you think about it is more practical)?
This reminds me of G1 Red alert, in that a fire chief would in no way be able to afford a frickin' Italian hot rod.

It's not out of the question to see a Saleen Mustang police car. D.A.R.E. police cars are often not standard sedans, but flashier cars. Google some pics and you'll see what I mean. Here's a real Mustang GT police car:

Many states use cars such as this for undercover. You know, the guys that bust you for speading and the car looks absolutley normal on the outside? one look on the inside however reveals all the trappings of a police car. The City of Denver a few years back was using Camaros.
In terms of price, I really don't think it's all that more expensive. Those four dorr Sedans 'Enforcers' Are tricked out with all kinds of stuff that's not standard on retail car. Many of these options are already included in cars like Camaros and Mustangs (Engine, suspension.....)

Using a regular Mustang isn't unreasonable, it isn't uncommon to see them used as "pursuit" cars by State/Highway Patrol - the fleet price on them is probably around $16k.
However, using a Saleen is completely ridculous - the S281 is $70k.

Those looks so good

My local PD in Mississippi is all Ford so the best I can hope for is a slow and heavy Crown Vic when I finally get sworn in. Our old cars are dark blue but the newest are black. Eventually they are going to black cars with white doors... kinda' like Barricade

Over here in NYC it all depends. Highway patrol officers have magnums now. This one time i was at a stop light and theres this red mustang cobra reving its engine at me. So i revved back and took off on the green. Mustang puts on police lights and pulls me over...

I saw a (1999-2004) black one Tuesday in the Wal-Mart parking lot. I had to do the "let's make sure this is a real Saleen and not a bunch of stickers, ground effects, and badges" check and it had everything.

Saleens are the real deal. Especially the S7. But I can live with the S281 if it was handed to me, you know.
I found it pretty amusing to see Bumblebee without any brake calipers throughout the movie.

In some states they use Chargers and Magnums, so look out bad guys, as for Mustangs here in New Mexico a few depts have GT's.

here in pburg they use the new chargers, they do that in huntington as well. in the hamlin / west hamlin area be on the look out for an unmarked solid black charger... it blends in with traffic rather decently but every time you see one you have that automatic impulse of wanting to hit your brakes. oh yea, i'm in WV.

camaro's and i just found this sneaky bastard...
a freakin hayabusa! my guess is that these special vehicles keep onlookers thinking that they can go on breaking the law until they get pulled over by a vehicle they never recognized.

Yes, four door sedans are more practical. California has been known to use a few Camaro's to catch speeders.
People in Cali drive fast as hell and some of these morons have the urge to run from the law. They think this is Dukes of Hazard.
