The trailer this thread links to is the old trailer that's been out for months. The Comic-Con preview is totally new and made me say OMG a lot and you should watch it.

The second one is a lot more indicative of the general direction & tone of the book/movie... these aren't children's books, despite the 12-year-old protagonist, and I had been concerned that the movie might have been Disneyfied a bit.

There is an interesting section on the website, that allows one to find his or her own Daemon. I found mine:
<object width="450" height="400"><param name="movie" value="http://goldencompassmovie.com/goldenCompass_blog.swf?id=215166"></param><embed src="http://goldencompassmovie.com/goldenCompass_blog.swf?id=215166" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" menu="false" width="450" height="400"></embed></object>
EDIT: Yes, I am aware that this code does not work at all. It seems I cannot get it to work properly.

I still don't get why they can't call it by it's proper name...

Because it is an American movie. The novel was released in America as "The Golden Compass", and that has become it's most widely-known name. In the States, that is. And whatever goes on in the States must go for all the rest of the world as well, shouldn't it?

Well it is an American production, so fair enough.
Maybe they can call it "Northern Lights" in the UK.

Weird, for some reason I'm not seeing the HTML option...

And they're not calling it Northen Lights in the UK

Bloody Americanisation... Next you'll want me to spell humour without the u. And that's too far *grabs Unicron* "Stay back evil Americans, stay back!"

The point is, like LM said, there is no option to turn HTML on. It's rather hard to to so without it.

What? Where's it gone...

I suppose the option has to be set per forum, and in this forum, it has been set off. In other words, it is up to the administration to correct this.
If they can be bothered to do so.
EDIT: Anyhow, in regards to the original topic: I hadn't heard of this yet, neither the movie, nor of the book itself. Luckily, I found the book, and its sequels, within my e-book library, so as soon as I find the time, I will start on it. The steampunk like atmosphere of this movie, comparable with the kind Jules Verne and such wrote in, has a tremendous appeal to me. Therefore, I will await this movie with great anticipation.

Well it's not as steampunkish as you might think... though the books will be VERY much up your alley, regardless.

Oh, I have seen the main site, which actually explains a great deal of the background of the world Lyra lives in, so I know magic plays quite a part in it. But to me, magic and technology are not necessarily opposites. After all, 'technology', in those early stories by Verne and the such, was treated as a kind of magic. In any case, the point is rather moot, since I do not wish to know anything beforehand, for any piece of information is already a spoiler, in my opinion (like the fact that Lyra apparently goes to other universa, which would be a great spoiler for the first book).

It's not a magical world at all, actually... the author has just taken the idea of parallel universes to a level not usually explored in fiction. In these books it goes beyond the mundane "would people drive in cars or carriages" and explores the nature of humanity itself, and how that might be different (at a fundamental level) in a parallel universe. But even so, that is not the "point" of the books.

Well, supposably, they're removing the reliogious stuff O_o

Yeah, I'm not sure how to take that. Either they really are, or they're just trying to avoid a backlash by saying that the Magisterium is really about authoritarianism and control etc. Which is definitely true, but it does skirt the issue a bit, doesn't it... That's the only thing I wonder about. Not that I expect to see it laid out in detail prior to seeing the film, since I can't really see a movie released at Christmas doing very well when one of its main themes is "God is evil".
