Dattebayo Staff Arrested at Otakon [UPDATED 7/27]2007/07/22

Baltimore, MD USA
Sat Jul 21, 2007 11:10PM EDT

Update: July 26, 2007 - Late this afternoon, following the earlier searches of several staff members' homes, the state police arrived at the homes of the remaining members who had been arrested in Baltimore this last weekend. However, when they arrived at the home of one of the staff members they were surprised to find that the member had removed all the hard drives from his computer and they now lay in pieces in a garbage bag. Frustrated officers then began to yell at that staff member and accused him of destroying evidence. When the staff member met their response with silence they decided to take him into custody. Family members looked on in shock as they tasered this individual repeatedly despite him not fighting back. Suddenly, the staff member began to convulse on the floor. Doctors would later say that the individual had suffered an epileptic seizure, possibly resulting from the repeated tasering. Officers claim they then mistook these convulsions for an attempt at escape and one of the officers fired his firearm, injuring the individual. The injured staff member, in handcuffs, was later transported to a local hospital where he is now in critical condition in the ICU. The member's identity is not being revealed, on the request of his family. The staff member's lawyer has already been contacted regarding this incident. More details are sure to follow, and we will attempt to keep this story updated as details are forthcoming.

Update: July 27, 2007 - This morning at 02:43, Dattebayo staff member ImpSyn, also known as David Pryor, age 29, was pronounced dead. His death comes following a gunshot injury inflicted by a state police officer during the execution of a search and seizure warrant on his home yesterday afternoon. David owned and operated a small website design company out of his home. He leaves a wife and two children, ages 5 and 3 respectively. ImpSyn recently joined our staff when we were recruiting for an opening in the finish editor position. Despite only having worked on a few episodes of our popular releases, he was eager to meet us and join in on the panel at Otakon this year. His family initially requested that his identity not be given on this website, however in light of recent events they have reversed that decision. Currently his funeral arrangements are in planning. David's lawyer has been updated regarding this issue and has assured us that appropriate legal action will be taken, however at this time additional details cannot be released.

"We thought the convulses were threatening" (which is basically what the cop's saying)

How Powerglideing retarded.
autobotmaintenance
Yes that's utterly shocking and disgusting. Those policemen are complete idiots who made up for their frustration by brutalizing the guy and finally shot at him. I hope they get years.
Haggisjin
I don't see how this could be justified in the follow up investigation.

"So... you started tasering the guy for no reason and then shot him in the leg when he had a convulsion? Okay...."

We recruit the WRONG people to be Cops.
Buddykiller
it's bad enough that they're bullying a fan-sub group, but this is just unexcusible and appauling. i've personally submitted the story to all the local news station and the AP.

here's to hoping these bastards get what they deserve!
MikePrime
That's just terrible.

I seriously doubt the iron maiden is being considered, but one can always hope.

That's what happen when you recruit blue-collar types or liberal arts graduates for your constabulary. The power trip gets to their heads.

UPDATE

there has been a sentence posted on thier wiki claiming this is a "joke"

When you fill the books with bullBlot, anti-constitutional zero-tolerance laws that do more harm than good, it tends to discourage well-meaning people from enlisting on the force, leaving only the thugs that enlist just for the power trip.

Show us the proof, a link/artical something please!

If this was a joke, I'd seriously think someone'd ought to report them to Viz/FUNimation. See how funny it is when they get caught for fansubbing licensed titles.

That's probably why the cops were harassing them in the first place.

the story came from the groups homepage which is linked in the original article, however, everybody keeps pointing to the acronym at the bottom of the article, yhbt. it was hidden on the group's page which leads people to assume it was a joke, ALSO, there have been many many folks who attended otakon and said they heard NOTHING of the bust. it's also worth mentioning that NOBODY has said that they saw/heard of the bust. not to mention there hasn't been anything from local MD news about the bust, which one would believe there would be given the highly controversial status of the situation.

i'm going to join their irc channel to ask, i'll probably get banned, meh. if you wanna call and harass them, you can reach db staff @ 1-360-812-2421 (note to mods, this phone number is posted on their website and available to the public).

You should be able to tell right away when their news is fake, they almost always contain "YHBT" (You Have Been Trolled) in them. They get a kick out of reactions like those here, that's why they do it, and they know they can get away with it because people continue to come to them for fansubs. Wish I had seen this post sooner to save you guys some grief.

At first I though, this was awful, but when I saw it was dattebayo I knew it was fake. They run this kind of BS once in a while.
Asthaloth
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't fansubbing legal under some technicality or another?

Any idea if this is actually a fake or not?

yea it's fake, it was a Powerglideing troll thumbsdown.gif

fansubbing is 100% illegal.

most companies allow them to do what they do so long as it's for distribution of anime which is unlicensed and thus unavailable in their area, however, they hate it when you fansub licensed stuff, but havn't went so far as to press charges against any group, which is why the whole db thing was a shock (at first). there have been C&D letters sent out though, but most groups stop subbing a series whenever it's announced, and most fan subbing torrent trackers and irc channels remove any licensed material. the same is true for manga and scanlation.

thats just legality though, fansubbing serves as a way for anime die-hards to watch what they feel to be the superior delivery of the show. it's also a way to protest the ludicrous cost of anime dvds.
