I just got back from the dentist and he told me nows a good time to get them removed, and I've heard horror stories about them being removed rumblecry.gif
am I in for some pain or is it all a myth?
Haggisjin
I had mine forcibly chiseled from my jaw because they were growing sideways, and that hurt more than being hollowed out and used as a prophylactic by some jail-cell husband named Francine.

But I'm sure you'll be fine.

Been there done that.

Should be fine unless they have to go in & cut em out.

I had all four pulled out shortly after highschool. Though they give you enough T3s to not care either way you'll be down for at least a day & not in a good way. After that you should be fine.

Be thankful this is only wisdom teeth. I've already had a root canal & several teeth yanked. thumbsdown.gif

I got to keep my wisdoms when I had 4 bicuspids removed instead when I had braces when I was younger. I used to think it was a pretty good trade until I required molar root canals in a couple of them. Before this, the pain in my jaw was so excruciating I even blacked out, yet could still feel the pain until I regained consciousness.

I also recall that some older teachers I had in high school who kept their wisdom teeth into their 40s or 50s until they finally needed them removed. They said there is no pain quite like it. So I'd say if the dentist thinks it's a good time to have them removed, listen to him.

I had to get all four of mine cut out. They were bony impacted and growing sideways or some Blot. Afterward I got dry sockets where the teeth used to be, which was incredibly excrutiating. They kept having to go and put medicated gauze in the sockets because they wouldn't heal. I remember going caving a few days later with my cheeks all swollen and it sucked, sucked, sucked. I'm sure you'll be fine though grimlocklaugh.gif

i just recently had two of my pulled and it wasn't that bad. the surgeon will give you the option of local anesthetic or being put out, i went with local anesthetic. i was in a ton of pain about 15 minutes after the procedure, and i had an hours drive home, note that i could only drive myself home because i chose to do local anesthetic.

they gave me a prescription for percocette, but i coudln't get it filled right away as i was in too much pain to wait the hour and a half that i would have taken rite aid to fill it so i went home and went to bed while my sis dropped off my prescription (she had other stuff to do too). as soon as i got the percs i was fine. i still had a slight pain, but nothing major. keep in mind that i had two wisdoms and a moller pulled from the left side and a wisdom from the right side.

so all in all, like i said, it's not all that bad. you get over it in not too long, just make sure you get your pain meds filled asap.

my wife's getting ready to get hers cut out, she can't have them pulled as they're impacted.

If it's a pull, I'd probably recommend getting the general anaesthetic unless you enjoy watching your dentist pull and sweat while jerking your head around to get the bastards out.

Of course, you might not wake up. grimlocklaugh.gif

Better sooner than later. My mom has no feeling in the left side of her face because the teeth roots grew around the nerves because she waited too long to have them removed.

I had all 4 removed at once just to get it over and done with (only 1 needed it). I must have been lucky because I felt no pain at all during the healing process, all without medication.

Oh, and request getting knocked out. You're gonna need a ride home, but it's best to remove consciousness for the extraction process. I remember actually waking up and continuing to count backwards from 7 (I fell asleep at 8 from 10).

Look on the bright side of all this though.. You're 3 meals a day will consist of Soft Serve for a week!!!

My want to get them removed keeps getting lessened, but at least I know its better to do it now than later. grr.gif

Get er done early. Got one of mine yanked out a couple of months ago. I remember the gauze and drinking my own blood for 10 days. couldn't chew right for weaks and numbing pain when drinking something hot or cold for a month. I still need to get the other 3 out. *groans*

The surgery is never good but it's definitely not always as bad as some of these horror stories. I got all 4 of mine pulled at once, and had the doctor knock me out, it was all over before I even knew it. Yeah the first day or 2 was pretty bad with bleeding, but as long as you wet the gauze before you put it in the back of your mouth there shouldn't be too much of a problem. Plus my doc gave me vicodin and thats some good stuff. When I was on it I felt no pain, and one morning I took 2 of them a little too close together time wise, felt likeI had a good little buzz going on while I worked! beerchug1.gif

So don't worry about it, get it done, enjoy your drugs and milk shakes and be glad you don't have to do it again!

local anesthetic =/= getting knocked out >_>

i'm a fat ass and all their chairs are dinky sooooo i kinda didn't have a choice. it wasn't that bad though, the worst part was when one of the teeth didn't wanna come out so he had to break it. it didn't hurt, but just the sound was enough to make me flinch and cringe. i still cringe when i think about that... other than that it wasn't any different than any other extractions aside from the stitches.

as for eating, i ate soft stuff for two weeks then started working on harder and harder stuff. after the 2 weeks i never had a problem with the right side on my mouth regaurdless of what it was, but the left side.... eh i still have problems eating tacos, potato chips, and stuff like that due to all the pointy stuff.

Getting teeth pulled isn't necessarily painful. My bicuspids removal was by local anesthesia and wasn't painful, just weird feeling. Course those are much closer to the front and thus more accessible than wisdom teeth.

You should think of this as avoiding the pain and agony that you're likely to suffer if you have to have them removed much later..

I just find it awful funny that the Yanks go through all this unnecessary agony and criticise British Dentistry. Just cause they want teeth that look like production line "specials" I prefer natural teeth which look beautiful in their imperfect perfection.

I've had a few bicuspids removed, but they were the milk ones. The sound it makes when they try to take them off gets me all flinchy.
so lets see, even if I take get them removed, I'm still gonna be feeling pain for quite a while? I feel like if I were going to surgery for the first time. optimuslaugh2.gif (which I haven't gone to either BTW)

What the hell is wrong with your teeth?
siburke939
I've had all 4 out on separate occasions & 3 came out fine. The injection wasn't nice (never is) but no big deal.

I'll save you the story of the difficult one though...

Stop being a cry-baby. I got my Wisdom teeth pulled out and I didn't make a thread about it! Mainly because I was taking too many pain-killers to stand, but still the point still holds.

Geez, that sucks. I hope it doesn't hurt too much. I think it's painful after the operation but not during because they knock you out good.

Ever had a molar pulled WITHOUT painkillers?
siburke939
I've had 3 removed (& 24 stitches in my lips/gum) without painkillers.

The difficult wisdom tooth was still worse.

Kicked out by 3 guys.

At least I had mine kicked clean out, I suppose. My Dad has scars on his top lip & nose where his got kicked up through his gums by some doormen.
