Trench, what measurement did you use to come up with Voyager Prime's scale of 1/38? I think I came up with 1/42 for him, but I remember him being a tough one to get a good measurement on.
I used the width of the truck. The numbers I found on the internet indicated a Peterbilt 379 is supposed to be 96 inches wide - I then divided 96 by the 2.5 inches I measured for the toy to get 1:38. Another common truck width is 102 inches, which may be the number you used - this would give a scale of 1:41, which may be how you calculated it. However, I happen to have a nice 1/43 scale model of a Mercedes race truck (of which the real truck is about 100" wide) that is quite a bit narrower than Voyager Prime, so I think the 1:38 number is correct.
However, the real problem with calculating scales for these guys is that they are toys and not scale models, so the various dimensions can vary quite a bit. Optimus is one of the worst offenders, since the length of both the Voyager and the Leader aren't quite in proportion to that of the real truck, so you can't look at length or wheelbase measurement (which would be difficult anyway, since those dimensions can vary quite a bit - although, my guess would be that the truck they used for the movie had a 280 in wheelbase). Of the remaining Autobot's, Rachet's also varies quite a bit, his wheelbase is 1:32 of an H2, while his width is 1:28 (the only two measurements I felt comfortable comparing) - and '76 Bumblebee is probalby the best, his length (1:36), wheelbase (1:35) and width (1:35), are within the boundries of error. The Decepticon's indivdual dimensions can vary even more - likely the cars have to stay close because if they were off by too much it would be more obvious (since most people aren't used to looking at military hardware).
