Okay, the last book is coming out in like 5 days. So this thread is for all things Harry Potter where we don't have to worry about spoilers.... but if anyone posts spoilers from the new book, I'll
tear your balls off...
Spoilers from the new movie can be posted here too.

The cool thing about books is that there aren't assmunchy spoiler fiends trolling the interwebs a year in advance telling everyone what happens.
But once the book is released... well, all I can say is, if you don't know by now that Somebody kills Somebody Else then you haven't been online anywhere for the past couple of years. I guarantee that there are going to be people who will buy the book at midnight on the 21st, skip to the end, and post OMG ENDING all over the place. Because they're douchebags.

BTW I'm not looking forward to seeing slughorn in the next movie. You can't hate him like you do umbridge, but you can't like him at all either.

Are you supposed to have strong feelings about his character either way? To me, book 6 was always about Harry / Snape / Dumbledore / Voldemort.
Hot Rod

I just find him really annoying, I don't know way. Maybe it's because I couldn't understand why Dumbledore held this guy in any kind of high regard.

Um, maybe you should go back and read the book again. Something about a certain memory that he possesses... you know

I've got my copy preordered at borders. I wasn't going to do the whole midnight premeire thing because I'm not interested in starting a book at 12:30 am, but Cathryn wants to go just to see all the people and experience the atmosphere.

as a fan of the books, I prefer to pretend that said people and atmosphere don't even exist.

Um agreed. All the other characters in Book 6 are fillers. That one is all about those 4 (and maybe Harry / Malfoy as well).

I probably won't be able to read the book for like two months.

So I went over my old copies of the books and it finally struck me as to why I really dont like these books. Harry, or anyone else for that matter, are not likeable characters at all. I spent most of the time wondering when these characters are gonna get killed off. I can sort of understand why these books are widely acclaimed and why the movies have been so sucesful, but IMHO everyone acts like a pompous prick to each other and then complains about it. No thank you good sir, i will have none of that.

To be fair, Harry's pompous prickishness is explained far better in the film than the book (Either that Or I just couldn't be arsed with reading the book properly, either way)

owning books you don't like...ok, I've got a few I regret.
Re-Reading over 2000 pages of said books just to see if you still don't like them....

So who has finished the book yet? I finished it at 1:00 last night, and I must say that it was well worth it. For every book that has let me down (ahem, The Dark Tower), this one made up for it.
Simply amazing.

I saw the movie last weekend and the left unimpressed. I took my 8 year old cousin and he was a little disappointed. I am sure the book is better, but after 4 movies of Harry not knowing what the hell is going on until the last second and the horrible threat of Voldermort at the end I am just getting tired of the same plot told in a different fashion. Again I am sure the book is better because there is more time for character development, but I am surprised 'Movie' Harry has not gone insane yet.
I went ahead and wiki'd the last 2 books and will watch the last two movies on DVD.

I read it fast too, which is not my typical harry potter MO.
Hadn't felt this excited ending a series since reading Dune: Chapterhouse.

I did the midnight release thing (actually, I decided it was too crowded, went to go eat, and came back an hour later when the line was much more tolerable). Finished the book in 19 hrs. Evidently I'm a very slow reader as most of my friends finished it in less than half the time. I liked it.

i did the midnight launch, read the last line first.
as i was exiting the shop some lass said to me "do you know who dies?
i said"no but i know
harry lives". i left quickly as over 100 people moaned all at the same time

i finished the book btw and i was shocked at the amount of deaths
for those not bothered
The major character Death list:
Hedwig
Mad Eye Moody
scringemour
Lupin
Tonks
Fred Weasely
alot of Death eaters
Servius Snape
Crabbe
Voldemort
there were some i couldn't recall off the top of my head although i do think the ending was a good one but i would have prefered a little bit more of the epilouge. It didn't seem long enough to me

Voldemort wasn't in the 3rd one. He also isn't promenant in the 6th, and absolutely doesn't wait until the last second in the 7th.
I liked book 7 quite a bit. I was surprised to learn teh deathly hallows are things, not a place. I also expected to hear more about the dursleys than we did.
Rowling said for a long time that we'd see someone do magic that had not yet done so in teh series. Was it
Lily Potter? I don't remember her doing any explicitly before, but that isn't that big of a surprise. Did I just miss it?

The book ended about 30 pages short.
That is to say, the epilogue felt tagged on last minute and was far (FAR) too short.
