The scene in Park Lane after suspicious vehicle reportsA second London car bomb is being inspected by officers, police sources have said.
The vehicle was found in an underground car park off Park Lane in the centre of the city following the discovery of the first bomb which failed to detonate nearby in the West End early on Friday.
The second car was in the vehicle pound used by the local council to store those towed away for illegal parking. But police refused to comment on reports that it had been towed there by parking officials who were unaware of its deadly contents.
The Met's Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke said the second car bomb was similar to the first found outside Tiger Tiger nightclub in Haymarket. It too was a Mercedes and contained a "considerable amount" of explosive material and nails, he said.
The second car was found in nearby Cockspur Street, a few hundred yards from the first.
Mr Clarke said the two vehicles were "clearly linked" and both were "potentially viable".
He told a press conference at Scotland Yard: "The vehicle was found to contain very similar materials to those that have been found in the first vehicle in Haymarket earlier (on Friday).
"There was a considerable amount of fuel and gas canisters, as in the first vehicle. There was also a substantial quantity of nails. This like the first device, was potentially viable and was made safe by explosives officers. The vehicles are clearly linked."
Mr Clarke said the second Mercedes, a blue 280E model, was parked in Cockspur Street, which runs between Haymarket and Trafalgar Square, and was issued with a parking ticket at about 2.30am.
He said: "The second vehicle in Cockspur street was subsequently taken to the pound in Hyde Park at about 3.30am." He added that it had been examined by Metropolitan Police explosives officers.

i dislike the fact that people would actually do this. i mean what could they possibly hope to achieve other than kill and maim innocent people.
