Marvel has a new Bullpen Bulletins (it's not called that, though) and they run a hilarious, out of context panel from a comic book each month. This month's is from a Daredevil comic. He's holding a soft, brown substance in his hand, sniffs it, and wonders if it is what he thinks it is.

I think it's because the people who actually read them and crap know that comics have gotten past that point for the msot part. The people who don't don't know that, and thus the fanboys get irritated.

In one of the Titan TPBs, the editor (Jim Salicrup, I believe) said that there was a rule that every character's action had to be clearly defined and explained, which is why there's a lot of panels where guys are like "Well I, TRAILBREAKER, will create a forcefield and deflect those oncoming missiles," or, "Oh no, I am being shot with a giant ice cannon! I am freezing up!"

I'm currently reading the Xmen comics in chronological order, which I got from... well... a *cough* "source," let's say, and so far have only gotten through the first 50... and let me tell you... there is some cheese in those hills! There's only so many times you can hear someone exclaim "Holly Hannah!" and wonder WTF were they tripping on back then?

Sometimes it was jarring, yeah. But go read New Avengers 26 and tell me what the last couple pages mean. I still have no clue, and I don't think I'm too much of an idiot. We have totally swung the opposite direction when it comes to clearly defined and explained action!

"I'll cream you for that"?
"Cheese and Crackers"?
Yep, those were the good old days.
Seriously, though... a lot of old comic books are so speech-bubble filled. They'd say things like, "What? I fell through a trapdoor!" etc. etc.
