Believe me, we don't like this BS anymore than you guys and we are doing everything we can do deal with this. As an added measure to help ward off this kind problem here and on other sites you use, I can HIGHLY RECOMMEND downloading and installing the AVG FREE Edition. It will scan your PC for viruses AND it keeps an active agent running when you are surfing the Web that should warn you and stop these kinds of attacks. You can download the program from Download.com at the link below:

http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Fre...4-10320142.html

If you got whacked by the virus. This program should also remove it from your PC.

Here are a few other FREE apps I can recommend:

Spy-Bot Search & Destroy - Another scanner / active agent only this one looks for and block 1000s of spy ware apps. There's some other tools in there too like registry scanning etc.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Crap Cleaner - What a name! biggrintf.gif Really, its a great tool for removing tracking cookies, hacks in your registry, start up apps, and a bunch of other useful cleanup tools. It will also free-up a shitload of space on your drive. Be careful tho - this app is powerful:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

Firewall - Zone Alarm is FREE, but take your pick. They are all mostly the same. As soon as you install one and look at the log you'll know why you should use one. Scary stuff! eektf.gif

http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1001..._731_000_en.exe

Fire Fox - Yea, notice how more people are saying it. I am a FireFox user and I had no problems with this - not that that is any excuse - just want to illustrate that it is a safer browser.

I can't promise any of these will work for all of your problems - be sure to read and follow all directions when using these apps. I take no responsibility for what happens if you use them. I personally have been using them with great results for years now and give them all a thumbsup1.gif
Father Time
I am using it for some time now, and I can vouch for its effectiveness.

Ofcourse, it doesn't solve the problem that there is a virus on this site, but, as Wheel-Jack said, this is an added measure, not a solution, and I have every confidence the staff here will solve the problem.

Ive been using AVG for about 2 years now, replaced the resource hogging norton with it. ^_^

AVG Free is brilliant, highly recommended!

Also, Windows Defender is free & worth a look too.

http://malwarewipe.com/ is good too. You need to pay though. (O RLY?)

I have all 3 and they're all good. Alot of people recommend http://www.mcafee.com/ too, but I haven't tried it.

Shreddy!
Adaware is good as well IMHO

Awesome - Thanks for the tips! If anyone else has any useful apps post them up. Do be careful where you download stuff from tho. Some of these anti-spy-apps can have spy apps in them. eektf.gif

NOD32. 30 day free trial. even if you have AVG, at least download the trial.

think of AVG as a .44 Magnum. it will Powerglideing hurt viruses.

Now, think of NOD32 as a nuclear missile.

and there you go.

AVG isn't perfect, far from it. download the NOD32 trial and you'll probably find some stuff AVG has missed.

XP64 recommendations (for the three of us or so with it :-P)

AVG was awesome till I switched to XP64.. I use avast! now and it's great also.. knocked out the virus, although I had to reboot b/c of the fact that it was buried in the system files but it found it and quarantined it before damage was done.

I used Zone Alarm also and it was good, but Ghostwall is what I'm using now.. spybot very rarely finds anything between avast! and Ghostwall. Ghostwall is non-intrustive and low resources, and I've not been hacked to my knowledge (nothing on my credit or bank acct.)

Just letting people know about their options.

also try "HijackThis " vrsn. 1.99.1

In depth tool for scanning your computer for Spyware.

HijackThis scans areas of your registry and hard drive and returns a log of items which it detects. As this tool is recommended for advanced users only, we recommend you run a scan and then post your log file on a support forum, where someone will be able to suggest which entries to remove.

here is the official site:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.php

If this doesnt work due toyour pc being infected, there is another link:

http://216.180.233.162/~merijn/

then go to downloads

warning: hijack this is very powerful and good for finding deep rooted spyware etc BUT u need to know what you are doing. i suggest either getting a nerd to use it for u or look/ask questions at the forums there.

Sound advice. Take it to heart fellow TFans. I battle irresponsible users and malware for a living. Along with CCleaner and Spy-Bot, the excellent Ad-Aware rounds out my flash drive bag o' tricks for fighting malware. While we use a network grade AV agent and firewall at work, I always recommend AVG Free to users who ask about AV for their home PCs. While I currently use the excellent and more comprehensive Avast! Free from Alwil at home, I have used AVG Free in the past and recommend it for it's ease of use and user friendly interface. Great thread PHP Pimp! thumbsup1.gif

For you XP Users, such as myself, here is a foolproof registry cleaner:

Lexun RegScrub XP

Cleans out 99% of unneeded registry files while NEVER deleting a file you might need. It also gives you the option to keep registry files you might want. Excellent program.

I use Avast 4.7, AdAware, NoAdware, ZoneAlarm Basic and Firefox 2.0 myself. NoAdware is a nice shareware, but if you know how to edit your own registry, it's technically free. optimuslaugh2.gif SpyBot S&D never worked right for me, kept selecting valid files and it usually missed something.

SpyBot has been updated quite recently. You need to uninstall the old version & reinstall it from scratch though, due to bugs in a previous update. Only takes a couple of minutes & it's worth doing if you use the program. thumbsup1.gif

WARNING: AVG Free 7.5 how now been replaced with version 8.0.

This new version is indeed a better virus checker but there are two problems:

- Do NOT say yes to the toolbar. They fail to mention it is just a glorified "Yahoo Search" toolbar, which includes the same features as the actual software that you are already downloading. Also, toolbars like Yahoo's only slow down your internet browser.

- Even without the search bar, using version 8.0 has been widely reported to SLOW DOWN your PC's performance due to the new upgraded software. If you dont have a nice, fast PC, I would strongly reccomend going to www.filehippo.com or www.download.com and using another free virus checker until Grisoft sort out AVG 8.0's infamous slowdown probs!

OR:

Just stick with AVG 7.5 for the time being. You will just have to tick "remind me in 60 days" to keep the annoying "security update" pop-up when you go online though. Here's hoping Grisoft will fix 8.0 so it becomes actually usable, eh readers?

Hope this helps!

I just switched to Vista (and so far no issues! smile11.gif) and found a better registry cleaner than the one I had:

RegScrubVistaXP

It's a similar interface to the RegScrubXP from Lexun, but it digs much deeper to find orphaned and invalid files. It's also more GUI oriented. It works, as the name suggests, with both Vista and XP. And like it's predecessor, it's virtually safe. So far, it hasn't deleted any valid files, although the option to exclude still exists.

Avast 4.7, NoAdWare5.0, ZoneAlarm Firewall and Lavasoft AdAware2007 work just great on Vista, BTW. Lavasoft has AdAware2008 in beta testing, although it's supposed to be released any time now in full form.
