actually, no one knows who it is yet. Well, none of my contacts know who it is. Just like with Identity Crisis, we probably won't know who it is until the first issue comes out. And just like in Identity Crisis the death toll will rise throughout the course of the story.

I'd hope so. Countdown is only a one-shot

Well it is a one shot like No Mans Land was or AoA Alpha...one book to start it off
Big Grim
Dec 26 2004, 12:05 PM
yeah, Countdown is another crossover event that just begins in that issue. It is called Countdown after all. And if you read books like Superman/Batman, then you have an idea what it's counting down too. In case you missed it, here's what I posted in the Identity Crisis thread:
QUOTE
more info from my contacts you guys, EVERYTHING that came up in Identity Crisis will be expanded upon in 2005. And I do mean EVERYTHING. The next big event, Countdown, begins in March. Well, technically we're in countdown right now. You see, all the big DC writers (Loeb, Goyer, Johns, Meltzer, Winnick, Rucka, etc) having been laying the seeds for the past year. And especially if you read Superman/Batman or Teen Titans, lotta clues in there. Even stuff that went down in JLA/Avengers and what's going on in JLA with the CSA will be involved. And more people are gonna die. It all begins in March with an 80-page issue, and Batman's holding a corpse on the cover. But we (my contacts and I) have no idea who it is.

I don't have a direct line, it's more like I know a guy who knows a guy. I've been friends with the manager at my comic shop for over 7 years. He goes to EVERY major comic convention and has mingled with some of the hottest writers and artists. So he gets on the inside scoop a lot, and shares this info with me. Oh, and apparently there are a lotta pornstars at comic cons too. He says Aria Giovanni's as dumb as hell

update at newsarama about Countdown and how DC's been setting all of this up for the past 2 years.

I wonder if this ties into the interview Didio & Quesada did in Wizard. Didio said the breakout character of '05 was going to be Blue Beetle--and I'm assuming he did it with a straight face.
(BTW: Batman looks like he's holding Nightwing)

Anyone object to a wee bit of analysis?
Okay, well, it's Batman holding the body, and looking pretty upset about it. There are, of course, numerous people whose deaths Batman would be pretty upset about.
The body itself is clearly male, because it has no breasts, and in comics, that's the one defining feature above all others of women.
Superman is also pretty damn upset about it. This leads me to think Nightwing, since Supes and Dick were quite close. The refutation is, Nightwing is a popular character so why kill him?
Wonder Woman is holding Supes back. This obviously aludes to the division that's come\is coming about between WW, Supes, and Bats. What else? Looking at it from another perspective, it almost looks as if WW is comforting Clark. What could that mean?
Also: Is there any particular significance to the heroes on the cover? Do all of them have a link to a specific character who could be the corpse?

Well...a tiny bit of speculation is to look at the head. The shadow has tatters of a cowl, not a plethora of hair like Nightwing has. So, maybe when one says 'breakout character', perhaps it's more in line with his death sparking this...I have no real speculation on who it is...I just don't think it's Nightwing.
Big Grim
Feb 8 2005, 04:09 PM
I am so sick of people guessing Nightwing for everything. People actually thought he was the killer in Identity Crisis

For the love of God, people. Nightwing is a DC icon, they're not gonna kill him off anytime soon.
Zombie Rodimus

Well, I did kinda acknowledge that.
Apparently, not even Jim Lee and Alex Ross know who it is, so speculation may just be pointless at this stage.

Wait, Nightwing
wasn't the killer in Identity Crisis? But he was wearing a trenchcoat and so was the killer!!1!
Yeah, I know that Nightwing's not gonna buy it, but it does look like him. That doesn't mean that it is. Seriously, though, it could be a mutated Comet the super-horse for all I care--he was a shape-changer, right? It still looks good.
PS: Dan Didio publicly acknowledged that the event that started all of this in motion was...
the death of Donna Troy. Hmmm...

I know, first Sue and now all this stuff with Beetle, Booster, and Maxwell Lord. You know, I never liked Max but I always thought there was a nice guy somewhere inside there. Guess I was wrong. By the way, we haven't seen the last of Blue Beetle.

Well, I read this, and it had completely the effect DC didn't want it to have on me.
You know what the problem with the DCU is? I don't care. I don't care about the characters. I don't care about the lame 90's reference coming back and messing things up. I don't care about 'things never being the same again'. I just can't bring myself to enjoy DC. Even Flash feels dry and wooden as hell, and Countdown only exacerbated this for me.
From now on, I'm a Marvel boy. Interesting characters and good storylines. Not just big explosions all over the place.
