The original dye-cast is better, but the best one I've seen to date is the 'hard to find pullback lion force Voltron!, small, cheap and combineable, not to forget extremely poseable! once you got past the annoying pullback engens and oddly placed wheels!

Even compared to the Matchbox and Trendmasters it was far better and had more playability!

Unfortunately I lost it in the late'80s and I've been searching for a replacement ever since! rumblecry.gif

I actually had the pull back and go one, as well as the big one the figures went into.  Of the 2, the PB&G one was superior, but I had to replace nearly all of them at least once due to busted plastic.  I have a yellow lion still from that set, but the rest are long gone.  rumblecry.gif  I wouldn't mind getting one of the original die cast ones if I could get one for $30 or $40, but if I have to spend big bucks, I'll take the Masterpiece one.  thumbsup1.gif

The Masterpiece version is a 100% cartoon accurate version, transforms perfectly, and if I'm not mistaken, it is also die cast, just like the original.  Which 80's version are you saying is better than that... the die cast one that got loose joints on the lion legs so quickly that they wouldn't even stand up in lion mode, or the plastic ones with the pull back and go motors, whose tails on the red and green lions would break off in the black lion so you couldn't combine Voltron at all, or are you talking about the riddiculously abnormal big plastic one that the figures fit into, with the huge cockpits on the lion's backs, and the solid, one piece lion legs that were completely unposeable, so they looked wierd in Voltron mode, and made the lions look like they were on tip toes in lion modes?  Or, perhaps you mean the little rubber one that could be taken apart into the five lions, but none of them transformed at all?  That one was really cool.  Much better than this Masterpiece...  rolleyestf.gif

I'm questioning the show accuracy of this "show accurate" version!

Why are the lions legs still visible?

Do the yellow lion's missile launchers come out of the head correctly or open like flaps on the original?

Do all the lions have clearly defind animation style neks?

With the 4 limb lions do they have well sculpted rockets at the neck's base for displaying the "lion head attack?

Do they come with detailed 'to scale' cockpits?

Can the black lion display it's "winged lion" mode?

WELL? slytf.gif

Come on bro what do you want? This thing looks sick!

If you hate it that much than just don't buy it. they are only making a couple thousand anyway so it leaves more for those who can appreciate how awsome this guy looks.

EHM... Someone made the claim that it is"show accurate" OBVIOUSLY IT IS NOT!!

Let's be thankfull it's only a limited run, only a 'basic effort went into this desighn, if 20th ann op was handled the same way it would have been dismissed on the spot!

For many years I've hoped for a 'better' voltron, only to be dissapointed at every turn,'Trendmasters' had the chance to make something speshal but ended up just trying to make a quick buck, no wonder the line was short lived!

All they have done for this voltron is to make it a little more poseable and trimmed the wasteline not to mention the bloated pricetag!

Get it if you want but don't expect value for money !  bumblebeetounge.gif

WHAT THE HELL IS UP WITH THE CHROME!!!! Its too damn old skool. I like how they originally had IT. I don't even feel like buying it anymore.

I think the toy has been for 2 weeks, I saw it as available on some site.

I've been wondering this for a while..why are they calling this a "Master piece" Voltron? I can't tell any difference between it and the original Voltron toy.

What's wrong with the world today!?!?!? The figure has been out for days now and nowbody has the decency to post good out of box pictures anywhere on the net.

Damn BBTS!!! I don't recieve my Voltron 11 days after I made my order. Thats twice as long as the usual shipping.

Not really a transformer of course but i keep looking at it, and I'm almost ready to throw down the money, but 150 for him is a bit much without knowing if he's any good.  So anyone have him willing to give me a review, or no where I an find some reviews?

I thought he was too expensive.

and this'll probably get moved to non-tf mecha.

I loved Voltron as a kid, so I really wanted to pick it up.  But alas, there's been too much TF goodness recently, so I don't have the cash.

If the Masterpiece Robotech figures are any indication of Toynami's products, I would expect a spectacular figure.  By the same token, I seem to recall there having been certain quality control issues with the Masterpiece Alpha.
Agent TMan
I haven't forgotten him.........I just may never own em. $150 is a lot. I have so many other things I want coming out soon. Like THS G1 Convoy, Alt Prime or if he's out by then BT Ginrai, Cloud Strife and his bike, C-Galvatron, BTA 2 and BTA 3 *BTA 4 if it's coming out. I can keep going for days.

If the person buying the MP Voltron ever reads this, there's no telling what you'll get.

Same here I have one on the way for my birthday in a couple weeks! Can't wait! Been dying to get my hands on it ever since I saw it coming out.

I had the chance to own the original mold diecast and all like 7yrs ago. He was right there in TRU for Freaking $29.99!!! Can you believe it?! I chose to get Optimal Optimus instead redface2tf.gif  The MP is better and I do want em. He would be so cool next to 20th Prime. Then I'd go out and buy one of those Talking Dukes and they'd have a 80's showcase on my shelf.

I really want this guy. Here is link to a review with pics,

http://toyboxst.inwards.com/phorum/read.php?1,137971,page=1

I think it is a good representation of the cartoon character. When I would draw Voltron as a kid, it would look more like this guy than the 80's blocky version.

Is it a Masterpiece? I don't know. But what else would this toy need to be considered a Masterpiece? Voltron (at least this one) is just a combiner made up of 5 robot lions. His primary weapon is that huge sword.

THANK YOU LOS!!!! This beats 1 word posts with a pic.

I couldnt find a review and any other pics from Toynami's site. Google only produced 2 images that wasn't on their site.

I've got one en-route to me.  Hopefully I can give everyone a decent idea (better yet, some pics) of what it's like.  For me, it's a throwback to the days of yore when watching Voltron scream across the screen was the only thing I cared about.  I don't care if it's shoddy; it's still Voltron!  smiletf.gif

And from what I understand, Toynami has outdone themselves on this one (as opposed to the lame Robotech stuff marred with QC problems).

No problemo.

Here is a thread from TFW2005 that has closer pics,
http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/showthread.p...16&page=1&pp=15

There is rumor that another 10,000 will be made after the inital 5,000 are sold. I am getting one now to open and another later to keep MISB (if I am happy with it). Maybe when the 2nd wave is released, the price will drop some.

The problem is it looks to thin is some spots.  Besides that it looks great..
HowieH
Just got this today.  Mine is number 197/15000...so Los, there will be a total of 15000 made.  The one thing that leaps out at you when you get it in it's white box (like the ones that came with the Alphas) is it's weight.  This thing is heavy!  Must weigh upwards near three or four pounds!

The signature Toynami book-styled keepsake is quite wide and comes with two trays.  Black lion now has a neck!  Voltron's face looks great.  The connections for Red and Green lions to join to Black lion are made of plastic and give the impression that they might break with too much wear-and-tear.

Blue and Yellow lions are neat, too.  They have an chrome engine beneath them.  Lots of heft in all five lions and lots of chrome.  Several ratchet joints and plenty of new joints that did not exist in the previous iteration.  QC is definitely a winner (FINALLY) in this one.  Looks like Toynami's been listening.

It would have been nice to see the extra weapons come with this set but for all it's worth, it's a beautiful set.  It's nice and lean, just like the television show.  I agree with everyone; I think the only other critique (thus far) is the wings are a touch thin.  But everything's nicely proportioned and it looks great next to your Go-Lion/Voltron/Trendmaster/bootleg.  I recommend looking at the multitude of pics of this new bad boy found elsewhere on the WWW to decide whether you like it or not.

All in all, I initially did not want it, but after seeing pictures, I was convinced.  Now that I have the final product in my hands, I am not regretful of my decision.  Again, is it a masterpiece?  Like Los stated, I don't know.  Many people have their own ideas of what constitutes a "masterpiece."  But for me, it's pretty darn neat.  Cheers!

Here's to hoping for a Voltron I release! thumbsup1.gif
Rapid Run
a Voltron I MP, I would certanly buy that.

The use of the word "Masterpeice" is getting out of hand.

Keep in mind that I have the Toynami Masterpeice Voltron and I love it.
Toynami actually redeemed there tarnished reputation with this one.
But a masterpeice, although very cool, it's not.

1) The lions heads don't shoot.
2) No shooting missles for the lions.
3) No swords or weapons for the lions.

When the original POPY Godaikin Golion came out it was around $50.00
it came with a ton of accessories all included.

Now some 20+ yrs. later half the diecast, 1/16 of the weapons and 3x the price. WTF!... but it has articulation.

I'm mean look at what other companies are doing to gouge consumers.
Yamato for example.  There 1/12 scale Scopedog.  There charging $40.00 for a pilot (Chirico Cuvie), $50.00 Parachute Sack, $50.00 for a missle launcher and another $50.00 for there upcoming Round Mover (jet backpack).  Thats over $200.00 in add-ons that should have came with there $120.00+ Scopedog in the first place.  What an absolute rip off!  thumbsdown.gif And I won't even start with there Macross add-ons.

What if Transfomers or G.I. Joe charged extra for a sword or an uzi?  Trust me it's not to far off.  And don't give me that "the cost to produce plastic has went way up or that inflation B.S."  For crying out loud people these toys are all made in China or Taiwan at pennies on the dollar.

15,000 Voltrons @ $150.00 = $2,250000.00 - production costs = TOO MUCH
Devil Mazinkaiser
Well - I got the original 'lead paint' Voltron back in the '80's for christmas and yeah, it looked real nice but the problem with it was articulation. Other than standing upright and looking regal, that's about all it could do.

With this version (that should be getting to my house on Jan. 30) it's all about show accuracy and articulation. So, the lions heads don't shoot off. Half the time they flew off on their own on the original version, and even caused one of those "domino effect" scenarios on my TF shelf. Definitely NOT cool.

To each his own, I guess. From what I have heard from several reviews it is a really nice piece.

Thanks, HowieH for the review and I just hope that the number I get is as low as yours!

Got my Voltron this afternoon. The UPS system said it was scheduled for delivery on Monday, but I checked the site and it was already out for delivery. So I had about an hour to mess around with it. One thing I noticed was that the chromed areas would chip off when moving those parts of the limbs. I don't mind it though, as long as they aren't noticable.

Anybody having problems with gettin the Black Lions legs inside that compartment? One leg won't even fit in and the the other can't go in all the way. I just leave the legs hanging out.

Thought about throwing in the PG Strike, but no, they weren't the same height.

Just placed an order with BBTS. Will post pics when I get him (and my 1/48 Roy Fokker!).

I do the same.  I can't seem to get them in all the way but then again I'm a bit wary of something breaking if I shoved too hard.  Still worried about the old Toynami fragility.

sorry about the crappy pics, cell phone cameras are not meant for detail pics

this was my birthday present from my wife, I mentioned it once and she hunted him down on bbts (They PWNED her on shipping upgrade and the friday delivery became monday grr.gif )

overall, I love this guy, the articualtion is nice and he feels really sturdy
besides the articulation he is leaner and slightly taller than the matchbox one I had as a kid, plus all apps are painted no stickers (the launching hands gimick is gone too icon_sad.gif )

note, he is not a playing with toy though, the five pieces wouldnt take the abuse of mp-01, just by design

as far as how much metel there is (toynami was extremely ambiguous about this.
all the lions bodies are made of metal, with the joints, heads and limbs being plastic.

the chrome parts are plastic, but reminicent of old school chrome toys, I imagine they could wear.

the paint apps and the packaging rock as well (the gigantic book looks great next to my valks' book/boxes

my biggest complaint is that the blazing sword is platic, a metal one would have been so stellar but problably to heavy for him to hold

overall, a great score, but I have the feeling that the extremely late release and toynamis other failures will overshadow this toy and you may be able to get him pretty cheap if you hunt for one (not mine)
