I could comment on the overall hideousness of this thing, but nostalgia is a weird thing. I've never seen a single episode of Voltron in my life, but I'd imagine it's impressive if I did.
Calling this guy a masterpiece is far fetched, so much time since the Voltron series and it still looks exactly like the originals.
So instead of calling it hideous, I'll call it 'lacking'.

Did you rip on 20th Prime for looking like the G1 cartoon also?

Note that I said I never watched the cartoon. I don't like the design on these guys. I didn't rip on the cartoon design, I ripped on the toy design. If 20th prime would look like his original toy, I'd rip on him as well.

I have to agree, there isnt too much that could be changed from the original. the biggest difference is the articulation and detail
fwiw he is heavier than anni prime and has equal articulation (even a waist swivel)
I will honestly say he is BETTER than the masterpiece valks they made but I liked robotech more than voltron growing up
and since he was FREE, its hard not to like hime

my point is that if you've never seen the show and aren't a fan, then you wouldn't be in a position to understand what exactly would make a "masterpiece" figure from the show, as in what's important for it to have / be like, what improvements over the original should be there, etc.

Could someone explain to me how this thing looks EXACTLY like the orginal to them? I am having a hard time seeing it. It is like saying the new MP Brave ExKaiser look exactly like the original, IMO. This black lion, which is the body and head, has been completely revised! Plus, I know I could not pose my 80s Voltron like this new one.
The whole Masterpeice debate I understand. But to say that the new version is EXACTLY the same as the 80s toy, does not make sense to me.

I said that I do not share the nostalgia for the Voltron series and do not like the design. To me, this guy does not look a whole lot different to the original toys, making me not like them.
Nostaligia is a strange thing, it keeps me buying toys kids nowadays would also find hideous. And I'm not saying you or other people do not have the right to not enjoy something if I wouldn't buy it or like it. I like Backstop, you have the full right to hate his guts without seeing it first hand or seeing him on the show.

Hey smithsquared -
I was in the same position as you with getting this as a b-day present.

I got mine a week ago friday, but I have one question:
Do you have problems with the arm pegs wanting to come out? Mine seem to work their way out of the black lion after a few turns of the arms. Maybe a "locking" feature on the connectors would help....

The lions are great by themselves. Pretty decent articulation for 5 blocky lion robots. Some of the chrome legs have real tight joints, so be careful extending them for the first time.
The robot mode is beautiful (if you are a Voltron Fan!). I used to have this toy as a kid, so this brings back alot of memories. The head is very poseable and if you have a one of those 3 prong acrlyic stands, you could probably do a flying superman pose. Since he is a combiner, the articulation is limited. The arms have good articulation because both halves of the red and green lions can rotate around the L-joint. The legs are very restricted, but pose better than the orginals. With slight articulation here-and-there, this figure clearly has a more dynamic presence than the orginal toy. Plus it looks very close to the cartoon character.
QC issues
- small area of sloppy paint application on the black lion's face, but very minimal so OK
- left wing on black lion is very loose at the base
- noticeable chip on the black lion's right inside bicep (at least it is painted over)
- cannot attach the blue lion on the right leg, works only if I put her on as the left leg
- parts were chromed then snapped off the tree, leaving un-chromed notches
Not everyone may notice or care what I see, but given Toynami's QC history with Robotech MPC line, I thought it would be important to mention it anyway.
Now for the big question, is it worth $150? To me, I would have liked to see this figure at around $80 dollars in cheaper packaging. While the elaborate packaging is nice, $150 is a lot for the average collector. As a display piece he is not as fun as MP Convoy or probably the new MP Brave figure. Now as a die-hard Voltron fan, the price is high but doable. For a retooled 80s toy that I loved very dearly, it was not hard for me to come up with the money (after all I did spent $145 on reissue Predaing!).
Is it a Masterpiece Voltron? Sure, why not? Until we get a better Voltron, this is as MP as it gets...
Took him apart today and found that each of the black lion's lower legs have a scratch on them, removing the chrome. Probably happened when I was twisting the yellow and blue lion legs for poses....so be careful!

its a common Friction scrape Los. Can't be helped with how tight the construction is.
I don't have one myself (very strong YET here) but thats what I think you've got going. It doesn't even have too be that hard to wear and tear to do that.

In 1984, Voltron: Defender of the Universe burst onto American television screens and quickly became the #1 children’s program in the United States.
I thinik this is interesting...i liked voltron as a kid, however I do not remember it being more popular then Transformers or even GI Joe in 84....as for this MP version of him....I wanted one, however now he seems to be sold out everywhere i shop.
Does anyone have the 1999-2000 Voltron the next dimension toys? I have the mini one and the one the same size as this MP. I had the original one that could fit the Gi Joe sized figures in them but the leg joints on the black lion fell off lol.

God, I remember Voltron being the king. I think it may have predated TFs by just a touch. It was either Voltron or He-Man as the standard of boy television at the time. Then came TFs and Thundercats.
Yeah, I still have the old plastic Voltron 3D (Stealth Voltron) around somewhere. I picked it up a few years back because I really liked the futuristic design but I still think the toy was lackluster (it's entirely plastic). Neat in design but poor in execution. Looks great standing next to Gokin Go-Lion/Voltron, though.
I later bought that gigantic Stealth Voltron because it was on sale but the joints were way too floppy. The saving grace was that you could stick figures in it so when the GI Joes had it's very original initial revival (that wacky TRU limited edition three pack), in went the figures. It also had dropping bombs (these tiny triangle caltrop-like things). I fail to remember what I did with the toy.
I owned a Voltrex for a while too, but that was a worthless piece of junk so I ended up dismantling it.

Hey tman, all I could find was the following link (you can catch a glimpse of Stealthy on the front of the box). I have the actual toy but it's somewhere within the pits of box hell so there is no way I can pull it out for a photo shoot. Sorry.

got my Masterpiece Voltron, and I love it. Word to the wise, make sure you push the arm pegs for Red and Green Lion in all the way. If you don't here them click, then the arms will fall off anytime you touch them. For some reason Blue Lion wouldn't click into place, but after fiddling around I got it in and it's actually holding more securely than Yellow Lion. Anyone, got it together and everything is holding into place perfectly, and it stands ok on it's own but it's best to have it's back leaning against something. This thing is so sweet
I put him away for a couple of weeks, but recently busted him out to show a friend who owned the 80s version. He posed the lions around like kittens playing and immediately noticed how well the black lion was retooled. When I assembled Voltron for him, he crapped his pants.

Just recieved mine today. I use to dream about a voltron robot when I was a little kid but never got one. $150 is a steal as I would have payed more. I took this at 8 Megapixels but had to downgrade the resolution 70% in order to reach the attach limit.

To dredge up an old topic, how are you MP Voltron's holding up after a year? I'm ready to pull the trigger at $99 if I lose an auction for MP-02.
