Yeah, the original G1 toy was uber-crappy, in a certain sense, but so were the rest of the toys from that era. Alot of the new Energon G1 homages are far superior to thier G1 counterparts, but still, G1 was what it was. Looking back, yeah, it would have been nice to get the Energon type toys back then, but that's like looking at the 2005 Mustang and saying "THAT'S what they should have looked like in the Eighties!" As with most items of nostalgia, we remember them as being cooler than they actually are, especially by comparison to what they have developed into over the last 20 years. Apples and oranges, to use a cliche. I like Energon Megatron/Galvatron, but as an Energon figure. G1 Galvy has that "G1 Quirk" appeal, that can't really be replaced. The funkiness of those old molds is what endears them to me, if they were "fixed", it just wouldn't be the same.
Okay, I'm stepping off my soapbox now.

I remember always thinking that if Galvatron had looked like his box art in the show, he would have been totally awesome. (For that matter, it would have been nice if the toy looked like the box art...) I never liked the blurple Galvatron look -- it was too discontiguous from Megatron.
That being said, I loved my Galvy. Sure, he was a bit too large and a bit too blocky, but he was still a great G1 figure. (Hey, he could move his legs at the waist and the knee, and it wasn't b/c he needed to do that in his transformation! For G1, that's pretty astounding.) He had a really unique look that I dug a lot. He and Cyclonus and Scourge were some of my favorite TFs ever. Man I wish I still had them...
To Me, E Megs captures more of the show Galvy than the toy Galvy. But even so, he's too "square." One aspect of toon Galvy that I liked is how he looked like a bodybuilder in a robot suit. E Megs is too stiff-looking IMO, especially the arms. Sure, a flying Galvy makes a nice "what if", but then you wouldn't have had those cool shots of Galvatron inside Cyclonus' cockpit.
