No, I haven't really considered openly pirating a movie and then posting about it on an Internet message board which pretty clearly doesn't want to be involved in that sort of thing, why do you ask?

I was just curious cuz I haven't seen the movie or any of the other movies before it, and it just seems like there was alot of hype.

Yes, Masamune Shirow is also the Ghost in the Shell guy.
Just got back from the movie - it's pretty cool. There were a lot of really fun battles and neat robot fighting scenes. The story / dialogue is about as corny as it gets, and it does get pretty word heavy from time to time. But the animation is cool, and the mech design is awesome. I did find myself distracted by the rendering from time to time, but my eyes tend to be drawn to unnatural movement.
I dunno, it was a fun movie to see, but we both agreed afterwards that it would have been better on DVD so we could have spent the movie making snarky remarks without bothering anyone.
Oh, and I sincerely hope the soundtrack was added for the dub release; it was distractingly awful.
Still, Deunan is teh h0tt.

I just watched the new Appleseed movie last night. Pretty good, but the something about the human characters bothered me. Did they use cell shading for that movie? Cell shading is cool for mecha and what not, but humans... it just looks weird. Particularly when the backgrounds looked so lush and realistic.
Any thoughts?

Yes the humans were CGI with a cell shader. I have yet to see the movie, but I remember many complaints about the CGI when it first came out.

The movie itself wasn't too bad. Briarios and the mobile platforms were great. But Deunan Knute looked too video game-ish. (although the liquid leather mini-skirt looked good

)

about Ghost in the Shell, there are the old ones (7 stories, compiled in 2 TPBs) (on which the later anime movie was based) and then there is a new series: Man Machine interface, which I believe is also alreay available in english

Alright, just finished watching this movie, after buying it last night. I thought it was pretty good, myself. The characters move very fluidly for CG (usually, motion capture tends to look a bit stilted and awkward when translated to the animated characters, but the animators did a good job of making the characters look more lively here), and the animation overall was wonderful. Story was interesting, too, so it wasn't all just eye candy.
Although one thing that bothers me. A major portion of all the reviews for this movie talk about it having a deep and non-sensical plot, that is very difficult to understand and yadda-yadda. What movie were these guys reviewing? Because it sure wasn't Appleseed. There was some philosophizing that may have been a bit difficult to follow, but the plot itself is very straight forward.

AS is based on Shirow's old manga series, it was translated over a decade ago by Dark Horse Comics. You can find trades for them online, usually at reasonable prices b/c the series isn't popular in comparison to GITS.
IMO don't copy or download anything once it's licensed. But you have to live with your actions whatever they may or may not be.

I got Appleseed when it came out on disc and I'm in love with this film. CGI is gorgous, the cell render stuff gets annoying at times because its so flat compared to the world.
The program they used is actually available to the public, but pricy. Its Lightwave by Newtek and I'm currently running between Version 7 (studio) and v8.3 at home. Very extensive and as you've seen by whats in the film the things it can do.
I'm far from Braorios and a mobile fortress, but Its something to look forward to.
